Supreme Court on Stray Dogs Live Updates: Three-judge bench to review Delhi-NCR stray dog order today
The case will now be taken up by Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria. This comes three days after a two-judge bench ordered authorities to remove all stray dogs to shelters and fixed its next hearing for four weeks later.
However, the order did not sit well with many including animal lovers in Delhi NCR, it drew immediate criticism from politicians, public figures, animal rights groups who argued that longer-term, scientific approaches such as sterilisation, vaccination and community care, are more humane and effective.
On August 11, a top court bench comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan had directed authorities to round up stray dogs, starting with 5,000 in six to eight weeks. It said that no captured dogs should be released back onto the streets under any circumstances.
The court further recorded that 'The stray dogs shall be captured, sterilized, dewormed and immunized as required by Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023,' according to the detailed order uploaded on the Supreme Court website on Wednesday.
Protests, detentions in Delhi after Stray dogs judgement
On the night of the order, several dog lovers, animal rights activists and other protesters were detained near India Gate, Delhi, while demonstrating against the 'remove all strays' directive.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Varun Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi also flagged concerns. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India termed the order 'impractical, illogical, and illegal.'
Rahul posted on X: 'Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted and strip us of compassion.. These voiceless souls are not 'problems' to be erased. Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination and community care can keep streets safe — without cruelty… We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand.'

Mahadevan, Judge, Supreme Court of India, on Saturday. In his inaugural address at 40th convocation of VIT at its campus here, Justice Mr. Mahadevan said that strong moral character helps to make consistent correct choices in the trials and testing of life. It helps a person to grow as leaders of tomorrow to guide fellow citizens of the country. 'Righteous character provides the foundation of spiritual strength which will lead to success in your entire life. Students should have faith in themselves to face challenges in life,' he said. The Judge emphasised on the importance of reading among students as it is the gateway to the world of knowledge. Students should deepen and broaden their knowledge in every field to become more stronger in human values, he said. In his presidential address, G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor, VIT, said that at present, parents especially from the middle and lower class were finding it challenging to pay fees of their children especially for higher studies in private universities. In this regard, the government should share at least a portion of fees paid by parents as it will encourage more students from rural areas to pursue higher education. 'Tamil Nadu tops in allocating the highest share of its budget allocation for education in the country with 21% of its budget in 2025-26. SPCSS-TN urges CM to hold consultation for better SEP
The State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to hold direct consultation with members of the High Level Committee, educationists and other forums to strengthen the State Education Policy (SEP). In a letter to the Chief Minister, general secretary, SPCSS - TN P. B. Prince Gajendra Babu said, 'The non-availability of the Report of the High Level Committee in the public domain and the announcement of the policy without placing the draft for discussion, denied the democratic space for people to negotiate on certain proposals in the policy.' The letter further added that the State Policy should be grounded on the premises of the Constitution of India. 'The Policy should set the curricular goals. The policy should ensure that at the completion of basic education in schools, the student should have a clear vision that caste is a discriminatory social practice, and it is against the Constitution of India,' it added. Pointing out that the concept of Model Schools, VETRI Schools and involvement of volunteers in curricular activities are against the concept of Samacheer Kalvi Policy and the principles of Social Justice, he said that a policy cannot sustain inequalities. The letter also pointed out that permanent teaching and non-teaching staff are a must for continuous formative assessment and that budgetary allocations must be made instead of philanthropic contributions.
