CAA Accuses Range Media Partners of Stealing Trade Secrets in Agency Battle
CAA first sued Range last fall, claiming the firm was built on deceit and betrayal. In an amended complaint filed Monday, the agency says it has since uncovered 'documents, photographs, and video footage' through discovery that 'reveal the depth of Range's dishonesty.'

Mick Sullivan, who left CAA to help form Range, is accused in the suit of emailing himself client 'rundowns,' which detailed every meeting the clients had taken and projects they were tracking. At least one of those clients immediately left CAA when Range formed.
Sullivan is also accused of emailing himself hundreds of pages of meeting notes, which detailed information on hundreds of projects and potential projects that had been gathered for CAA clients. Sullivan also allegedly pressured a CAA assistant to send him additional information about clients, including lists totaling nearly 200 scripts that had been sent to them.
The suit alleges that other Range employees also stole confidential information, including by pressuring CAA employees who remained at the company. Paige Wandling, an assistant at CAA who left to become a manager at Range, is accused of using a CAA 'mole' to obtain hundreds of confidential documents.
'Over a course of weeks, Wandling requested, and Empoyee-1 provided, CAA's confidential information dozens of times,' the suit alleges. 'The stolen information included, by way of example, internal CAA emails, extensive information about film and TV opportunities for talent, scripts, industry contacts, CAA memos, CAA grids, and information on CAA meetings and business initiatives.'
According to the complaint, Wandling offered to pay the CAA mole for this information, and in fact did so.
The complaint argues that CAA's trade secrets are essential to making the company — and the industry — run. Agents gather information from studios, producers, directors and writers, and put it into a database so it can be sorted and shared internally. Agents also collect sensitive information from clients, including their financial information, career goals and so on.
'This client confidential information is immeasurably valuable to competitors who could use it to understand the particular nuanced needs, motivations, and negotiating tactics of CAA's clients,' the complaint states.
CAA's initial lawsuit, filed last fall, accused Range of 'unfair competition,' arguing that it had devised a scheme to get around California's talent agency law by claiming to be a management firm.
Range has moved to throw out that suit, arguing it was legally defective. The amended lawsuit retains the initial claims while adding accusations of theft of trade secrets and unauthorized computer access.

Legendary Long Island law firm Sullivan-Papain turns 100
They've pleased the court. A Long Island law firm that changed the world using out-of-the-box thinking on everything from smoking to cars to beer at baseball games is celebrating centenarian status this year. 'Everything that you have grown up with and have taken for granted is because of what's happened in this firm over the last 100 years,' New York State Supreme Court Justice Christopher McGrath told The Post of firm Sullivan-Papain, which has recovered north of $2 billion in settlements in the past decade alone. 4 Sullivan-Papain partners Thomas McManus, Eleni Coffinas, John Nash, Nick Papain (back row left to right) and Bob Sullivan (seated) at the law firm's office in Garden City. Clark The judge cut his teeth with the Garden City-based practice as a 23-year-old under the tutelage of its late 5'2″ skinny founder, Harry Lipsig, who was a giant in the legal world 50-something years ago. 'He was just different. He's a genius — and yet, we'll call him a little quirky at the same time,' McGrath said. 'One time, my job was to meet him at his apartment at seven in the morning. The train got me in late at 7:05, and he said, 'Good afternoon.' ' Lipsig's high standards weren't without reason. He used a mix of sheer brilliance and common sense to change how the world operated; perhaps most notably, starting with how stadiums sold beer 80 years ago, after a man at a New York Giants baseball game got belted in the head with a glass bottle at the old Polo Grounds. 4 Harry Lipsig was a founding partner of the 100-year-old firm. During the three-day trial, Lipsig, who passed away in 1989 at age 89, brought a mysterious handheld paper bag into court with him each day and left it sealed on the table. Clark On a case-by-case basis The novel way of thinking that Lipsig was known for — he once won a shark-bite case by proving the victim's hotel wasn't dumping its garbage far enough at sea and drew in the predators — has been passed down generation to generation. New York state recruited Sullivan-Papain in its lawsuit against smoking companies in the late 1990s, which yielded an end to cigarette ads and $25 billion in recovery locally. 'The genius was that we didn't represent the smokers, we represented the nonsmokers,' Sullivan said. 'Your taxes, what you pay for Medicare, Medicaid, for all these people who got sick and were dying of cancer, went through the roof. That was the key point.' 4 Partner Nick Papain was involved in a case that helped make cars safer. Dennis A. Clark Ironically, most of the firm's team on the case was hooked on nicotine. 'Every hour, we would take a 10-minute break so the lawyers could go out and smoke,' said partner Nicholas Papain, a lawyer who led to changes in how cars are built. He was involved in several cases of people who got into accidents by unintentionally hitting the gas rather than the brake when first getting into their cars. Ultimately, the high-volume litigation led to automakers keeping gearshifts locked unless a driver's foot was on the brake. The firm has also branched out into medical malpractice and represented the FDNY for four decades, with partner Eleni Coffinas saying cancer patients often find emotional strength in court victories. Sullivan-Papain has done an estimated $40 million in pro bono work for the families of first responders on 9/11, too. 'I think it speaks to that firm culture, philosophy, that is a big reason why it has been around for 100 years,' said managing partner TJ McManus, who added that it is common for new workers to hear of Lipsig's legend during their first week on the job. 'I think he set certain parameters and a legacy that is followed all the way through to today.'

'It Ends With Us' editor complained 'SMH' about Blake Lively's approval rights for sex scenes, unsealed texts show
As they raced to complete the blockbuster movie "It Ends With Us," one editor told another that he was shaking his head over Blake Lively's final-cut approval for her character's sex scenes. "SMH," editor Robb Sullivan told co-editor Oona Flaherty, according to a text chain unsealed Friday as part of Lively's federal sexual-harassment lawsuit against costar and director Justin Baldoni. In the chain, Sullivan is remarking on Lively having final approval for not only her own sex scenes in the movie, but those of the young actor playing her character's teenage self in flashbacks. The brief text chain, dated four months before the film's 2024 release, hints at the tension surrounding Lively's demand for control over the most sensitive scenes. It begins with Sullivan and Flaherty celebrating winning a PG-13 rating. "Woot!" Flaherty texts, to which Sullivan responds, "Woo hoo," and "I'll drink to that! Of course, I was planning on drinking anyways…. :)" Sullivan is not a party to the lawsuit; he did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Lively's 163-page lawsuit accuses Baldoni of sexual harassment, retaliation, and attempting to damage her reputation and her lifestyle businesses by orchestrating a surreptitious social media attack campaign. Baldoni has denied the allegations, including in a now-dismissed $400 million countersuit that alleged she engaged in a "hostile takeover" of the production. Lively's lawsuit is being aggressively litigated against by Baldoni and his co-defendant production company Wayfarer Studios. In mid-July, the judge ordered Lively to turn over three years of her business income records to Baldoni. Lively's lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial on March 9 in federal court in Manhattan. The text chain released Friday had originally been turned over to Lively's legal team by Baldoni in response to one of her subpoenas, according to legal filings. Dated April 18, 2024, it now remains redacted to hide the contact information of the participants. They include a "J B," who does not comment on the exchange, and does not appear to include Lively, who is referred to as "Blake." "Honestly, it's all about control," a participant identified as "Henny Grace" writes at one point in the chain. The text chain was originally uploaded to the lawsuit's case file by Lively's team as a sealed exhibit addressed to US District Judge Lewis Liman, the Manhattan judge handling the case. It was part of Lively's efforts to serve Sullivan with a subpoena. Lively's process server had been unable to serve Sullivan in person after five visits to his California address in mid-July, according to a July 28 decision signed by Liman. "The process server attempted to serve Sullivan both during the day and after work hours but did not receive an answer, despite lights and television being on in the residence," Liman wrote in allowing the process server to tack a copy of Lively's subpoena to Sullivan's door. Lively's attempts to serve subpoenas have been the subject of heated litigation in the last month. On July 26, Liman wrote that Lively has withdrawn her subpoenas to Google and X seeking the account information of five content creators who had been critical of her role in the lawsuit. The five content creators had all filed motions to quash Lively's subpoenas.

After nearly six decades, Sunset Golf will close up shop in South Park, "It's emotional."
The sun is setting on a mini golf spot and driving range that's been a part of the community in South Park for nearly six decades. Sunset Golf will close in August. August 10 is the last day for mini golf. August 17 is the final day for the driving ranges. The Scandrol family, which owns the property, has sold it – so it can be turned into a development for people 55 and older. "It's emotional, I have to say," owner Dave Scandrol said. A lot has evolved here in the decades since it opened in 1959. Dave took it over around 1990 from his parents. "We have a lot of gadgets that we've invented and made over the years," Dave Scandrol said. There are grinches, alligators, bowling pins all over the mini-golf course. "They love the animation," Roy Scandrol, Dave's brother, said. A decent amount of the animatronics let out water as well. "The little children are thrilled with the water – they love getting soaked," Roy Scandrol said. The driving ranges have also changed – along with how they're taken care of. "We used to cut the whole field out there – which is about 30 acres – with a 32-inch-long mower," Roy Scandrol said. People from near and far made it a point to come down. The Scandrols say people have come from the Midwest and the West Coast. They even say McDonald's and Sony have come to film promos. This new chapter will be a drastic change from what's been on these grounds before. "I mean -- it's my life – I've been here all my life," Dave Scandrol said.
