Lovlina Borgohain Alleges BFI Official Of Gender Discrimination; IOA To Convene Meeting
Last Updated: Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain accused BFI official Col Arun Malik of disrespectful and gender-biased behaviour. SAI has launched an investigation. Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has accused a senior official of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) of disrespectful and gender-biased behaviour — an allegation now under investigation by a Sports Authority of India (SAI)-appointed panel. Lovlina, a world champion and one of India's most decorated boxers, formally addressed her complaint to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, SAI's Director General, the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) division, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and BFI. The allegation centres around a Zoom meeting held on July 8, where she says BFI executive director Col Arun Malik 'humiliated" her when she requested the inclusion of her personal coach in the national camp and during her upcoming European training stint. According to Lovlina, Malik responded in an aggressive tone. 'He blatantly told me to 'shut up, lower your head and do as we say.' His words were not only disrespectful but also carried an alarming tone of gender-discriminatory and authoritarian dominance — something that no one, especially a woman who has brought honour to the nation, should be subjected to," she wrote. The 26-year-old boxer added that she felt 'small, unheard, and powerless" during the exchange, calling the incident 'not just a personal insult" but 'an attack on every woman athlete who dreams of standing tall, both in and outside the ring." Col Malik has firmly denied the charges, calling them 'devoid of any merit." 'Lovlina's requests were considered and respectfully declined, as they are inconsistent with BFI policy," he stated, referring to the 2025 selection rules that require all athletes to attend national camps. 'In the interest of fairness and uniformity, BFI does not permit personal coaches or support staff within the National Camp." The IOA has since formed a three-member inquiry committee comprising TOPS CEO N S Johal, athlete representative Sharath Kamal, and a female legal expert. The panel was expected to report within two weeks, but a member cited scheduling conflicts for the delay. The entire Zoom interaction was recorded, and Malik has requested the footage to be reviewed. Meanwhile, Lovlina has chosen to stay focused on her training. 'I don't want to focus on this right now because it will affect my game," she said. 'I will wait for the committee's decision."
