Three-car garage: three top Hondas for £35,000
With a smooth hybrid powertrain and a classy cabin, we like the latest Honda Civic here at Auto Express - although at £35,000 it's on the expensive side for a family hatchback. If you're indoctrinated into the Honda brand, then there's good news because you can get the family-friendly CR-V SUV, the surprisingly spacious Jazz supermini and the hybrid HR-V all for the same price as that new Civic.
The original HR-V was a bit of a wacky thing, being offered in a three-door bodystyle. But the second-generation model that arrived in 2013 was much more contemporary with a design that aped the Civic of the time. This one we've found comes with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a manual 'box that has a typically lovely Honda gearshift. This mid-range SE model also has an uprated hi-fi, dual-zone climate control, power-fold mirrors, all-round parking sensors and some extra driver-assistance systems. Used Honda HR-V deals
There's a lot to like about the current Honda Jazz - although given its high new list price, used alternatives like this EX hybrid model we've found make more sense. This example is only five years old and has covered 70,000 miles, but we wouldn't worry, because the Jazz scores highly for reliability in our Driver Power survey. It might not be the most fun supermini to drive, but with light steering and great all-round visibility the Jazz is super-easy when getting around town – and we can't forget those wonderfully innovative folding 'magic' rear seats that boost the car's practicality so much.

If you're after a well built, classy and refined family SUV, then the CR-V is a great choice. The fourth-generation model we've found here features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an automatic gearbox. It won't set your pulse racing with its 12.3-second 0-62mph time, but it's decently economical with a 37.7mpg combined figure. Like the other Hondas we've featured here, the CR-V should prove to be reliable, and being a mid-size SUV there's plenty of space inside – including a rather impressive 589-litre boot.

I bought a V6 Jaguar for £400 and doubled my money
It turns out that it's still possible to buy a functioning car with an MOT certificate for less than £500. I may have bought it from a friend's parents' neighbour, but this ULEZ-compliant Jaguar X-Type cost me just £400, complete with six months on the MOT (with only tired suspension parts as advisories) and just 53,000 miles. From the outside, you can tell it has lived in London's busy suburbs its whole life, but inside it looks almost new, despite the dated grey leather matching the walnut veneer like an original Mercedes-Benz A-Class and a moose test. The 2.1-litre petrol V6 is silky smooth (although shockingly averse to making progress), while the suspension is as pliant as almost anything else these days but equally demonstrates how far body control has come in the past 20 years. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the running costs. The annual road tax is £415 and the fuel consumption is diabolical. We're talking 16mpg in town and 24mpg on a run. The anachronistic five-speed automatic gearbox working with a complete absence of torque is to blame for this: if you set the cruise control at 70mph, the car will need to kick down to fourth at the slightest incline. Overall, my new Jag is far from perfect, but you can't argue with £400. Log two: Jag faces early exit – but not for why you'd expect After just a few months, it's already time to move the X-Type on: it turns out that someone who commutes by train does not need two cars. I'm not getting rid of the X-Type because it's rubbish. Well, it is, but in the same way your grandad is rubbish at athletics: time may not have been kind to his sporting credentials, but you still love him. And that analogy works because your grandad probably drives, or at least drove, an X-Type, and when he bought it 20 years ago it was somewhat more competitive than it is now. I do love the car, but unlike my grandparents I struggle to find time for it. Driving it is surprisingly pleasurable – it offers a relaxed undertone that is missing from almost everything these days – but when I do want or need to use one of my cars, it's my Alpina D3 that I turn to every time.

Fiat's next SUV is giving big Multipla vibes
Fiat's forthcoming Dacia Bigster rival could channel the spirit of the cult-classic Multipla MPV when it arrives in 2027. The new SUV is one of two C-segment models that the Italian brand is set to launch in the next two years, alongside a rakish, raised hatchback. They were previewed by Panda-inspired SUV and Fastback concepts unveiled early last year. Those models will be a maximum of 4.5 metres long and sit on the same cost-conscious Stellantis Smart Car platform as the smaller Grande Panda, enabling them to be offered with electric and hybrid powertrains. While the new SUV will sit broadly as part of the Panda design family and distinct from the range inspired by the classic 500, Fiat bosses have hinted it won't necessarily feature that name. Asked about the risks of Fiat expanding beyond its core city car market into the C-segment, Fiat Europe boss Gaetano Thorel said: 'It will be a challenge, because [it seems] we don't have the same legacy with family movers as we do with [the] 500 and Panda, but in reality we have, because when you think about the Multipla, then Fiat has a story on that. 'But thanks to Stellantis, we have a possibility to offer our customers and dealers a full passengercar line-up from 2.5 metres to 4.4 metres. That is the Fiat territory.' The Multipla arrived in 1998 as a 4m-long compact MPV with two rows of three seats and a host of space-saving features. The styling was divisive and the model was not a commercial success, but it won praise for its design, with Autocar's 2000 road test calling it 'the most innovative and exciting car in its class'. The new model will have more of a traditional SUV appearance but could echo the Multipla in terms of maximising space in a small footprint. The Citroën C3 Aircross, which uses the same Smart Car platform as the Grande Panda, seats seven.
