Navigating tough talks: How to discuss war, global conflicts with children

We are living in a time of conflict. As hard as it has been to deal with news of war-like situations being bombarded at us, things get a tad more difficult when you have to field questions on the topic from a child.
Discussing war with children is a lot like trying to explain why we pay taxes or discussing good touch-bad touch—complex, uncomfortable, but ultimately necessary," says Megha Joshi, clinical psychologist, department of clinical psychology, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, Delhi. 'It is essential to acknowledge that children are perceptive and attuned to our emotional states which makes it imperative to regulate our own anxieties before initiating the conversation," she explains.

Dona Singh, Delhi-based clinical psychologist, concurs that discussing war and difficult news with children can be very challenging. It is obvious and natural that we feel conflicted on whether or not to talk to them about it, she notes. 'Before having a conversation about it, it is important to assess their understanding of the particular topic and how much they know about it. Based on that information, we can decide how much to and what to tell your child," Singh advises. Since children always look to their parents for comfort, 'choosing appropriate language is crucial," she notes. For instance, use words like 'fight" rather than 'war" because younger children, Singh believes can comprehend the word 'fighting " better than 'war".
It would also be prudent to talk to them about war through stories and history. 'This way, they know what is happening and why it is happening," Singh says. Another suggestion she has is to avoid showing kids graphics or pictures. "Pictures can leave fear and trauma in their mind, so avoid it. Instead, have honest conversations with them as it helps foster trust. Be authentic but make sure the language you're using is age appropriate," Singh recommends.
Joshi cites a recent interaction to explain how close the subject hit home. 'Recently, one of my young clients, with a furrowed brow and a mix of curiosity and worry, asked me, 'Why are people fighting on TV? Will it come here too?" It struck me how deeply even the youngest among us are impacted by the current scenario," she muses. Younger children, she notes, require simplicity. 'You could explain conflict-ridden situations using lines like 'sometimes, people disagree so much that they fight. It's not the right way, but it happens, and there are people trying to make things peaceful again"," Joshi elaborates. What about when they ask more complex questions? You could say something like, 'That's a tough question, let's think about it together," she adds.
WATCHING VIOLENT NEWS THAT INVOLVES CHILDREN
This is news that can wring anyone's heart but on the topic of talking to your children about bombing and other incidents that involve children being affected by violence, Joshi says, 'Addressing violent news that directly involves children requires both empathy and forthrightness. From a trauma psychology perspective, avoidance is counterproductive." Singh recommends using the sandwich method of conversation: 'You start with a positive line, end with a positive but you place the negative topic in between." An example of such a conversation according to Singh would be: 'The world has both good and bad people. While people are mostly good, sometimes, there can be bad people who can hurt others including children." End it on a note that goes '…the world is a nice place where people are kind and value one another." Singh further elaborates that while talking about 'bad people or perpetrators or terrorists', parents should also mention people who 'protectors' such as security people, police, the armed forces and so on.

Remind them that they are safe. Balance the gravity of this kind of news, Joshi adds, with narratives of post-traumatic growth and community support. 'Highlight how people come together to help those affected, including stories of medical and psychological support for survivors. This not only shifts the focus from the tragedy itself but also underscores human compassion and resilience," she says.
WAYS TO PREPARE A CHILD MENTALLY TO THE POSSIBILITY OF WITNESSING A WAR
Start by providing your children with honest information in a reassuring and a non-threatening way. 'Create a space where the child can express his fears and anxiety. Let them know that it is okay to ask questions. You have to reassure them and make sure they are safe and protected," says Singh.
Anxiety in children often presents with somatic symptoms—stomach aches, headaches, or changes in sleep patterns. Since they don't always possess the vocabulary to pinpoint how they feel, Joshi suggests using emotional labeling. This would look like asking: It seems like something is bothering you. Want to talk about it? "Naming the emotion facilitates affective processing and reduces internal distress," explains Joshi.
Apart from diaphragmatic breathing, another effective strategy, according to Joshi is, progressive muscle relaxation where you guide children to tense and then release muscle groups to alleviate somatic tension.
When you do encounter a situation where air sirens become a reality, as in the recent Indo-Pak conflict, Singh's advice is to educate kids about sirens in a simple way. 'Equate it to a fire alarm. Explain that just like how an alarm allows people to take safety measures, a siren too alerts people and allows them to take precautionary measures," she notes. Also keep them informed about emergency plans and protocols. 'Approach it like you would teach them about life safety rules– keep it simple," says Singh.
Fostering emotional resilience is another must. 'Teach them deep breathing techniques and to focus on the present– we are safe now, we can be relaxed," adds Singh with one final tip: 'It pays to remember that children do what they see. So, if your kids see you manage yourself well in a situation, they will too."

Over 100 trees, mostly native variety of acacia trees (naatu karuvelam) with active bird nests are being illegally felled by locals at Vaniyanthal lake, a wetland ecosystem at Sankarapuram taluk in Kallakurichi district. The tree felling has been continuing over the past few days and nearly 30% of the total 900 trees in and around the lake have been cut, according to environmentalists. The lake serves as a critical breeding ground for various waterbird species and a foraging ground for several migratory species. A rapid assessment report prepared by Suzhal Arivom, a Chennai-based conservation non-governmental organisation shows that several live and used nests of birds were destroyed and chicks of the birds were killed in the process. The lake is a thriving nesting habitat for birds especially Herons and this destruction constitutes a grave ecological violation. The lake has also recorded the presence of other fauna such as Black-naped hare, freshwater terrapins, Bengal monitor Lizard and Bengal fox. According to Deepak V., a naturalist with Suzhal Arivom, 'The ongoing felling of these trees poses a direct threat to the breeding cycles and overall survival of waterbird population that rely on these trees for nesting. Preliminary estimates show that over 750 nests were there on the trees inside the lake which are now at risk due to this habitat destruction. The affected nests belong to a variety of nesting bird species including Asian Openbill, Little Egret, Black-crowned Night Heron, Indian Pond Heron and Grey Heron.' While a comprehensive species inventory is yet to be taken, preliminary observations suggest that severe damage has been done to the nesting and roosting sites. The most immediate and severe impact is the direct destruction of critical nesting habits. This disrupts the breeding cycle and can lead to a decline in local bird population. The illegal tree felling not only threatens nesting and migratory bid populations but also endangers other faunal species that depend on this habitat for shelter, breeding and survival. 'Waterbirds exhibit strong site fidelity, often returning to the same tree or location to nest across multiple breeding seasons. Many species are known to reuse their nest for several years. In Tamil Nadu, the gum Arabic tree, commonly found around lakes, is the most preferred and widely used tree species for nesting by waterbirds. Even dead trees play a significant ecological role - they serve as nesting sites for cavity-nesting birds and provide essential materials for nest building,' Deepak said. According to Suzhal Arivom, destroying such critical habitats not only threatens the survival of nesting birds but also creates a strong sense of aversion to the site. This disruption can lead to the permanent abandonment of the area as a breeding ground, resulting in the irreversible loss of a crucial nesting site for herons. Environmentalists have demanded the Forest Department to immediately intervene and stop the illegal felling of trees. It is crucial to document the biodiversity at this lake and enhance patrolling and continuous monitoring to ensure that no further depletion is done. According to a naturalist, 'The lake should be officially demarcated and must be preserved to maintain their suitability as a long-term breeding habitat. Any future tree-cutting activity in and around the lake should only be undertaken only after a thorough ecological assessment of the nesting site, by the Forest Department and ornithologists. The district administration should also institutionalise mandatory environmental impact assessment before felling trees in and around wetland areas and settled social forests.' A Forest Department official said the land belonged to the Public Works Department and the trees were planted by the Forest Department. The 'karuvelam' trees are regularly auctioned and all due procedures were followed. He said that no nests were found and birds had already left the trees. The Department will look into the incident, he said.

New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) A newly constituted NCC expedition team consisting of 20 cadets, is set to embark on a mountaineering adventure post monsoon when they will attempt to scale a peak in northern India, the Corps' director general said. Two peaks have been shortlisted by the NCC — Mt Yunam (6,111 m) in Himachal Pradesh and Mt Shalang Dhura (5,678 m) in Uttarakhand. 'One of the two peaks will be selected based on weather conditions. The team has equal number of male and females cadets, and the planned mission is in line with promoting a spirit of adventure among the youth," DG of NCC, Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh told PTI. Both are basic or beginners' peak, he said. The National Cadet Corps (NCC), the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world, was raised in 1948. Earlier in May this year, an expedition team of the NCC summited Mt Everest — the world's highest peak. 'We are now looking for the next expedition. We are still to decide on a peak, but it will be either Mt Yunam located in Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh or Mt Shalang Dhura, located in Uttarakhand," Singh said. An NCC team has earlier scaled Mt Yunam but, it will be the 'first attempt" by cadets to summit Mt Shalang Dhura, he added. This will be a post-monsoon expedition, so depending on rainfall and other weather conditions, it is likely to begin around either end-September or October, he added. The NCC DG said the Corps has already put together a team for this upcoming expedition. Around fifteen days ago, nearly 150 cadets had come to Delhi after being shortlisted by their respective directorates, and from that pool, the 20 cadets were finalised, he said. The NCC has 17 directorates spread across the country, with a total sanctioned strength of 20 lakh. It has two divisions — Junior Division and Senior Division. After they join, in the first year of Senior Division, the caders are made to train at various training academies as part of different courses, and mountaineering is also part of their training. After selection for a mountaineering expedition, they get trained for 7-10 days in Uttarkashi generally, but due to natural disaster there recently, 'we are trying to do this at another place in Uttarakhand", the DG said. Lieutenant General Singh expressed pride that 2,000 NCC cadets along with 500 My Bharat volunteers were part of the team that sat in front of the Red Fort ramparts here during the 79th Independence Day celebrations, in a formation of the 'Naya Bharat' logo. The NCC DG also attended the celebrations at Red Fort on August 15, where the defining spirit was the success of Operation Sindoor — India's decisive four-day military action in May in the wake of Pahalgam attack. '75,000 NCC cadets participated in civil defence and other related activities across the country, during the four-day period when Operation Sindoor was underway," he said. The cadets helped in traffic management and crowd control. As also in hosting blood donation camps, thus contributing to nation-building which they are trained for, the DG said, adding, that they also took part in mock drills that took place around that period. On the upcoming expedition, Lt Gen Singh said, besides the 20 cadets (average age 20-21 years), at least three officers and 10-15 support staff will be part of the team. He said every year, two expeditions are planned, one pre-monsoon and another post-monsoon. For putting together an NCC expedition team for scaling Mt Everest (8,848 m), 'we take 1.5-2 years", the DG added. Mt Everest was first conquered by New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and his sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay in 1953, and has ever since fascinated climbers and mountaineers to scale the famed peak in the mighty Himalayas. NCC cadets in the past, have successfully climbed other peaks too, including Mt Kang Yatse II (6,250 m) and Mt Abi Gamin (7,335 m).
