Cherokee Nation General Election sees local incumbents re-elected to Council
The incumbents re-elected include Candessa Tehee of District 2, Joshua Sam of District 7, Melvina Shotpouch of District 10, Kendra McGeady of District 11, Danny Callison of District 15, and at-large Councilor Johnny Jack Kidwell. Newcomer Ashley Grant was also elected to District 5.
The Cherokee Nation Election Commission is set to meet on Monday to certify the results of the 2025 General Election, which unofficially show 7,714 votes.
Newly elected and re-elected Tribal Councilors will be sworn in on August 14.
McGeady won the District 11 race with 614 votes, or more than 58%.

McGeady was appointed to the Tribal Council almost a year ago.
'Representing District 11 is a special responsibility,' said McGeady. 'Northeast Oklahoma holds a special place in the hearts of the Cherokee Nation. As our Nation expands services to Cherokees throughout District 11, I will continue to work to ensure our communities have access to transportation, education funding, and better access to quality health care, close to home.
Shotpouch received 376 votes for the District 10 race, more than 70%.
'I am so grateful to have been re-elected to serve for another term on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council,' said Shotpouch. 'Thank you to everyone who supported and believed in me throughout this journey.'

In Districts 4 and 9 races, no candidate received the required 50% plus one vote, so voters in those districts will select among the top candidates from the General Election results for a runoff to be held July 26.

The new website did not explicitly state whether he was running, but it did include his previous campaign slogan, 'Walk as Free People.' Mastriano introduced or co-sponsored various legislation in the 2025 State Senate session, including the 'Save Women's Sports Act,' a vaccine exemption for members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, and the establishment of a 'Green Alert System' to notify the public of missing veterans. Ian Liddell-Grainger has spoken of the time he was summoned to meet President Vladimir Putin, writes Phil Hill. And he described the Russian leader as 'charming and with flawless English' during their meeting seven years ago. That was before Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, which has reportedly resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Mr Liddell-Grainger, who was MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset until last year's General Election, was chairing a public meeting in St Petersburg at the time. As president of the International Parliamentary Union, a trade union of MPs across most of the world, he was invited to 'come and meet someone'. 'That someone was Putin,' he said. ' We had 15 or 20 minutes. He was charming with flawless English. 'He was interested to know what the feeling was about Boris Johnson, who was about to become Foreign Secretary. 'I was slightly more discreet than I normally am and said Boris was an intelligent man. 'We talked about Europe, Russia and Britain. 'At the time, Putin was very much in vogue in Europe because of its gas and oil. It was a very different time before he did Georgia and all those other things. 'He was very charming and patient, an interesting guy. 'He's a good politician and has been around a long time. He's a narcissist who's very smart and knows how to keep the Russian people onside.' Mr Liddell-Grainger added that Presidents Trump and Putin hold the European Union and British leaders 'in contempt' and that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy 'is going to be told what's going to happen - otherwise the war will go on'.

'What a fool I was to vote Labour' - Letter to York Press IT was very generous of you to give Luke Charters, the hapless Labour MP for York Outer, a full page (August 14) to tell us about how well he, and Labour, are doing. I have rarely read such rubbish. This Labour Government has been a complete and utter disaster. From complicity in genocide in Gaza to the outrageous proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation; from Rachel Reeves' wrecking ball of the budget, which has destroyed businesses up and down to the country, to the cruel cuts in winter fuel payments for pensioners, the attack on farmers and botched welfare reforms; from the £30bn bill for the 'sale' of Chagos Islands to unfettered immigration and eight million people on benefits, this shambolic Government has – within a year – betrayed the entire country. Quite an achievement. And before Mr Charters accuses me of political point-scoring, I voted Labour at the last election. Sick of the exhausted and rudderless Tories, horrified by Nigel Farage and Reform and unimpressed by the Liberal Democrat's wishy-washy views on gender and the economy, I had hoped that Keir Starmer's promised brand of enlightened socialism combined with compassionate conservatism would restore the UK's pride and prosperity. What a fool I was. Clearly Mr Charters is enjoying his time as Keir Starmer's lapdog. But unless he follows the lead of his fellow York MP Rachael Maskell, who is fearless in devotion to her principles and refuses to toe her party's discredited line, his time as an MP will be brutally cut short at the next General Election. 'Refuse bins' call CONGRATULATIONS to the residents of St John's Street and the Groves for standing up to the council's attempt to impose huge and hideous wheelie bins on their narrow streets, even when the household consists only of one or two people. The council wants us to believe that we have no option but to accept these but we do: we can simply say no. Not only do the bins create unacceptably squalid conditions visually but the policy contradicts the longstanding CYC attempts to discourage unnecessary amounts of waste disposal. I suggest a campaign slogan of: 'Refuse bins!'.
