Ancient idols found during restoration work at Hindu shrine in J&K's Anantnag

Ancient Hindu idols have been recovered during excavation work for a renovation project at a Hindu religious site in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials with the ancient idols discovered during excavation at a shrine in Anantnag district of J&K on Saturday, August 2.(PTI)
These idols and 'shivlings' could date back over 2,000 years, since the site where these have been found — Karkoot Nag (or Karkut Nag) in the Salia area of Aishmuqam town — is commonly associated by the Kashmiri Pandits with the Karkoota dynasty, which is said to have ruled Kashmir from 625 to 855 CE/BC. It is about 16 km from the district headquarters.
A local news channel said 15 ancient idols, including 11 Shivlings, were discovered at the site, which has historical religious remains.
A damaged sculpture depicting many deities — part of the discoveries — is believed to be part of an ancient temple pillar, which once stood at the place, a local daily reported.
The UT's public works department was undertaking restoration work for a spring there, as part of a broader project of the UT government, when labourers found these items during excavation, PTI reported.
Officials from the department of archives, archaeology and museums then visited the site. The idols will be sent to Srinagar for material and dating tests to determine their age and origin, officials told the news agency.
Research scholars will also be engaged in the study after the idols are shifted to Shri Pratap Singh Museum in Srinagar.
A local, unnamed Kashmiri Pandit was quoted by PTI as saying, 'There is a probability that a temple might have been there or someone might have kept them there for preservation.'
Local community leaders present there reportedly called for a need to construct a temple 'to restore the glory of the shrine'.

Cuban animal lovers struggle to feed stray cats, dogs as economic crisis bites

Agency: PTI Havana, Aug 7 (AP) Every afternoon, 81-year-old Nélida Pérez begins her familiar walk down the cobblestone streets of Old Havana, a procession of hungry cats trailing close behind her. For years, Pérez has taken it upon herself to feed some of the street cats that roam this part of town, which is also one of the most popular tourist spots in the Cuban capital. She once relied on her own food or restaurant donations, but as the island's economic situation worsened and tourism declined, it has become increasingly difficult to provide for them. 'I have never in my life asked anyone for a plate of food to feed my cats," Pérez told The Associated Press. 'Now I see myself in difficulties because there is no tourism and there is an economic crisis." Since 2020, Cuba has faced a worsening economic crisis, driven by COVID-19 shutdowns, stricter US sanctions, and an internal monetary reform that triggered inflation. Although the government provides vaccines, sterilisation and some free clinics, it does not have the means to provide shelter and food for street cats and dogs. While official data is unavailable, activists say that many pet lovers have turned their homes — even small apartments — into shelters, but they are struggling to keep up with the demand and provide adequate care. 'The streets will kill them," said Bárbara Iglesias, a 51-year-old pharmacist who adopted five dogs and has rescued and found homes for a dozen others. Iglesias explained that the hardest part is getting food. A 20-kilo (44-pound) bag of dog food, which lasts one dog for about 45 days, costs around $80 — a sum that is out of reach for most. This forces people to feed animals with pig organ meat (offal), chicken parts or mince meat — which are also not easy to obtain. On top of that, annual vaccines cost about USD 20 and a vet visit is another USD 10, all while the average monthly salary on the island is only about USD 12. Experts say that the abandonment of animals in Cuba is a result of several factors, including rising food and medicine prices, the migration of hundreds of thousands of Cubans in the last five years, and a high mortality rate among older adults. 'People are more focused on their problems, which are numerous: Cubans don't have water, they don't have electricity, and getting food is becoming increasingly difficult," said Annelie González, one of the leaders of the Aldameros Project, a cat colony located in a park in Havana's historic centre. 'Having an animal in your care involves feeding and caring," said González, 36, who works as a restaurant manager and spends much of her income on the cats. She and a small group of volunteers began feeding 15 cats in Aldameros Park at the beginning of the pandemic. Today, they care for more than 150. Over the years, through their own efforts and some donations, they were able to install water pumps, pens for special cases, and cages for the kittens. González points to a number that she said reveals the shocking scale of the problem: at the start of the decade, roughly three abandoned cats appeared in the park each week. This year, that figure has soared to 15 per day. Back in Old Havana, Pérez recounts with sadness how she has seen people mistreat, beat and even kill stray cats. 'As long as I'm alive and healthy, and people help me," she vowed, 'I'll always find them something to eat." Happy Raksha Bandhan 2025: 50 Rakhi wishes, WhatsApp messages, GIFs & images to celebrate your sibling bond

The auspicious Hindu festival celebrating the brother-sister bond is just around the corner. This year, it will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9. The name Raksha Bandhan signifies 'the bond of protection.' On this day, a sister ties a rakhi around her brother's wrist, praying for his happiness and well-being, while the brother promises to protect her throughout life. According to Drik Panchang, it begins on August 08 at 02:12 p.m. and concludes on August 09 at 01:24 p.m. 'The best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna, which is late afternoon according to the Hindu division of the day. If Aparahna time is not available, then Pradosh time is also suitable to perform rituals related to Raksha Bandhan," Drik Panchang believes. Happy Raksha Bandhan to the best sibling in the world! Our bond is unbreakable—today and always. Happy Rakhi! You're not just my sibling, you're my forever friend. Thank you for always being there. Happy Rakhi! A thread of love, a knot of protection. That's our bond. No matter the distance, you're always close to my heart. Here's to all the memories we've made together. Happy Raksha Bandhan! Your presence makes my life brighter. Happy Rakhi, bro/sis! May this Rakhi bring you love, laughter, and endless joy. Thank you for being my protector, my prankster, and my partner in crime. We may fight, but we always find our way back—because we're family. Raksha Bandhan reminds me how lucky I am to have you. The bond we share is more precious than gold. Happy Rakhi! You've been my strength in every phase of life. Grateful for you. Rakhi is a promise to love, protect, and never let go. You're my safe place, my secret keeper, and my hero. Every Rakhi I tie reminds me of your love through the years. I miss those childhood days we celebrated Rakhi with sweets and smiles. Even when life gets busy, your memories stay with me. You're the smile behind my strength. Happy Raksha Bandhan! You've always had my back, Bhai. Happy Raksha Bandhan! Thanks for being my mentor, protector, and biggest fan. You annoy me, but I still love you to bits. Rakhi is special because of you. May you keep growing, smiling, and making us proud. You are the reason I feel safe in this world. Distance doesn't change the love between us. You're more than just a brother—you're a blessing. Happy Raksha Bandhan, my dearest brother! With love from your favourite sister. May our bond be blessed by God forever. Tying this rakhi with love and prayers. May you walk the path of righteousness and joy. Wishing you prosperity and happiness this Raksha Bandhan. May the divine bond of Rakhi protect us both always. A sacred thread that ties us in soul and spirit. May you be blessed with strength, wisdom, and success. Let this Rakhi bring peace and harmony into our lives. I pray for your health, wealth, and well-being. Raksha Bandhan: A celebration of divine siblinghood. Raksha Bandhan 2025

Varalakshmi Vratam 2025 Puja Vidhi: Varalakshmi Vratam is a sacred and widely celebrated Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, health, and prosperity. It is especially observed by married women who perform rituals and fasts to seek the blessings of Goddess Varalakshmi, a powerful and benevolent form of Lakshmi. The vratam is believed to ensure the well-being, happiness, and longevity of their family members. This year, the auspicious occasion will be celebrated on Friday, August 8. This year, Varalakshmi Vratam falls on Friday, August 8, 2025. It is observed on the Friday before the full moon (Purnima) in the month of Shravana/Sawan, which usually falls between July and August. Puja Muhurat Timings Simha Lagna Puja Muhurat: 06:58 AM to 09:06 AM (Duration – 2 Hours 8 Minutes) Vrishchika Lagna Puja Muhurat: 01:24 PM to 03:38 PM (Duration – 2 Hours 14 Minutes) Kumbha Lagna Puja Muhurat: 07:33 PM to 09:10 PM (Duration – 1 Hour 37 Minutes) Vrishabha Lagna Puja Muhurat: 12:28 AM to 02:28 AM, August 9 (Duration – 2 Hours) The Meaning and Importance of Varalakshmi Vratam The word Varalakshmi combines two Sanskrit terms: 'Vara," meaning boon or blessing, and 'Lakshmi," referring to the goddess of prosperity. The festival is particularly important in southern Indian states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping all eight forms of Lakshmi, known as Ashtalakshmi, who represent wealth, courage, wisdom, fertility, strength, progeny, and prosperity. This vratam is not only an act of devotion but also a cherished cultural tradition passed on through generations of women. Newly married women often celebrate their first Varalakshmi Vratam with special enthusiasm, receiving gifts and blessings from elders in the family. The Story Behind Varalakshmi Vratam According to legend, a devout woman named Charumathi, who lived in the ancient city of Magadha, was visited by Goddess Lakshmi in a dream. The Goddess instructed her to perform a special vrat (fast) to receive divine blessings. Charumathi followed the instructions and performed the vrat with sincerity, joined by other women in her village. As a result, their lives were filled with wealth, happiness, and peace. Since then, women have been observing this vrat every year to seek the same blessings from Goddess Varalakshmi. Varalakshmi Vratam 2025: Rituals and Puja Vidhi The festival day begins early, with women waking before sunrise to clean their homes and take a ritual bath. They then prepare for the puja by following these traditional steps: Cleaning and decorating the puja area: The worship space is cleaned and purified with Gangajal (holy water), and decorated with flowers and rangolis. Setting up the Kalash: A pot (Kalash) filled with water is placed on a plate with raw rice (akshat). A coconut wrapped in a red cloth is placed on top, and the Kalash is adorned with turmeric, kumkum, bangles, and jewelry. Placing the idol or image of Goddess Lakshmi: A photo or idol of Goddess Varalakshmi is set up and decorated with sarees, garlands, and ornaments. Offerings: Devotees offer fruits, flowers, sweets, betel leaves, and coins to the Goddess. Traditional dishes like pulihora, payasam, and vadas are also made. Mantras and Aarti: Vedic chants, including the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names of Lakshmi), are recited. The puja concludes with the aarti and the singing of hymns like 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata." Fasting: Women fast until the puja is complete. Some eat only sattvik food, while others fast until nightfall. Once the rituals are done, women tie sacred threads (raksha) on their wrists for protection and blessings. Prasad is distributed, and elders are offered respect. Varalakshmi Vratam 2025: Celebration and Decorations Varalakshmi Vratam is not just a religious occasion but also a time for joy and celebration. Women wear traditional silk sarees and jewellery. Homes are beautifully decorated with mango leaves, marigold flowers, diyas (oil lamps), scented candles, and tea light holders. These lights are believed to invite divine energy and drive away negativity. Rangolis in vibrant colours are drawn at entrances to welcome the Goddess, and traditional music or bhajans play in the background, creating a festive atmosphere. Some families even invite friends and neighbours to join the puja, followed by a meal and exchange of gifts. Varalakshmi Vratam 2025: Jewellery and Return Gifts Jewellery plays a key role in the celebration. The Kalash and the idol of Goddess Lakshmi are adorned with gold necklaces, earrings, bangles, and toe rings. This not only symbolises wealth and devotion but also reflects the grandeur of the celebration. Newly married women are often gifted silver pots (chombus), Lakshmi faces (Ambal Mugam), gold coins, and bangles by their in-laws. Once the puja is over, return gifts (tambulam) are given to other women who attended, usually including bangles, sarees, sweets, and kumkum packets.
