Grass-cutter jailed eight months for slashing policeman in Kuantan
Magistrate Ellyna Othman handed down the sentence to Muhamad Firdaus Abdul Hamid, 37, ordering his jail term to begin from his arrest date on Aug 2.
The accused was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code for intentionally harming Corporal Muhammad Shafril Izzwan Ismail with a machete and two smaller blades.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' jail, a fine, whipping, or a combination of these punishments.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Firdaus Ahmad Mokhlis urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence in the public interest.
Defence counsel Mohd Azlan Mohd Arish@Arshad stated the accused is single and earns RM70 daily as a grass-cutter.
Police reports revealed the victim suffered machete wounds to his back, chin, and left hand during the Aug 2 incident.
Authorities responded to a disturbance involving a man armed with a machete, believed to be mentally unstable.
The attack occurred at 5.15 pm in front of a house in Felda Bukit Kuantan. - Bernama

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has recorded a statement from an individual in its investigation into alleged false content circulated on social media in connection with the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir. MCMC said the person was summoned to the Cheras district police headquarters yesterday, and a mobile phone and SIM card were also seized to assist in its investigation, Bernama reported. 'The content is believed to contain false information touching on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues, which could cause public confusion and disrupt the authorities' investigation,' it said in a statement. The commission urged the public to allow the investigation process to run its course and to be wary of speculative content that could mislead the public. 'The spread of unverified information not only risks hurting the feelings of the victim's family but also breaches ethical values and may interfere with the course of justice,' it said. Zara, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at about 4am. Yesterday, the Form One student's grave was exhumed on the orders of the Attorney-General's Chambers, which called for further investigations to ensure every aspect of the case is thoroughly scrutinised.

Two schoolgirls charged after Form 1 student found bound and gagged in toilet
SUNGAI PETANI: Two 13-year-old girls have pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here to two charges of assault and wrongfully confining a schoolmate. The Form One students entered their plea after the joint charges were read before Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri. On the first charge, both accused are alleged to have voluntarily caused hurt to the 13-year-old victim in a school toilet at 6.40pm on July 14. They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. On the second charge, both are alleged to have wrongfully confined the victim at the same location, time and date. This charge was brought under Section 342 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The court later set bail at RM2,000 each with one surety, with the condition that neither accused contacts the victim. Mention was fixed for Sept 23. Previous media reports stated that a Form One student was found bound and gagged in a school toilet here. In another case, two 15-year-old boys pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to a 16-year-old boy at a school in the district at 12.15pm on July 21. They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The court did not impose sentencing pending the status of their character reports, fixed for Oct 28. Bail was set at RM1,000 each with one surety. – Bernama
