South African man jailed for attempting to smuggle stolen Toyota Hilux to Zimbabwe

A 34-year-old man, Solomon Chiloane, has appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate's Court in Limpopo, after he was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
The case against Chiloane was postponed to 29 July 2025 for further investigations, while he was remanded in custody.
Chiloane was arrested after police in Limpopo received information about a stolen Toyota Hilux bakkie. The vehicle was reported stolen on Saturday around the Lyttleton policing area in Tshwane.
'On Monday, information was received about the bakkie that was reportedly driven from Gauteng province along the R101 public road headed to Limpopo province,' said provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The Limpopo anti-smuggling task team and private security companies sprang into action and a joint operation was activated.
The bakkie was positively spotted entering the town of Mokopane, and it was intercepted and searched.

'A 34-year-old male driver could not provide a satisfactory response about the origin of the white Toyota Hilux bakkie, valued at more than R700,000, and was immediately placed under arrest on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' said Ledwaba.

'Preliminary investigations revealed that the bakkie was intended to be illegally smuggled to Zimbabwe.'
Police in Limpopo said they have established that Chiloane is a South African national.
Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed Chiloane's arrest and the recovery of the stolen vehicle.
'This collaboration between police and private security has proven from time to time that working jointly we can achieve more in combating the organized syndicate targeting vehicle smuggling,' said Hadebe.
On Tuesday, IOL reported that a 48-year-old Zimbabwean man, Stephen Nyoni, has been remanded in custody after appearing in a Limpopo court for possessing a stolen vehicle.
A 48-year-old Zimbabwean man, Stephen Nyoni, was arrested in Limpopo while allegedly driving a Nissan Patrol V8 5.6, stolen in Pretoria, towards the Beitbridge port of entry.

The high-performance luxury sport utility vehicle, valued at over R2.5 million, was intercepted during a targeted anti-smuggling operation.
The anti-crime blitz was conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo in collaboration with private security partners along the N1 highway near Polokwane.

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal lead South Africa in cash-in-transit robberies

In the first six months of the year, almost 100 CITs have been recorded in South Africa, according to the Cash-in-Transit Association of South Africa (Citasa). A provincial breakdown of these robberies revealed the following: Gauteng (34%), KwaZulu-Natal (33%), North West (9%), Eastern Cape (8%), Western Cape (6%), Mpumalanga (5%), Limpopo (3%) and Free State (2%). 'It is possible that the current trend may continue, but CIT robbers also commit robberies in other provinces, such as the Free State, during July 2025.' Clark said the decline in CIT robberies can be attributed to several factors stemming from the collaboration among various role players. He said these factors include preventative measures including the sharing of information; significant arrests by the police; successful opposition to bail applications; armed CIT teams defending themselves by returning fire and drivers using defensive driving techniques; CIT teams supporting each other to prevent robberies; rollout of upgraded fleet vehicles across the industry; and perpetrators failed attempts to access cash despite using explosives with multiple detonations. 'The CIT industry continues to observe that CIT robbers released on bail or parole often return to CIT robberies. Therefore, the risk of CIT robberies remains and requires ongoing vigilance and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, including the public,' Clark said. 'One security guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was later conveyed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The suspects also reportedly robbed two firearms and ammunition before fleeing from the scene,' Netshiunda said. Mi7 National Group reported that a CIT robbery occurred on Murray Road, leaving one guard shot and another traumatised. 'One security officer was found on site, disoriented and visibly traumatised, but without physical injury. A second officer was discovered nearby with gunshot wounds and in a serious condition. Mi7 ALS (advanced life support) medics initiated treatment on scene, stabilised the patient with the help of another service provider, and transported him under ALS care to a nearby hospital for further treatment,' Mi7 said. Mi7 added that unconfirmed reports from the scene suggest around 12 suspects using three or four vehicles were involved in the incident. Moreover, the suspects were armed with high-calibre rifles, including AK-47s, and the armoured vehicle was bombed during the incident. KwaZulu Private Ambulance (KZPA) service also responded to the CIT. KZPA spokesperson Craig Botha said it was the second CIT the service responded to this week, following a similar incident on the R34 in Vryheid on Saturday night, which had no injuries.

Duo charged with possession of illegal firearms
THE uMkhanyakude District task team and Hluhluwe SAPS arrested two men for possession of illegal firearms in different areas last Friday. The men, aged 47 and 51, were nabbed during intelligence-driven operations in the KwaMsane and Hluhluwe areas. ALSO READ: Multi-stakeholder imbizo to address rampant crime The 47-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and eight rounds of ammunition. uMkhanyakude Cluster police spokesperson Lieutenant Sibusiso Mkhize said, after the arrest the operation proceeded to the Hluhluwe area where the 51-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 11 live rounds of ammunition. They are expected to appear on Tuesday, 22 July for a formal bail application,' said Mkhize. Mbalula, came out to address the media during a short interval at the Cape Sun Hotel, where the ANC's National Working Committee (NWC) met with the Provincial Executive Committee. This forms part of the ANC's ongoing efforts to strengthen its organisational capacity and engage directly with structures of the movement across regions and districts. However, there were some senior members of the party who questioned the step-aside rule and its effectiveness, saying it only applied to some. The rule requires members of the party who are facing serious allegations to step aside from their positions. The rule has seen some ANC officials having to vacate office until they were cleared of any wrongdoing. A senior member said there was commotion among ANC corridors in Luthuli House because some felt Ramaphosa was selective in the application of the step-aside rule. He said once members are arrested or appear in court, then the rule is applied. 'When last did you see people supporting each other going to court with ANC t-shirts? You get arrested, you stand on your own. Step-aside rule applies. Those who vulgarise things shamelessly will say that the rule doesn't apply to Senzo Mchunu, but the president did put him aside, with immediate effect. 'Argue the question of how that has happened, but he is aside. We've got an acting Minister (Gwede Mantashe) who is chairing the meeting today. I've explained, and I'm repeating it again today - Senzo will not step aside in relation to the ANC. He is an elected member. Once we listen to that, it is also evaluated in terms of facts by a competent, independent judge, and a judicial commission like the president appointed, then we can pass judgment. 'Let's allow the process to follow; this is what all South Africans look forward to. Even we're looking forward to that. 'The principle of our jurisprudence allows that somebody's story must also be listened to, and that is there is any wrongdoing by him, and all of that, the ANC, in terms of its renewal process, this kicks in,' Mbalula said.'There are many ANC members who are step-aside, who have appeared in court, who have been arrested. 'We are the only party in South Africa that practices things even beyond the jurisprudence. Even Magashule failed to challenge the step-aside rule.' 'It was affirmed by the Constitutional Court that there was nothing unconstitutional about the step-aside rule because it is entrenched in the ANC constitution itself. 'There is nothing like selective justice, and selective application of the step-aside rule. If you are arrested, you appear before the courts, even before you appear. Once you are arrested, you step aside.' Mbalula also touched on how the NWC's visit to the Western Cape structure is their fifth in a series of visits to provinces, as they seek to strengthen their organisational branches in the region. He said that they have been receiving reports from their visits. President Ramaphosa was in the Boland Region on Saturday as part of their efforts. 'All of us were in different regions (of the province). We interacted with branches that gave us reports, and we are currently processing those reports. Tomorrow (on Monday), the working committee will meet to reflect on the reports and chat on the way forward to strengthen our organisation here in the province.'
