Sculpture trail unveiled to help regenerate town
A sculpture trail aimed at regenerating a Norfolk town through art and culture will be officially unveiled on Friday.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council invested £380,000 in the project, largely through the government's Town Deal Fund.
Artworks commissioned by local, national and international artists have been installed over the past six weeks.
Councillor Carl Smith, leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: ''The new trail is simply fantastic. I, like many others, have watched it take shape over the past few months and am delighted it is now complete."
The pieces all celebrated the best of Great Yarmouth, from its role as a circus capital, its maritime and medieval history, through to its embrace of clean energy and transport links.
The launch will start at midday with a ceremonial unveiling of the "Yarn with Ernie" sculpture - created in honour of local artist and potter Ernie Childs - in the town's recently revamped Market Place.
A walking tour of the sculptures will take place, with members of the public invited to join civic dignitaries, including High Steward of Great Yarmouth Henry Cator OBE, who is chair of the Great Yarmouth Town Deal Board.
A number of the artists who created the pieces will also be at the launch to talk to people about their works.
Among the guests will be a representative of the Ukrainian Embassy, attending in honour of Alex Lidagovsky - whose seven-metre-tall Tightrope Walker is the UK's first permanent sculpture by a Ukrainian artist.
Mr Lidagovsky was forced to leave Kyiv after the Russian invasion in 2022. His studio was subsequently bombed before he arrived in the UK.
The trail also featured a unique section of tiled paving outside Christchurch created by Great Yarmouth's Reprezent Project to reflect the cultural impact of the town's Portuguese community.
It is the only piece of traditional Portuguese pavement art - or Calçada Portuguesa - in the UK, and depicts Phillippa of Lancaster, who became Queen of Portugal through marriage to King Joao I.
Great Yarmouth Heritage Guides will be on hand to lead tours and distribute free maps of the route.

Victoria Square to be transformed as 200,000 people head to Birmingham
Artwork and photography chronicling the story of Black Sabbath is set to appear in one of Birmingham's most prominent city squares ahead of Ozzy Osbourne's final gig at Villa Park Stadium. Central BID has announced that the free outdoor exhibition will feature archive images of Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler and will open on Wednesday, June 25. As well as the snaps, it'll be an opportunity to tell the story of the band's Aston roots, with facts featuring throughout to help teach visitors of the band's legacy. Their upcoming reunion show will take place on Saturday, July 5 at Villa Park Stadium and the show, titled Back To The Beginning, will be live streamed around the world after live tickets sold out in less than 16 minutes. Fans are expected to visit the city in their thousands, with four other huge events taking place on the same weekend taking the expected influx to over 200,000 people. Central BID has confirmed that the outdoor exhibition will run throughout the summer with a closing date yet to be announced. It's the third free celebration of Black Sabbath that Central BID has announced in the last two weeks. As well as the photography display, it is also working with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG) and Sharon Osbourne Management to create an indoor exhibition at the museum. Titled Working Class Hero, it will feature some of Ozzy's most impressive accolades, including his Grammy Awards and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame memorabilia. Central BID has also commissioned Mr Murals, a spray artist, to transform a stretch of wall on Navigation Street into a 40m-long Black Sabbath mural, featuring their logo and photorealistic portraits from the last seven decades. Sam Watson, chair of Central BID Birmingham, said: "Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath helped shape modern music and put Birmingham on the global cultural map. "These exhibitions are a celebration of our city's creativity, heritage and influence – and a chance for fans to walk in the footsteps of legends."

American TikTok star planning another visit to 'beautiful' Bradford
A SOCIAL media star from America says he is already planning his next trip to Bradford after visiting the city for the first time. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - is most known for making food and travel videos across the UK. The 26-year-old, who lives in Tennessee, fell in love with Yorkshire after tracing his ancestry back to different parts of the UK. His travels take him all over the country, having recently explored Blackpool, Nottingham, and Sheffield. Kalani Smith - who posts under the social media handle 'Kalanighosthunter' and 'Kalani Vlogs' - visits Bradford (Image: UGC) His latest adventure to Bradford was inspired by a satirical comment left under one of his recent videos. Kalani and his wife Savannah took up the offer and stopped by Bradford city centre for a day trip. He is now hoping to return and explore other places in the district. 'It was a place people told me not to go to, I guess - the comment was obviously satire,' Kalani told the T&A. 'I wanted to go because I heard it's the best place to get a curry. Up until that point I just knew Bradford was the place for a curry. 'Whitby is one of my favourite places. 'You can definitely tell there's a lot of diverse culture in Bradford - there's so many different groups of folks there. You can see why it won the City of Culture. Not in a bad way either, there's not many spots you can go into like that. London feels like that, there's so many different people melding in one spot. I thought that was really cool.' The couple decided to ask RateMyTakeaway's Danny Malin for his recommendations. 'Danny's a good friend of mine,' said Kalani. 'I asked him, being a Yorkshire lad, where he recommended in Bradford. He said the Sweet Centre for a curry. 'I will say it's different than ones I've had around the UK. The Sweet Centre ones are more authentic to Kashmir, they don't have all of the gravy sauce that I call them British curries now would have. I had lamb on the bone and spinach and chicken. You can really taste the protein and spice better that way. I enjoyed it. At the Sweet Centre (Image: UGC) 'I still like dunking my Naan in some chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, but it was really nice to get an authentic taste of what the curry was supposed to be like - or what it evolved from. 'In terms of authenticity, that's probably the most authentic curry I've had in the UK. It was very tasty.' He added: 'A few of my fans actually came up to me while I was streaming, people from Bradford that were super grateful I showed up. They were excited because they said not many people travel to Bradford.' Speaking about what he's learned on his explorations around the UK, he said: 'I've learned especially here if someone's telling me not to go somewhere, odds are they've never even stepped foot in the place. It's just a lot of predisposed opinions. 'Me and my wife both made a comment that it was absolutely beautiful, especially by City Hall and other spots. It kind of reminded us of some other cities we really enjoy. That wasn't something I was expecting, especially with the comments that people leave about Bradford, it was a nice surprise. 'It makes a difference as a content creator being able to highlight places that maybe wouldn't be an American's first choice or even tenth choice to go. 'One thing I am happy my platform has done is its shown Brits they can travel within the UK to places they haven't been, see stuff that is absolutely beautiful, or food that's incredible, and it's been in their backyard and they just never really opened their eyes or knew what was there. "Although the trips to Spain are great, there's also spots here in the UK that you never knew existed.'
