Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthew Vaughn launch UR•Marv film studio with action movie series in development

Express Tribune10-04-2025

Cristiano Ronaldo and director Matthew Vaughn have launched UR•Marv, a new independent film studio, according to Variety. The venture aims to merge innovative filmmaking technology with a respect for cinematic tradition, blending Ronaldo's global brand with Vaughn's flair for action storytelling.
The pair has already completed two action films, with a third in development — all part of an interconnected series they financed and produced through UR•Marv. Details about the first installment are expected to be announced soon.
'This is an exciting chapter for me, as I look ahead to new ventures in business,' Ronaldo said of the partnership.
Vaughn, known for directing films like Layer Cake, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, praised Ronaldo's storytelling legacy. 'Cristiano has created stories on the pitch that I could never have written, and I look forward to creating inspiring movies with him – he's a real-life superhero,' he said.
UR•Marv marks another step in Ronaldo's growing media portfolio. In 2023, he became a key investor in Medialivre, a major Portuguese media group. In 2024, he launched a YouTube channel, 'UR Cristiano,' offering fans personal insights and exclusive content.
Vaughn, meanwhile, continues to expand his footprint in entertainment. He directed the 2024 spy thriller Argylle, starring Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard, and has two more Kingsman films in development.

Kit Connor eyed for lead role in Alex Garland's Elden Ring movie adaptation

British actor Kit Connor may soon reunite with director Alex Garland for a major role in the live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring, the acclaimed video game franchise from FromSoftware. According to Variety, Garland is eyeing Connor—his star from A24's Warfare—for a lead role in the upcoming film, although no formal offer has been made yet. Garland was recently confirmed to write and direct the adaptation, which is being produced by A24 in partnership with Bandai Namco. The story, drawn from the mythos co-created by George R. R. Martin—renowned for A Song of Ice and Fire, the basis for HBO's Game of Thrones—will bring the game's dark fantasy world to the big screen. Producers include Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Vince Gerardis, and Martin himself. Released in 2022, Elden Ring became a global phenomenon, shipping over 30 million units. It earned multiple Game Awards, including Game of the Year. A new spinoff, Elden Ring: Nightreign, is set for release on May 30, followed by Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. Connor rose to international fame as Nick Nelson in Netflix's Heartstopper, which will conclude with a movie this summer. He recently starred in Warfare, co-directed by Garland and Ray Mendoza, based on real military experiences. Speaking about Garland, Connor told Variety earlier this year, 'Working with Alex is creatively fulfilling—he brings out your best.' While casting remains unofficial, speculation has already sparked buzz among fans online, many praising the possible casting as a 'perfect fit' for the game's tone and lore. Industry watchers are now keenly watching for confirmation in the coming weeks.

Dept Q Netflix series: Will there be a season 2? Cast has its say, including Matthew Goode

Netflix's crime drama Dept. Q, set in Edinburgh and starring Matthew Goode as detective Carl Morck, has yet to be confirmed for a second season, but the cast is already pushing for its return. Dept. Q follows Morck, who returns to work after a traumatic attack to lead a new cold case unit in the basement of Edinburgh police station. Alongside Salim, a Syrian police officer played by Alexej Manvelov, Morck investigates the disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard, played by Chloe Pirrie. The first season, released on 29 May, consists of nine episodes and has received largely positive reviews. The Guardian praised the show as "a grimy, gothic treat," while Variety described it as "an emotionally fraught crime thriller that never lets up." Netflix has not officially renewed the series, and a spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. The streaming service is likely monitoring viewership numbers before making a decision on a second season. Despite this, lead actor Matthew Goode expressed enthusiasm for continuing the series. In a recent interview, he stated that he had urged the director and writer to produce a second season, suggesting it could include more intense fight scenes. Co-star Chloe Pirrie also supported the idea, noting, "These characters are such fun to be with," and expressing hope to see the team tackle more cases together. The series is adapted from the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, whose Dept. Q series includes ten books, offering Netflix ample material should the show be renewed. While the first six novels have been adapted into Danish films, the remaining four are expected to be released between 2026 and 2032. Dept. Q is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Al-Nassr working on renewing Ronaldo deal, says club chief

RIYADH: Al-Nassr are negotiating with Cristiano Ronaldo over a contract extension but face competition from a host of clubs eager to sign the five-times Ballon d'Or winner, the Saudi side's sporting director Fernando Hierro said on Thursday. Speculation over the 40-year-old Portuguese forward's future intensified after Al-Nassr's season-ending match at Al-Fateh on Monday, with Ronaldo posting on social media: 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.' 'Ronaldo's contract with Al-Nassr runs until June 30. We will work to renew his contract so he can continue with us, and there are many clubs interested in signing him,' Hierro told a news conference. Despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify for the Club World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last week that discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the June 14-July 13 tournament in the United States. FIFA has created a special transfer window for clubs to sign players for the event, and while Wydad Casablanca had been linked with a move for Ronaldo a source close to the Moroccan side told Reuters last week they were not in talks to sign him. Cristiano Ronaldo tops Forbes' list of highest-paid athletes for third year in a row Ronaldo finished as the top scorer in back-to-back Saudi Pro League seasons and Hierro described him as a trailblazer for Saudi soccer. 'Ronaldo's presence from the beginning is a national project,' Hierro said. 'Cristiano has opened up soccer in this country to the world. It's phenomenal that he had the courage to come here, stay here, and open up the Saudi Arabian league to the world.'
