Myanmar earthquake: Milwaukee's Burmese community reacts, offers support
More than 1,600 people are dead following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar.
The devastating earthquake is top of mind for those in Milwaukee's Burmese community.
A local Burmese restaurant in Milwaukee says it will donate 50% of all appetizer sales in April to help those impacted.
MILWAUKEE - There's a desperate search for survivors after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar. The death toll jumped to more than 1,600, and there's concern in Milwaukee's Burmese community.
Local perspective
At the Myanmar Asian Market in Milwaukee, shoppers couldn't help but think of the heartbreak and horror in their home country.

"I called my sister and my sister told me they are okay," said May Aung.
It's a feeling of relief for Aung who is from Myanmar, also known as Burma. There, it's a race against time to find people in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
"My brother's house was just shaking, but they're OK," Aung added.
Aung said her family members survived the earthquake, which also rocked nearby Thailand. Myanmar's ruling military said Saturday morning that the death toll rose to more than 1,600. Thousands more are injured. Dozens are missing.

"Really sad. My family was crying. My dad was crying. I'm like, 'It's OK, whatever happens, happens,'" said Ismail Junior.
What you can do
This Asian market is far from the only spot reeling from that deadly, devastating earthquake.
The Bay View restaurant, Ni Burmese, wrote on social media: "Tragedies like this remind us how important it is to stay informed, support one another, and help in any way we can."
The restaurant told FOX6 News it will be donating 50% of all appetizer sales for the month of April to aid those impacted.

FOX6 showed the earthquake aftermath to Biva Yauchler, who was born in Myanmar.
"Lots of my uncles and aunts and cousins are still in Myanmar," said Yauchler. "People from Myanmar are the kindest, nicest people with the most warm hearts."
Like everyone who FOX6 talked with there, she left the market focused on family.
"I will talk to my mom right away, reach out to my relatives right away," Yauchler said.

Shortly after learning of the quake, President Donald Trump said on Friday that the U.S. was going to help with the response.

Woman wins 2025 Florida Python Challenge as record amount of snakes removed
Nearly 300 Burmese pythons were removed during a record-setting Florida Python Challenge this year, state wildlife officials said. The 10-day competition that ran from July 11-20 resulted in a record 294 invasive pythons being removed, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said Wednesday. Just 195 pythons were caught during last year's challenge. A total of 934 participants from 30 states and Canada were involved in this year's hunt which included eight official locations including Everglades National Park. The winner of the $10,000 ultimate grand prize this year was Taylor Stanberry, who removed a whopping 60 pythons. Stanberry promotes herself as a 'venomous keeper' and 'venomous relocator' from Naples on her Instagram page. The rest of the approximate $15,000 in prizes was divided among competitors in the contest's three categories: novice, professional and military. Donna Kalil, who last year caught 19 pythons in the professional category, captured 56 this year. The most pythons caught by a novice were 14 by Krista Hoekstra, while John Southworth led the military category with 5. The longest python caught this year was 15 feet, 11 inches by a novice, Michael Marousky. The longest caught in the military category was 11 feet, 2 inches by Jonathan Miller, while the longest caught by a professional was 9 feet, 8 inches by Kennith Chamberland. Burmese pythons are one of the state's most notorious invasive species, and the FWC has implemented several efforts to remove the large nonvenomous constrictors from our ecosystem — primarily by humanely killing them. To incentivize their removal, Florida hosts the annual python challenges. More than 23,500 pythons were removed from natural areas in the state of Florida between 2000 and April 2025, according to the FWC. The amount of pythons captured and removed increased drastically once the paid challenge was launched in 2017. 'The record number of invasive pythons removed from the Everglades during this year's competition is a big win for native wildlife. With over 1,400 pythons removed during all Florida Python Challenge events to date and over 16,000 pythons removed by FWC and South Florida Water Management District contractors since 2017, collective efforts are the key to continue addressing the threats Burmese pythons pose to Florida's native wildlife and ecosystems,' FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto said in a statement Wednesday.

Momofuku's Pork Belly Bao Still Sings 20 Years Later
When I moved to New York City in my 20s, one of my first stops was Momofuku Noodle Bar. At that point, the famed East Village noodle joint had been open for over a decade, and I needed to know what the pork belly bao tasted like. I'd seen them featured in No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain cheerfully diving in, his fingertips glistening with rendered pork fat. I'd heard David Chang discuss them at length on NPR. I'd read about them in countless food magazines. This was before Momofuku had outposts in Los Angeles and Las Vegas or a consumer packaged goods brand; visiting felt like a rite of passage. That first bite was jovial; unctuous and rich, sweet from the hoisin sauce, freshened by sliced cucumbers. The bao was pillowy soft, holding every element together perfectly. I understood then why Momofuku had captured the attention of New Yorkers, just as I understand why, now — 20 years later — it remains an institution. Making the pork belly at home isn't complicated, but does require patience. For shortcuts, use store bought mantou buns (they can typically be found in the frozen food section of Asian grocery stores and are easily steamed). Be sure to pair the pork belly with hoisin sauce and thinly sliced cucumbers to really replicate that Beijing duck-inspired experience that put Momofuku on the map. Momofuku Pork Belly Recipe For 12 buns Ingredients: One 3-pound slab skinless pork belly ¼ cup kosher salt ¼ cup sugar Instructions: Step 1: Nestle the belly into a roasting pan or other oven-safe vessel that holds it snugly. Mix together the salt and sugar in a small bowl and rub the mix all over the meat; discard any excess salt-and-sugar mixture. Cover the container with plastic wrap and put it into the fridge for at least 6 hours, but no longer than 24. Step 2: Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Step 3: Discard any liquid that accumulated in the container. Put the belly in the oven, fat side up, and cook for 1 hour, basting it with the rendered fat at the halfway point, until it's an appetizing golden brown. Step 4: Turn the oven temperature down to 250 degrees and cook for another 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, until the belly is tender — it shouldn't be falling apart, but it should have a down pillow–like yield to a firm finger poke. Remove the pan from the oven and transfer the belly to a plate. Decant the fat and the meat juices from the pan and reserve. Allow the belly to cool slightly. Step 5: When it's cool enough to handle, wrap the belly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and put it in the fridge until it's thoroughly chilled and firm. (You can skip this step if you're pressed for time, but the only way to get neat, nice-looking slices is to chill the belly thoroughly before slicing it.) Step 6: Cut the pork belly into ½-inch-thick slices that are about 2 inches long. Warm them for serving in a pan over medium heat, just for a minute or two, until they are jiggly soft and heated through. Use at once.
