Suspect in kidnapping of teen from China last month arrested
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the kidnapping of an 18-year-old from China.
According to China Press, the suspect, also a Chinese citizen, claimed that he was not involved in the abduction itself and was only responsible for recording videos showing the victim being beaten.
He also insisted that he did not demand any ransom from the victim's parents.
The suspect told police that in March this year, he received a phone call from someone claiming to be a "Chinese police officer", who accused him of involvement in a credit card fraud case.
He was allegedly instructed to travel to Kuala Lumpur to film a violent video, purportedly for use in an anti-fraud publicity campaign.
The caller assured him that once the task was completed, the case against him would be dropped.
It is understood that the suspect complied and filmed two videos of a Chinese man being assaulted — one in a hotel room in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and another at an oil palm estate in Kulim, Kedah.
The footage was then sent to the "Chinese police officer".
Earlier reports revealed that the victim, a wealthy heir from China, had entered Malaysia from Singapore on April 30 when a group of fellow Chinese citizens abducted him.
The kidnappers subsequently demanded a ransom of 3.5 million yuan (approximately RM2.06 million) from the victim's parents, threatening to kill him if payment was not made.
The victim's parents, who are businesspeople based in Dubai, immediately flew to Malaysia and lodged a police report.
Within 48 hours, police arrested one suspect and successfully rescued the victim.

SIBU: A Chinese national has been sentenced to five years' jail for causing the death of Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan, 56, in an accident. Sessions Court judge Rosli Ahmad ordered on Tuesday (June 10) that Sun Xue Song, 42, was to serve the prison term from March 30, the date of his arrest. He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous or reckless driving, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Sun's counsel Terrence Tiong said in mitigation that his client was a first-time offender with no previous convictions in Malaysia or his home country. Tiong said the accused had also taken steps to help the victim's family. "Despite his limited financial means, he made a bereavement payment to the deceased's wife, not in the hope of leniency or forgiveness, but out of compassion and a sense of moral duty," he said. He contended that a long custodial sentence would also hurt Sun's innocent dependents, including his mother, 79, and his seven-year-old son, who is still in primary school and would be left without a means of support or a caregiver. DPP Cynthia Emmelda Jerry urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the accused had caused emotional trauma to the victim's family. She also said public interest had to be taken into consideration.

Chinese man pleads guilty to exporting arms to N. Korea
WASHINGTON: A Chinese man pleaded guilty on Monday to exporting guns and ammunition to North Korea, the Justice Department said. Shenghua Wen, 42, who was living illegally in the United States after overstaying his student visa, was charged with violating long-standing US sanctions against North Korea. Wen, arrested in California in December, was paid $2 million by North Korea for the arms shipments, the Justice Department said. Wen and unidentified co-conspirators allegedly concealed firearms and ammunition inside containers that were shipped from Long Beach, California, through Hong Kong to North Korea. The Justice Department said law enforcement in August seized two devices at Wen's home that he planned to send to North Korea -- a chemical threat identification device and a handheld broadband receiver that detects eavesdropping devices. In September, law enforcement seized 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition that Wen allegedly obtained to send to North Korea, the department said. Wen also attempted to obtain a civilian plane engine from a US-based broker, it said. Wen faces up to 20 years in prison for violating export controls as well as a maximum of 10 years in prison for acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government. He is due to be sentenced on August 18.
