Over the past few months, leaks showing a redesigned iPhone 17 Pro pair and an uber-slim iPhone 17 Air have occupied social media. But it seems the upcoming Apple flagships will serve a few other niceties that will appeal to camera fans. According to a Macrumors report, which cites an unnamed source, the iPhone 17 Pro will come with an upgraded 8x optical zoom camera. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro pair is limited to 5x optical zoom output. Apple is stepping up Looking over at the competition, Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra and Google Pixel 9 Pro peak at 5x optical zoom output. Stepping into the hypercompetitive Asian markets, Oppo's Find X8 Ultra goes up to 6x optical zoom, and the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra reaches the 9.4x optical zoom figure. 'The lens can apparently move, allowing for continuous optical zoom at various focal lengths,' adds the report. To recall, all the leaks point at a massive camera bump at the back of the iPhone 17 Pro, so it's plausible that Apple is indeed eyeing a major upgrade for the imaging hardware. Recommended Videos Assuming the rumor turns out to be true, the iPhone 17 Pro will emerge as one of the best smartphones out there for long-range photo and video capture, at least going by the on-paper hardware. Whether Apple upgrades the tetraprism design for the next-gen telephoto camera system remains a mystery. A true camera powerhouse, at last Older leaks are also predicting a triple 48-megapixel camera layout for the iPhone 17 Pro, with support for 8K video capture in tow. We are also hearing some chatter about a mechanical aperture feature that will offer users more granular control over photo capture. The camera app will reportedly allow simultaneous capture by the front and rear snappers, a solution that is tailor-made for vlogging. This facility, however, isn't exactly a groundbreaking innovation, as the likes of Samsung have offered it for years on the Galaxy smartphones. The latest Apple leak also claims that Apple will release a new camera app with the iPhone 17 Pro, one that will focus on Pro-grade features and deeper controls. So far, the likes of Halide and Kino have remained a favorite in the 'mobigrapher' community, so it would be interesting to see what Apple has to offer in terms of standout capabilities.

iPhone 17 just might launch the second week of September
Someone just calculated a potential drop date for the iPhone 17 — and it could be sooner than many of us thought. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, the long-awaited new iPhones that allegedly could come in black and have a potentially extensive battery life, doesn't have a set release date. We don't know many of the specs, including price, hardware, and colors, but we have gotten plenty of exciting leaks. One leak reported by Mac Rumors from a leaker known as Majin Bu claims that the iPhone 17 Air could come in the MacBook Air's new Sky Blue finish. The newest piece of iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air rumors comes not from a leak, but from some well-calculated math. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman wrote in the newsletter Power On that we might get the new iPhone specs — and the opportunity to buy them — the week of September 8. Gurman noted that Apple tends to launch its new iPhones the week after Labor Day. This year, that falls on September 1, so we'll probably see the launch the week of September 8. And that tracks with its history — in the last decade, nine of the 10 Apple events fell on the second week of September, according to MacRumors. The only year that breaks the pattern is 2000, when the event was moved due to the pandemic. Apple never schedules events on Fridays, Gurman argues, and will likely avoid a show on September 11. That leaves three days open for its iPhone event: September 8, a Monday; September 9, a Tuesday; or September 10, a Wednesday. "It could be that Monday (the 8th), though I suspect the 9th or 10th is probably more likely,' Gurman wrote, according to PC Mag. Apple Suddenly Releases New iOS 26 Public Beta For iPhone 11 Users
Apple's latest software release left out three iPhones when it happened this week — and it took a day for this problem to be resolved. Here's what happened. Apple releases iOS 26 public beta for iPhone 11. Apple released the first public beta version of iOS 26, the software which will go on general release in September on plenty of iPhones, including current models like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and this fall's upcoming iPhone 17 series. The compatibility for the new software stretches all the way back to the iPhone 11, first released in late 2020. Or it should have done, but three phones were left out of the release: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. This is the full list of compatible phones. As spotted by MacRumors commenting on Friday, 'Apple did not seed the iPhone 11 version of the iOS 26 public beta yesterday, but it's out now. The update has a build number of 23A5297n, which is different from the 23A5297m public beta that other testers received,' it reported. The build number is almost the same, suggesting there's very little difference between the two, but whatever the changes, they're there to suit the 2020 iPhones. It seems there was an issue for those models in the beta, which has now been fixed. 'Fixed: On iPhone 11, if you have organized apps into folders on your Home Screen, you might only see the leftmost column of the grid of apps when opening a folder. The other two columns in the folder do not display the app icons, preventing users from launching those apps,' Apple said. This is one of those small-but-highly-irritating problems, so Apple did the right thing, I'd suggest, to hold off releasing it. For this to be the blemish on iPhone 11 users' first encounter with iOS 26 would have been a shame. A new developer beta has also been released so that developers using iPhone 11 handsets can see the benefit, too. Although the first public beta has seemed pretty solid, it's a reminder that there can be issues, and that it's worth not installing iOS 26 on your daily driver just yet, but rather put its all-new design, extra features and more to the test on a secondary device instead.
