KUCHING (Aug 1): A 64-year-old woman lost RM1,213,742 in an online love scam that began late last year.
Acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the victim lodged a report on July 26, revealing she had been deceived over several months.
The scam began in December 2024, when she was contacted via WhatsApp by someone using the name 'Zhao Yong' and the number +852 5747 3477.
After building trust, the scammer introduced another individual posing as a lawyer named 'Hai Na Bai Chuan', who claimed to be handling a cash gift on Zhao's behalf.
A third accomplice, purportedly a bank manager named 'Kamarul Ranizu', was later introduced to facilitate the transaction.
'Trusting the scammer's elaborate promises, the woman borrowed money from relatives, sold her car, and secured loans from licensed moneylenders to make a series of payments.
'Between December 2024 and July this year, she made a total of 25 transactions across 18 different bank accounts, supposedly to cover taxes and other 'processing fees'.
'Eventually realising she had been deceived, the victim reported the matter to police, disclosing the total loss of RM1,213,742,' Merbin said in a statement.
He added that this case is among eight love scams recorded by Kuching district's Commercial Crime Investigation Division between Jan 1 and July 31 this year, with combined losses totalling RM1,326,050.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, which carries a sentence of not less than one year and up to ten years in prison, whipping, and a possible fine upon conviction.
Merbin urged the public to remain vigilant when engaging with strangers online.
He also reminded that online scams are a form of commercial crime that can be avoided if individuals stay informed and cautious, fostering a safer and scam-free community. elderly woman Kuching love scam Merbin Lisa

KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of a police corporal stabbed during a patrol in Pudu last week described her shock after receiving an urgent call from the hospital requesting immediate consent for emergency surgery. Norfazliana Osman, 35, was at their home in the Pudu police quarters when Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) contacted her around 1 pm on Thursday. 'They said they needed to operate immediately and asked for consent as part of his intestines might need to be removed due to the stab wound,' she told reporters at the hospital. Her husband, Corporal Mohd Nadzri Sudiman, remains in stable condition but is still weak and requires pain management. 'I understand the risks of his job as a policeman, but as a wife, the fear is always there,' said Norfazliana, who has two children aged 11 and seven. She added that it is uncertain how long her husband will remain hospitalised, but confirmed their children have been informed of his condition. The case is being investigated under Section 307 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and obstructing a public servant, as well as Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - Bernama

Eight held over Bukit Besi cattle theft

DUNGUN: Eight people aged 17 to 73 were arrested for allegedly stealing cattle from Ladang Pinang Mas in Bukit Besi at 2.30am today. Dungun police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir said the suspects were caught in the act following a tip-off from the livestock owner, who lodged a report at 2am. She said the arrests were made during a joint operation involving the Criminal Investigation Department, patrol unit and Bukit Besi police station. "Following the report, we acted quickly and raided the area, arresting eight suspects aged between 17 and 73," she said. Police believe the case may be linked to other livestock thefts in the area. Cops seized 18 pieces of cattle meat, a shotgun with live ammunition, knives, meat-cutting tools, seven mobile phones and two vehicles believed to have been used to transport the stolen meat. Checks revealed the shotgun was legally owned by one of the suspects. Investigations are ongoing under the Arms Act 1960, Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and Section 379 of the Penal Code. All suspects have been remanded. Maizura advised the public to install CCTV, ensure proper lighting in pens and conduct routine patrols to prevent theft. Licensed firearm owners were also reminded to store their weapons safely and according to legal procedures.
