New Haven commemorates Memorial Day with two ceremonies

Yahoo26-05-2025
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Veterans, city leaders and neighbors gathered on Long Wharf in New Haven on Sunday to honor those who gave their lives in service of the United States.
The event took place at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park
'As a veteran, I do mostly interfacing with people who aren't veterans, so it was great to get the invite,' said retired Navy SEAL James Hatch. 'It's actually kind of magic, this line being a longitudinal line intersecting with Vietnam, which I thought was an incredible story.'

USS New Orleans Catches Fire Off The Coast Of Japan

The U.S. Navy's San Antonio class amphibious warfare ship USS New Orleans suffered a fire today while it was off White Beach in Uruma City on the Japanese island of Okinawa. A U.S. official has confirmed to TWZ that the blaze has been contained, but it is unclear at this time if it has been fully extinguished. The fire started at about 5:00 PM local time (4:00 AM Eastern), according to NHK in Japan. At the time of writing, there have been no reports of casualties, and the cause and extent of the damage remain unknown. The New Orleans is homeported in Sasebo on the Japanese home island of Kyushu to the north, and is assigned to the U.S. 7th Fleet. 'Crews are responding to a fire aboard USS New Orleans (LPD 18) this evening, Aug. 20, (Japan Time), which is in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan,' another Navy spokesperson had earlier told TWZ in a statement. A Navy spokesperson earlier told TWZ that they believed that the ship's crew, plus the two tugs from White Beach, had been actively fighting the fire. Okinawa's White Beach is 'a staging area for Marines and their equipment based on Okinawa,' according to the Navy. 'This departure point allows utility landing craft and air-cushioned landing vehicles to ferry troops, vehicles and equipment to amphibious ships pier side or at sea.' The cause of the fire and extent of the damage will be investigated, a Navy spokesperson also told TWZ. This is a developing story. Contact the author: howard@ Solve the daily Crossword

Columbus trash schedule changing for half the city. See if you're impacted by the switch.

Columbus announced that about half of the households in the city that get weekly trash pickup will be assigned a new pickup date and route color starting Sept. 2. Public Service Director Kelly Scocco said the changes are an effort to rebalance the city's trash routes and manage the city's growth. Columbus residents will be able to see if their pickup day or their route color has changed starting on Sept. 1. Beginning that day, residents can use the city's PickUp CBUS smartphone app or the Collection Day Lookup tool on the city's website to see how their trash schedule has changed. For the first two weeks of the new routes, the city is dedicating extra trucks to pick up trash for residents who missed their new collection day. Residents can call 311 to report a missed pickup, according to the press release. When will trash be collected for Labor Day? While half of the city will be getting used to new trash routes, Labor Day will come along and nudge trash collection forward a day. If you live in one of the city's "Color Collection" areas, your trash day will move by one day the week of Labor Day. For example, residents in the pink color collection zone have had their trash picked up on Mondays since July 7. Starting with Sept. 2, their trash will be picked up on Tuesdays, at least until Columbus Day, when trash pickup days will move again. The full-color collection schedule is available here. Some residents don't live in a color zone and instead have a two-day window when their trash is picked up every week. Typically, trash gets collected on the first day of this two-day window, but during holiday weeks, it is instead picked up on the second day of the window if your regular collection date falls on or after the holiday, according to the city of Columbus' website. For example, if your window is usually Monday and Tuesday, your trash will be picked up on Tuesday the week of Labor Day. If you still need help figuring out when your garbage will go away, you can use the city's Collection Day Lookup or call the city's Color Collection Hotline numbers listed below. Crews have been fighting flames aboard USS New Orleans, a US Navy amphibious warship that caught fire in Japan

A fire broke out aboard the US Navy amphibious warship USS New Orleans in Japan on Wednesday evening. Navy sailors have been battling the blaze, the cause of which is unknown. Whether the fire has been extinguished and the extent of the damage is also unclear at this time. The Navy confirmed the fire on Wednesday morning. "Crews are responding to a fire aboard USS New Orleans (LPD 18) this evening, Aug. 20, (Japan Time), which is in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan. We will provide more details are they become available," a Navy spokesperson told Business Insider. According to local Japanese media, Japan's Coast Guard assisted with firefighting activities around 5 pm local time. Footage from local broadcasting showed firefighting ships assisting with putting out the flames. The warship is designed to move Marines, their gear, and aircraft like CH-46 Sea Knights and MV-22 Ospreys into combat zones. It was docked at White Beach Naval Facility in Okinawa when the fire broke out. The Navy previously fought a vicious fire aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego in July 2020, an incident that saw four days of around-the-clock efforts to put out all active fires aboard the ship. That fire left 62 people — 40 sailors and 23 civilians — injured from smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. Repairs for the USS Bonhomme Richard, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, were estimated to take up to seven years and cost billions of dollars. It was ultimately decommissioned and scrapped.
