SEC legend excited about the Oklahoma Sooners heading into 2025
The Oklahoma Sooners may have questions surrounding the team heading into the 2025 season, but there's also a lot of optimism. The Sooners' defense looks ready to roll once again after a strong 2024 season. Armed with a quarterback in John Mateer, who is one of the best in the game, the Sooners have the makings of a team that could contend in 2025.
David Pollack, a former two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-American for the Georgia Bulldogs, is a believer in the Sooners. Joining Dari Nowkah and Josh Helmer on the Dari Nowkah Show on KREF, Pollack said, "I love OU this year."
Pollack loves what the Oklahoma Sooners have up front, calling the Sooners' defensive line "the best in the conference." The former defensive end said, "If I'm gonna play in a system, I wanna play in Oklahoma's. Like, penetrate, make (tackles for loss), get sacks. Like, I think they're going to be a problem. Venables calling the plays."
Defense is certainly a strength of the Oklahoma Sooners in 2025. Brent Venables has remade the defense over the last four years and now has it primed to be his best defense yet as the head coach at Oklahoma. And with Venables returning to playcalling duties, the Sooners will benefit from one of the best defensive minds in the history of the game leading the charge.
But Pollack's praise didn't stop there. He's excited about what Oklahoma has to offer on offense as well.
"(Ben) Arbuckle on the offensive side," Pollack said. "Obviously, getting your quarterback (John Mateer). Like, that kid is a baller. Here's what I love about him. Obviously, he was at Washington State and he didn't have the greatest supporting cast in the world or the greatest offensive line but what I loved about him is when you watch the scramble play... he's going to make those off-script plays that you guys are used to seeing because you've had some freak athletes with Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield and the list goes on and on."
Mateer's ability to make a play when things are breaking down around him might be his greatest quality. 404 of his 1,008 rushing yards came on scrambles in 2024. He does a great job of avoiding pressure and making plays on the move.
In addition to Mateer, Pollack is excited about the addition of running back Jaydn Ott and believes the Sooners did a good job in the transfer portal, adding players where they needed to. Concluding that if Oklahoma's schedule wasn't so tough, they would be a playoff team in his mind.
Pollack said, "If y'all schedule wasn't Murderer's Row, I'm putting you in the playoffs."
The schedule may be tough in 2025, but it's an opportunity for the Sooners to make some noise this year. If they get improvement on both sides of the ball, they'll have a chance to live up to Venables' belief that, "There's no game on our schedule that we can't win."

Oklahoma Sooners are a better team than ESPN is giving them credit for
The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2025 season outside of the top 25 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It's an unfamiliar situation for one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. But that's what happens when everything that could go wrong does for the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are looking to rewrite the narratives and prove they're a better team than they were a year ago. While a number of national analysts think highly of the Sooners, there are some who are taking a wait-and-see approach. Over at ESPN, the Sooners were dubbed as long shots for the College Football Playoff in their SEC preview. In what figures to be a big season for Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, the Sooners added former Washington State quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott from Cal. The defense should be solid, and if new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle can turn things around, the Sooners might be a sleeper. The Sooners play Texas in Dallas and South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama on the road. - Mark Schlabach, ESPN The Sooners enter the season with a lot to prove to the nation after what happened last season. But this is a team that's made a lot of changes to the personnel for an offense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season. The hope is that Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer can at least return the offense to respectability. With Brent Venables calling the defense, one that figures to be really good again in 2025, the Sooners' offense doesn't have to score 40 or 50 points per game to be successful. And that should be encouraging for Oklahoma. Even though the metrics say the schedule is difficult this year, the reality is that the Sooners are significantly improved on paper and should be better prepared to play every team on their slate. Oklahoma may be considered a long shot due to what happened in 2024 or the schedule, but they're actually closer to a playoff team than many are willing to admit. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander receives hometown Hamilton's Key to the City, street name
The celebrations continue for the Oklahoma City Thunder's NBA championship. One of the better traditions you see every summer is following along players from the title winner to see what they did with their turn carrying around the prestigious Larry O'Brien trophy. As the calendar flipped to August, this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate a lifelong accomplishment. Most of the time, you see players from the NBA champion who return to their hometown and celebrate their impending ring. Jaylin Williams and Isaiah Joe threw an Arkansas parade. Isaiah Hartenstein returned to Germany with the trophy. Now add Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the list. Gilgeous-Alexander was in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on Thursday. His hometown held a Shai Rally Day to celebrate his historic individual season, which included an MVP, Conference Finals MVP, NBA Finals MVP and scoring title. At the event, Gilgeous-Alexander was rewarded with a Key to the City and a street named after him. He discussed growing up in Hamilton and what it meant to his ascension from a decent lottery pick to an MVP winner. The 27-year-old is always proud of his roots. It's been quite the year for Gilgeous-Alexander. Just from this offseason alone, he signed a supermax contract extension, was named the NBA 2K26 cover athlete, won a couple of ESPY awards and has now been given a couple of momentos from his hometown for what he accomplished this past season. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer named to O'Brien Award watch list
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was one of 36 players named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list on Thursday. The O'Brien Award is given to the nation's top quarterback at the conclusion of each season. The list can change at midseason, when players may be added or removed, and the 35-quarterback class will be named October 28. After that, the list narrows to semifinalists on November 12 and a group of three finalists on November 25. The winner will be presented with the award during the College Football Awards on December 12. Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, is one of six quarterbacks who were named semifinalists last year. The others are Penn State's Drew Allar, Navy's Blake Horvath, SMU's Kevin Jennings, Clemson's Cade Klubnik, and Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia. Cam Ward won the award last year and was subsequently taken first overall in the NFL Draft. Mateer led FBS in total touchdowns last year with the Cougars, throwing for 29 scores and running for another 15. He followed his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, to Oklahoma via the transfer portal after OU coach Brent Venables hired Arbuckle as the Sooners' new offensive coordinator in December. Seven SEC quarterbacks, including Mateer and Pavia, were named to the initial list. Taylen Green (Arkansas), DJ Lagway (Florida), Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), and LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) are the others. Four Oklahoma quarterbacks have won the award since its inception in 1977. Jason White won it in back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004, Sam Bradford won it in 2008, and then Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray each won the award in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
