Tamil Nadu blocks Zonecar app, seizes 4 cars, shuts office
CHENNAI: Following complaints from licensed taxi operators, the state transport department has suspended operations of the Zonecar mobile application, which allowed car owners and drivers to operate their private vehicles as rentals. The Meenambakkam Regional Transport Office (RTO) seized four cars and closed down the Zonecar office located in Pazhavanthangal. The RTO and vehicle inspectors also imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 for each car for violation of registration rules, as per which own-use cars have to be converted to commercial vehicles to be used as taxis. Official sources from the transport department stated, 'There are ongoing legal proceedings regarding the operation of private two-wheelers as bike taxis. As a temporary measure, bike taxis with whiteboard registration are being allowed until the government announces a clear policy decision. However, under the Motor Vehicles Act, private cars can only be used as taxis if they are converted into commercial vehicles.' When asked about other apps that also enable private car owners to rent out their vehicles, officials said action would be taken against those platforms as well. Providing a platform for operating own-use vehicles for commercial purposes is illegal and will attract punitive punishment, added the official. TNIE was not able to download the Zonecar app from the application store for Android as on Thursday. To address the shortage of call taxis, the transport department amended the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules in November 2023, permitting privately-owned vehicles to be converted into transport vehicles, thereby allowing their use for commercial purposes. Last week, a group of call taxi operators staged a protest at Pallavaram, alleging that private vehicles with white number plates were being used as cabs at major transport hubs including the Chennai airport, Tambaram Railway Station, Kilambakkam KCBT and others. During a recent inspection on GST Road in Pallavaram a few days ago, authorities found four white-board vehicles transporting passengers. The passengers were then deboarded, and the vehicles were seized. Show cause notices were issued to the vehicle owners, and penalties were imposed accordingly, an official said.

RTO cracks down on illegal self-driving rentals, detains cars
Chennai: Regional Transport Office (RTO), Meenambakkam, on Thursday initiated action against the illegal rental of private vehicles to be used as self-driving cars. This followed a protest by licensed taxi operators earlier this week that drew attention to widespread violations in the city. Acting on instructions from joint transport commissioner (south zone) Pon Senthilnathan, RTO and enforcement officials conducted an inspection at Pallavaram police station, where the cars seized during the protest were examined. Several of them were found to be operating in violation of permit norms and were formally detained for running without valid commercial permits, a contravention of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. In addition, a separate notice was served to Zone Cars, the rental agency in Pallavaram, for functioning as an unauthorised canvasser and facilitating such illegal rentals, an offence punishable under Section 193 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Zone Cars, which has expanded operations to Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy, markets itself as a platform for private car owners to earn between 15,000 and 55,000 a month by renting out their idle vehicles. The firm advertises rentals at 105/hour and long trips for 1,500/day with unlimited kilometres, allowing bookings to be extended for up to six months. "Operation of private vehicles for commercial purposes without proper permits is illegal. Strict action will be taken against violators," the RTO said on Thursday.

Over 10k vehicles across state have defaulted on traffic challans: STA
1 2 Cuttack: The state transport authority (STA) has identified over 10,000 vehicles throughout Odisha which have defaulted on traffic challans. These vehicles each have five or more pending challans and are now under the radar of transport officials for strict penal action. On Thursday, STA issued 200 notices, warning the vehicle owners to clear their dues within 15 days. If they fail to comply, STA will initiate cancellation proceedings under Sections 53 and 55 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which empower the authority to suspend or cancel the registration of vehicles which are found to be habitual violators. "The 10,000 vehicles include commercial trucks and buses, along with private four-wheelers," Lalmohan Sethi, STA's additional commissioner, said. Sethi further said that the action is being taken in phases. "On Thursday, we served notices to 200 vehicle owners. This will continue and subsequently, all identified vehicles will be impounded if dues are not cleared within the notice period," he added. "The offenders are advised to immediately check their challan status on the STA portal or the Parivahan Sewa website and make payments," Sethi said. Most of the challans relate to violations such as vehicle fitness, speeding, defying traffic signals, overloading, not wearing seatbelts, illegal parking and others. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Photos Captured the Exact Wrong Moment Read More Undo Officials said that digital monitoring through the automated number plate recognition system and various CCTVs installed across the state help monitor traffic violations. The Vahan portal has also made it easier to detect and track the repeat offenders. The STA has also mobilized enforcement teams to prepare for physical verification and possible seizure of vehicles once the 15-day deadline lapses. The move is part of the state's broader mission to enforce traffic discipline and enhance road safety across Odisha.
