It's a collaboration tailor-made for a poolside summer: British men's beachwear specialist Orlebar Brown and luxury Southern California resort VEA Newport Beach (billed as 'Newport's social sanctuary').
The timely coming together coincides with Chanel -owned Orlebar Brown opening a store on Fashion Island in Orange County California, and the pair have hosted a pop-up store within VEA's poolside cabana that also offered 'a fleet of on-site amenities' including an in-room shopping concierge, a signature cocktail, and certificates to shop at the brand-new flagship across the street from the resort'.
Every Saturday in June, Orlebar Brown has been activating the cabana at VEA's pool with custom upholsteries, branded pool accessories, and a sampling of the brand's latest collection.
In every VEA room, guests can find hanger tags that activate a personal shopping concierge able to deliver product from the Fashion Island store, located steps away from the resort while guests staying in VEA suites throughout the month will receive a $250 Orlebar Brown gift certificate.
'VEA provides the perfect backdrop for a luxury fashion experience,' said Debbie Snavely, GM of VEA Newport Beach Marriott.
'Orlebar Brown embodies the essence of our guests — elegant yet approachable, relaxed yet polished.'

Retirees with foreign pension no longer eligible for French citizenship, says Interior Ministry

Following several recent reports from retirees who were denied French citizenship on the basis that their foreign pensions did not meet the requirements to have French income, The Local has been urgently seeking clarity from the Interior Ministry. On Wednesday a ministry spokesperson confirmed that the rules have indeed changed and applicants, including retirees, with "income primarily coming from abroad" no longer qualify for French nationality based on residency ( décret ). The spokesperson wrote: "There was previously a measure of goodwill for people over the age of 65 whose income came mainly from abroad that allowed foreigners to obtain French nationality. "The May 2025 circulaire (memo) removes this tolerance, specifying that, with only a few exceptions, applications from applicants whose income primarily comes from abroad will be refused. Advertisement "It does not matter whether the applicant is retired or still working." The ministry's statement echoes the recent response of the Deux-Sèvres préfecture, which stated that the "rules changed" after May 2nd, when the circulaire was sent out. Since May, The Local has received several reports from retirees being denied French nationality, despite meeting all other requirements, such as language level and minimum time spent living in France. In some cases, retirees had demonstrated strong community ties over decades of life in France, but they were still denied on the basis that they did not have sufficient French income. Crucially, these changes are being applied to people who made their applications months or sometimes years ago. This is contrary to full legal changes - such as the revised standards for French language levels - which can only be applied to new applications . READ MORE: 'Doesn't seem fair' - British pensioners speak out over apparent change to French citizenship rules Although it has always been the case that people applying for citizenship through residency must show French income, previously préfectures had made exceptions for people who had retired to France, looking instead at the overall picture of whether the "centre of their economic interests" is in France - for example they had bought a home here. There are numerous examples of retirees successfully gaining citizenship prior to 2025, and the Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed that préfectures had previously been able to apply a 'relaxation' of the requirements when it came to retirees. Will there be any exceptions? The spokesperson specified that there would be "an exception for retirement pensions drawn from an activity carried out in an international organisation." For instance, a person who worked for the United Nations might qualify for this exemption. She also noted that the interior ministry does not have a set list of exemptions, and each application is still considered based on its own merits. "This will be at the discretion of the administration, the person examining the application, or the préfet," the spokesperson clarified to The Local. "If a person shows they are very engaged in the community, perhaps there could be an exception," she added. Advertisement Each application is still decided on its own merits, and previously some préfectures have proved stricter than others when it comes to applying the letter of the law. What did the circulaire say exactly? A circulaire is a memo sent out by a government minister - it cannot change the law, but it can offer 'clarification' for how préfecture staff ought to interpret it when processing citizenship applications. In the third section of the circulaire - titled 'the autonomy of the applicant' - Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau instructed staff on what to consider regarding l'insertion professionnelle (professional integration) and le niveau et l'origine des revenues (the amount and origin of income). Retailleau wrote: "You will also, with some exceptions, reject applicants whose income comes mainly from abroad, as this shows they have not completely transferred the centre of their interests to France." Retailleau did not reference any exceptions for retirees, though he did remind préfecture employees not to reject applications with 'insufficient income' if the applicant is ill or has a disability. Advertisement The interior minister also explained that this requirement is to demonstrate 'integration' to France and a long-term commitment to the country. He also wrote: "The applicant's autonomy must be based on proven and sustainable professional integration that provides them with stable and sufficient resources. "This not only demonstrates the stability of their settlement in France, but is also an essential element of their integration into the national community." Is there any hope for a change in the future? Several of the retirees who told The Local they were rejected have appealed, which means they may still have a chance of gaining nationality, depending on the interpretation of the administrative court of Nantes. There is also a possibility that a future interior minister could send out a circulaire changing this approach, or that complaints making their way through the courts could force the ministry to change its stance toward retirees. Shearer accuses Isak of pouring 'flames on fire' of Newcastle row

The Sweden international, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured for Newcastle in pre-season or their opening game of the campaign, a goalless draw away at Aston Villa last Saturday. Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid ($149 million) rejected for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle holding out for a British transfer record fee of up to £150 million. Isak released a statement on Tuesday after deciding not to appear at the Professional Footballers' Association awards event despite being selected in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time," said Isak, with the 25-year-old adding: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue." But former Newcastle captain and manager Shearer, speaking to Betfair, labelled the current situation an "absolute mess" as he accused Isak's agent, Vlado Lemic, of failing his client. "If I was him, I'd get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that six-year deal and there's no get out clause," Shearer said. "I mean, it's ridiculous. And to take anyone's word in football... it's nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I'll be able to get out at the end of the season'. Really? I mean, come on." 'Wrong way' The ex-England striker added: "I've always said there are two sides to every story, but my feelings are exactly the same: he's gone about it in the wrong way. "I just think even releasing this statement last night has thrown flames onto the fire, which he didn't need to do... It doesn't benefit anyone." According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for Newcastle to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. Newcastle issued a statement late Tuesday saying while they were saddened by Isak's comments, they could yet welcome him back into the squad. "No commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer," said the statement. "We want to keep our best players... Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this year that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy. Liverpool have already spent around £300 million overhauling a squad that romped to the Premier League title last season. But they have also recouped over £200 million in sales and are still in the market for attacking options after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and tragic death of Diogo Jota. Any deal is unlikely to be done before the two clubs face off in their next Premier League game on Monday at St James' Park.

Topshop's first UK wholesale partner revealed -- it's Liberty

Topshop doesn't seem to have put a foot wrong as it's hit the comeback trail this year and following its headline-grabbing runway show at the weekend we now know the name of its first UK wholesale partner. It's high-end London department store Liberty. Not that the company released this news officially at first. Instead, an Instagram post shows a rail of Topshop clothing being wheeled along with a glimpse of a mock- Tudor building and a W1 postcode in the background. This could be no other store than Liberty, just off London's Regent Street. The company later confirmed the link-up with more information. The women's and men's collections launch there on 28 August with the companies saying that for Liberty, 'it reinforces a commitment to championing creativity, cultural relevance and emerging talent. For Topshop and Topman, it's a dynamic return to the high street — offering a new space for discovery, connection and style'. 'Through Topshop and Topman, we want to bring the best of fashion to everyone,' said Topshop MD Michelle Wilson. 'Liberty [is] a brand that shares our passion for creativity, nurturing talent and pushing boundaries. This launch is about reconnecting with our community in real life, and we're excited to kick things off with a full Liberty atrium takeover.' Meanwhile Liberty's buying and merchandising director, Lydia King, said: 'We've always been about discovery — curating the most exciting talent and ideas under one roof. Partnering with Topshop and Topman brings a new layer to that experience: it's a meeting point of two iconic British names, both with deep roots in London style, a stone's throw from Oxford Street. This residency celebrates the city's creativity and energy, offering our customers something unexpected. Which we love to do.' As well as the clothes, we're told 'the launch will feature immersive visualmoments throughout the Liberty atrium, celebrating the creative spirit and future-facing energy of both brands'. Being stocked in a prestige location like Liberty underlines Topshop's close London connections that are being emphasised in its relaunch. But it also underlines how much kudos the brand still has and how well the Topshop (and not forgetting Topman) comebacks are being managed by the team at ASOS. After all, Topshop has always been essentially a mass-market fashion brand (albeit a trend-led one) and its pricing means it still is, while the fashion labels available at Liberty are in a much higher price bracket. The company has also linked up with some strong international stockists including Irish department stores McElhinneys and Shaws, Printemps in France and Denmark's Magasin du Nord. As we said, it hasn't put a foot wrong so far from teaser campaigns to one-day pop-ups, a relaunched webstore, a Cara Delevingne collab and a Traflgar Square runway show. The hardest task comes next though — selling a large number of clothes. It's unclear how much information we'll get on how it's going on this front with the next set of ASOS results (due in mid-October) as the company now holds only a minority stake after selling control to Heartland, the investment vehicle of Bestseller 's owner. But with ASOS still managing the brand, fingers crossed it will be prepared to share what it must hope will be good news.
