78-year-old Beverly Fletcher was found dead, having suffered stab wounds and possibly blunt force trauma
Vivian Stewart Nation, 80, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death
The alleged incident occurred in the couple's apartment in a Maryland retirement communityAn 80-year-old Maryland man was arrested and charged with murdering his wife with a hammer at their retirement community.
Beverly Fletcher, 78, was found dead with stab wounds and possible blunt force trauma inside her apartment at Leisure World, a retirement community in Maryland, the Montgomery County Police Department said in a news release.
Her husband, Vivian Stewart Nation, was also located in the apartment and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
According to charging documents reported by WTOP, WUSA and DC News Now, police said they found a bloody hammer and screwdriver at the scene.
The reported documents alleged that Nation spoke to investigators and said that he and his wife had gotten in a fight over his doctor — which turned physical.
The documents further allege that Fletcher fell on the ground and that Nation said he pushed the hammer against her throat.
Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy said, according to WUSA, that the couple had been married for 13 years."I'm sure it's a tough situation for both of these families," McCarthy said. "We're dealing with a gentleman who's been dealing with some cognitive challenges in recent years and this happens."
It was not immediately clear if Nation has entered a plea. He is being represented by a public defender and undertook a cognitive evaluation this week.
"This case is an obvious tragedy for all involved," public defender Sean Mukherjee said according to WUSA. "Mr. Nation has lived 80 years without any record of serious or violent crimes; something more is clearly going on here."

Donald Trump Slams Backers Who Continue To Talk About 'Jeffrey Epstein Hoax': 'I Don't Want Their Support Anymore!'

Donald Trump again expressed his irritation over a split in his MAGA base over his administration's contention that there's no there there when it comes to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump wrote that the Epstein story has been orchestrated by Democrats. But figures in his administration, like FBI Director Kash Patel, Vice President JD Vance and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino had pushed conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein before taking their administration posts. More from Deadline Senate Votes To Advance Trump's Effort To Rescind Funding For PBS, NPR And Public Media 'Trump's Power & The Rule Of Law': Michael Kirk On His Latest 'Frontline' About POTUS' Power Play And Why It Might Lead To Supreme Court Showdown Donald Trump's DOJ Again Seeks To Remove Three Board Members From Corporation For Public Broadcasting Trump wrote on Truth Social, 'The Radical Left Democrats have hit pay dirt, again! Just like with the FAKE and fully discredited Steele Dossier, the lying 51 'Intelligence' Agents, the Laptop from Hell, which the Dems swore had come from Russia (No, it came from Hunter Biden's bathroom!), and even the Russia, Russia, Russia Scam itself, a totally fake and made up story used in order to hide Crooked Hillary Clinton's big loss in the 2016 Presidential Election, these Scams and Hoaxes are all the Democrats are good at – It's all they have – They are no good at governing, no good at policy, and no good at picking winning candidates. Also, unlike Republicans, they stick together like glue. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker. They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years. I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore! Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' Trump has been trying to tamp down the Epstein talk since there has been a backlash among some of his most prominent allies over how the administration has handled the investigation. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi was asked on Fox news about a supposed Epstein client list. 'It's sitting on my desk right now to review,' Bondi said then. Last week, Bondi said that she meant that she had the Esptein file to review, while the Justice Department has said that there was no evidence that there was a client list. Patel wrote on X on Saturday, 'The conspiracy theories just aren't true, never have been. It's an honor to serve the President of the United States @realDonaldTrump — and I'll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me.' On podcaster Benny Johnson's show in 2023, Patel suggested that the FBI was withholding the client list because it contained the names of prominent figures. 'Put on your big boy pants and let us know who the pedophiles are,' Patel shouted at congressional Republicans. Figures like Megyn Kelly, who backed Trump last year, have continued to call on greater transparency from the administration. Joe Rogan, who also supported Trump, has mocked the administration's response. Trader Joe's are being targeted by ‘extreme' animal rights groups in California - with protestors allegedly posing as employees

Shoppers at Trader Joe's in California have been sharing the aisles with animal rights activists, and it doesn't appear that's going change anytime soon. Over the past few months, Direct Action Everywhere - a Berkeley-headquartered group - has been holding demonstrations inside Trader Joe's stores across the state. As the group's name suggests, their tactics include disrupting the daily operations of targeted companies. At Trader Joe's, that has taken the form of marching into the stores with megaphones, screaming profanities at customers, gluing themselves to surfaces, and using signs and videos. According to SFGATE, the group is protesting Trader Joe's poultry products, alleging its supplier — Perdue subsidiary Petaluma Poultry — is keeping birds in inhumane conditions. Trader Joe's has served the group a cease-and-desist letter, according to a July 3 complaint in Alameda County courts. Trader Joe's legal representatives believe the group will ignore the cease and desist and will continue to enter its stores and disrupt customers, the documents state. A group of animal rights activists called Direct Action Everywhere has been holding disruptive protests inside California Trader Joe's locations (Getty Images) The complaint notes that Direct Action Everywhere has been targeting Trader Joe's locations for years, but the group's incursions have only recently become more aggressive and more frequent. It describes the group as using signs, skits, and videos, and alleges that more aggressive tactics are causing potential fights. 'They have threatened and berated Trader Joe's customers and Crew Members, physically engaged with Trader Joe's customers, removed items from customers' shopping baskets, and posed as authorized representatives of Trader Joe's,' the complaint says. During a disruption on July 2 at a Pasadena Trader Joe's, one woman glued herself to the meat aisle. At the same time, another protester glued herself to the front desk at the grocery chain's corporate headquarters in Monrovia. Both women were arrested and charged with court dates set for August, according to SFGATE. Days before the July 2 event, Direct Action Everywhere members protested at a number of Trader Joe's locations across California. The complaint alleges that Trader Joe's employees asked the group to stop filming and to leave, but they refused. On June 28, the group stormed a San Diego Trader Joe's and some members allegedly got into a shouting match with a customer, according to the complaint. The lawsuit says that "at least a dozen customers complaint to Crew members about how shaken they were and how some of them were harassed verbally and felt threatened." The Independent has contacted Trader Joe's, Petaluma Poultry, and Direct Action Everywhere for comment. The group says it plans to continue its protests until Trader Joe's changes its poultry supplier. 'I've seen firsthand the cruelty at Perdue's Petaluma Poultry—chickens sick, injured, crammed into filthy crates, left to suffer in agony,' Carla Cabral, a Direct Action Everywhere member named in the complaint, said in a news release. 'We brought this to Trader Joe's, but instead of listening, they blocked us, refused all dialogue, and hired powerful attorneys to try to shut us up.'

What to know about the killings of an 'American Idol' music supervisor and her husband in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police officers conducting a welfare check at a home on Monday discovered two bodies inside with gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Robin Kaye, a longtime music supervisor for 'American Idol,' and her husband, Thomas Deluca. A day later, police arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the killings. Here's what to know about the case. Welfare check Officials said someone who hadn't heard from Kaye and Deluca in several days requested that police check out their residence in the Encino neighborhood, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Officers entered the house Monday afternoon and found a man and woman shot to death. Homicide detectives were called. The victims were identified on Tuesday as Kaye and Deluca, both 70. The couple owned their home in the upscale suburb of the San Fernando Valley, according to public records. Suspect arrested Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested 'without incident' Tuesday afternoon, police said in a statement. Investigators believe Boodarian was burglarizing the home several days earlier while the couple was away. Police had been called to the residence on July 10 but found no signs of trouble or forced entry. Now, detectives suspect that Boodarian managed to get into the house through an unlocked door and was surprised by Kaye and Deluca. 'The victims returned home while the suspect was inside their residence, and a confrontation ensued, which resulted in the suspect taking their lives,' the police statement says. 'The victims succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, and the suspect fled from the residence on foot.' Officers interviewed friends and family, reviewed numerous surveillance videos, and recovered evidence of a homicide at scene, officials said. Boodarian had not yet been assigned a public defender as of Tuesday evening and could not be reached for comment. A television veteran Kaye had been with 'American Idol,' the hit singing competition TV series, for more than 15 years. She had also worked in the music departments of several other productions such as 'The Singing Bee,' 'Hollywood Game Night,' 'Lip Sync Battle,' and several Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. 'Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her,' an 'American Idol' spokesperson said in a statement. 'Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.'
