South Africa captain Temba Bavuma ruled out of Zimbabwe Test series with hamstring injury sustained at WTC final
After guiding South Africa to a historic World Test Championship win last week against Australia with a strained hamstring, captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the Proteas two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to start on June 28. 'Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Bavuma sustained the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on day three of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground. He is set to undergo further scans to assess the extent of the injury. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in his absence,' the South Africa cricket team's X account posted. Bavuma was injured in the second innings of South Africa's five-wicket victory, soldiering on as he scored a crucial 66 in a match-winning third wicket stand of 147 with centurion Aiden Markram. Keshav Maharaj will captain the side in Bavuma's absence, with no replacement named in the squad for the latter. 'As much as the Aussies were saying we were chokers in the field, we never made it our thing. We just said we've got to keep going and be relentless, and the harder we knock, the doors will open. Chokers was not our tag to carry, we never spoke about it, although you always feel a responsibility when you wear the badge,' Bavuma had said earlier this week at the Cricket South Africa headquarters, where his side were given an official welcome. The win over Australia gave South Africa their first major trophy since 1998, when they won the ICC KnockOut Trophy (later rebranded as ICC Championship Trophy). The Proteas received a grand welcome after returning home on Wednesday. Bavuma's men were greeted by several thousand supporters when they landed in Johannesburg following a five-wicket win over Australia in the final at Lord's last week. The first test vs Zimbabwe will be played from June 28-July 2 at the Queens Sports Club, with the second also in Bulawayo from July 6-10.

‘You can control game more if you bat first': Alastair Cook unconvinced by Stokes' decision to bowl first in ENG vs IND 1st Test
England skipper Ben Stokes's decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds on Friday seemed to have gone India's way after openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a 91-run stand for the opening wicket. Although two quick wickets against the run of play just before lunch shifted the momentum back to the home side, former England captain Alastair Cook still seems unconvinced by Stokes's decision to bowl and felt it was a good toss to lose for Shubman Gill-led India. FOLLOW: IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 1st Test Day 1 'The fact it's so hot… If you bowl first and don't bowl them out, you're bowling all day. England are guaranteed to bowl all day, and probably a bit tomorrow, looking at the conditions, unless India don't bat as well as they've started. Therefore, you're backing up. Say India bat 120 overs. They only have to bowl for two sessions (on day two). You feel like you can control the game more if you bat first,' said Cook to the BBC's Test Match Special. Jaiswal and Rahul played solid cricket for the first 24 overs, making it the first instance in the last seven Tests at Headingley where a wicket didn't fall in the first 10 overs of the game. It was also the first fifty-plus opening stand in the first innings of a Leeds Test since Graeme Smith & Alviro Petersen's 120-run stand in 2012. After winning the toss, Stokes elected to field first and said, 'We'll bowl. Headingley is a very good cricket wicket. We've had some really good games here. Want to try and use the early conditions. Been a long time coming, bit strange that this is just the second series but we're ready. It's been mixed, some lads have played county cricket, we've had three days of really good cricket. Usual suspects in the top seven, Woakes, Brydon, Bashir, Tongue and myself make up the bowling.' India skipper Gill said, 'We would've bowled first as well, might be a bit tough in the first session but it should be good to bat on later. Sun is out, should be a good batting deck for us. Preparation has been amazing, we played a practice game in Beckenham, lads are feeling great. Sai makes his debut, Karun comes in. Sai will bat at three.' India were 92/2 at Lunch after Rahul fell for 42 and debutant Sai Sudharsan was strangled down leg by Stokes.

KL Rahul's 'Unfair Treatment' Called Out By Ex-India Star. Sanjay Manjrekar Contradicts
Former India cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Sanjay Manjrekar had contrasting takes on star batter KL Rahul 's international career, especially Test cricket. Since his debut in 2015, Rahul has played 58 Tests so far, scoring 3,257 runs with a below-par average of 33.57. However, the 33-year-old has not been able to establish himself, be it due to injury or form. However, Dasgupta called out the BCCI for its unfair treatment towards the player. He pointed out Rahul has been made to play at different positions, as per the need of the team. "See, I just hope they give him a permanent position now. He made his debut in 2014. It's been more than a decade, but we still don't know where does he fit into the Indian Test side? Is he a middle-order batter? Is he an opener? I think it's about time to tell him, 'KL, you've got to play this series or whatever, and you're going to play as an opener. This is what you're going to do. And I think once you give him that position, that security, we will see a different KL Rahul," Dasgupta said on Star Sports. Dasgupta suggested it's time for the management to give Rahul a fixed spot, since the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are no longer part of the Test setup. "As of now, in every series,Virat Kohli's absence felt even before first ball is bowled in IND vs ENG Test: 'Moved on from Gavaskar, Sachin but...' it's like KL Rahul is trying to cement his position from one series to the next. You need a wicketkeeper in South Africa, call him. You need a No. 5, call him. Opener? Yes. So that's something I think is being quite unfair on him. It's been a decade now. Come on. Give him that series, maybe more than that and tell him this is how we are looking at you - as an opener - and play him," he added. On the contrary, Manjrekar was of the opinion that Rahul has not shown consistency when it comes to Test cricket. "Am I allowed to contradict? I will be nice. I believe KL Rahul has not shown the kind of consistency that's expected of him at any position. Had this been a guy who averaged 52 as an opener, nobody would dare drop him to No. 4 or 5. Having said that, huge responsibility on him. And Deep, given your assessment of leaving the balls, we'll see how Rahul goes about it today," said Manjrekar.
