AI supercomputer coming to the Bay Area
The Brief
The U.S. Department of Energy plans to build a new flagship supercomputer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The new machine will be ten times more powerful than the current supercomputer.
The supercomputer is planned to be completed by the end of 2026 and ready for users by 2027.
BERKELEY, Calif. - U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright wrapped up a week of visits to three national labs in the Bay Area, with a big announcement Thursday, saying the Department of Energy plans to build a new flagship supercomputer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in partnership with Dell and NVIDIA.
"It will advance scientific discovery from chemistry to physics to biology and all powered, unleashing this power of artificial intelligence," Secretary White said.
The new supercomputer is being named after UC Berkeley Professor and Nobel Laureate Jennifer Doudna.
Doudna said she's honored to have the new supercomputer bear her name. She added her own ground-breaking CRISPR research started with a small grant from the DOE, and hopes funding will continue to advance basic research.
"I've always valued fundamental research. I think it does lead to great truths that we can't predict, and CRISPR is a great shining example. It was a small DOE grant that allowed us to work on CRISPR in the beginning," Doudna said.
The machine
NVIDIA CEO Jenson Huang and Dell Senior Vice President Paul Perez said the Doudna computer will be ten times more powerful than the current supercomputer and utilize cutting-edge Dell servers with the latest NVIDIA AI technology.
"What truly sets this system apart is the seamless integration of high performance computing and AI capabilities," Perez said.
"It's going to unify three ways of doing computing," Huang said. "Principle simulations, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. So we can simulate electrons using quantum computing, take the ground truth from that simulation and train an AI model at a very large scale. These will be possible for the very first time. Here."
The Berkeley National Lab directors gave a rare tour of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), showing the space already designated for the new Doudna supercomputer.
What they're saying
The announcement comes as the Trump administration has been scaling back research funding. In April, the Department of Energy announced more than $400 million dollars in cuts to research administrative support funding.
"I think it's important to understand that science requires infrastructure. It requires administration. There are costs associated with that so we have to figure out the right way to pay for that," Doudna said.
KTVU asked Secretary White whether his visit this week to Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Livermore Lab, and the Stanford SLAC Lab comes with any takeaways or commitment to funding.
"AI and fusion are things you will see supercharged over the next four years, and if I can add a third one, quantum computing," White replied.
Secretary Wright says the plan is to have the Doudna supercomputer completed by the end of 2026 and ready for users by 2027.
"I think the Secretary said the right words, and now we have to see if the right things happen to maintain the real prominence of American science," Doudna said.

Nvidia on track to reclaim crown as world's most valuable company as $1 trillion rally continues
Nvidia (NVDA) was on pace to overtake Microsoft (MSFT) as the world's most valuable company Tuesday, with the AI chipmaker's market capitalization of $3.449 trillion eclipsing the software giant's $3.4443 trillion during late afternoon trading. Nvidia stock has gained roughly 50% since hitting a 12-month low of just over $94 in early April, adding more than $1 trillion to the company's market capitalization as investors pile back in to the so-called 'Magnificent Seven' Big Tech stocks. Nvidia shares have been powered higher over the past week after the company's better-than-expected quarterly financial results and outlook on May 28 showed the chipmaker's revenue continuing to grow despite losing billions in sales from lost revenue to China due to a recent US export ban. Nvidia's first quarter earnings report also showed the company has overcome supply chain hurdles to deliver its powerful, complex, Blackwell AI servers to Big Tech customers such as Microsoft. The stock rose as much as 3% Tuesday as Nvidia's contract chip manufacturer TSMC reaffirmed that AI chip demand remains robust and a major customer, CoreWeave (CRWV), secured a new data center lease (which, once online, would be filled with Nvidia's chips). Nvidia stock has had a volatile year, as investors questioned the sustainability of AI demand and Trump's trade war hammered shares. Microsoft had held the top spot as the world's most valuable company since early May, and the company has traded places atop the leaderboard back and forth this year with Apple (AAPL). Nvidia last held the distinction in January. Nvidia's recent gains have put the stock back in positive territory for the year, with the stock up roughly 5% year to date, while Microsoft has gained nearly 10% over that time frame. Meanwhile, Apple shares are down roughly 19% in 2025 as the company faces stiff AI competition and President Trump has threatened to tariff imports of its iPhones. After 60 years, the search for a missing plane in Lake Superior remains fruitless
Experts searching for plane wreckage in Michigan's Lake Superior turned up found logs and rocks on the bottom but no debris from an aircraft that crashed nearly 60 years ago carrying three people on a scientific assignment. A team from Michigan Technological University returned last week by boat to get closer to 16 targets that appeared on sonar last fall, more than 200 feet (61 meters) below the surface of the vast lake. The crew used side-scan sonar and other remote technology. 'We did not locate any sign of the wreckage of the missing aircraft,' said Travis White, a research engineer at the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech. 'However, we did validate our technical approach, as we found physical objects in each target location.' The Beechcraft plane carrying pilot Robert Carew, co-pilot Gordon Jones and graduate student Velayudh Krishna Menon left Madison, Wisconsin, for Lake Superior on Oct. 23, 1968. They were collecting data on temperature and other lake conditions for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Seat cushions and pieces of stray metal have washed ashore over the years along the Keweenaw Peninsula. But the wreckage and the remains of the men have never been found. 'We're probably not going to find a fully intact airplane,' said Wayne Lusardi, state maritime archaeologist. An autonomous vessel was launched last September, recording sonar readings and other data. After studying those findings over the winter, White, Lusardi and others returned to Lake Superior. 'Unfortunately, the targets turned out to be mostly natural: large sunken trees, logs, rocks," White said by email. Metal cans on the lake bottom, believed to be 75 years old, give 'hope that the plane wreckage may be reasonably well-preserved and not buried,' he said. White said the next challenge will be how to continue the work. 'We may attempt a crowdfunding model to see if we can raise some funds for future mapping activities that could help us locate the plane or other historic wrecks,' he said. The initial search last fall was organized by the Smart Ships Coalition, a group of more than 60 universities, government agencies, companies and international organizations interested in maritime autonomous technologies.
