Britain to face more cyberattacks as AI adoption grows, minister says
LONDON, May 7 (Reuters) - The growth of AI will increase the number and sophistication of cyberattacks on Britain, senior minister Pat McFadden said on Wednesday.
British companies, public bodies and institutions have been hit by a wave of cyberattacks in the past few years, costing them tens of millions of pounds and often months of disruption.

The companies have not given any details on the nature of the attacks.
"Today we are declassifying an intelligence assessment that shows AI is going to increase not only the frequency but the intensity of cyberattacks in the coming years," said McFadden, who as cabinet office minister is responsible for UK cyber security.
"Our security systems will only remain secure if they keep pace with what our adversaries are doing," he said.
Speaking at the National Cyber Security Centre's CyberUK 2025 conference, he said that last year the NCSC received almost 2,000 reports of cyberattacks, with almost 90 deemed "significant" and 12 at "the very top end of severity". This was three times the number of severe attacks compared to the year before.
McFadden said the recent cyberattacks on British retailers should serve as a wake-up call for everyone, including government and the public sector, businesses and organisations.
"Cyber security isn't a luxury, it's an absolute necessity."
He said the government will later this year publish a new cyber security strategy, while new legislation, the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, will grant government new powers to direct regulated organisations to reinforce their cyber defences.
M&S and the Co-op are widely reported to have been the victims of ransomware attacks where criminals infiltrate companies' computer systems, encrypt them and demand payment before allowing them to resume control.
NCSC CEO Richard Horne told the conference he wanted to see a future where paying ransoms is no longer considered an option, where the business model for the attackers no longer works.

Mr Kidwai said there were 232 passengers and 12 crew members onboard. It is the first crash involving a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 posted on social media platform X: 'We are following reports of a crash of Air India flight #AI171 from Ahmedabad to London. 'We received the last signal from the aircraft at 08:08:51 UTC (shortly before 9.09am BST), just seconds after take off. 'The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB.' It added the signal from the aircraft was lost 'less than a minute after take-off'. Flightradar24 said flight tracking data shows after taking off, the plane reached a maximum altitude of 625ft, which is about 425ft above the airport. It then started to descend at a rate of 475 feet per minute. Air India was acquired by Tata Group from the Indian government in January 2022 after racking up billions of pounds of losses. The airline's UK operations are at Birmingham, Gatwick and Heathrow, with routes to a number of Indian cities such as Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Recent analysis by the PA news agency found it was the worst airline for delays to flights from UK airports last year, with planes taking off by an average of more than 45 minutes later than scheduled. The airline has gained a poor reputation for delays and cancellations in recent years, partly caused by a lack of funds to purchase spare aircraft parts, which led to some of its fleet being grounded. Sterling drops to six-week low against euro
(Reuters) - Sterling rose against the U.S. dollar on Thursday but dropped to a six-week low against the euro, following weak economic data from the U.S. and the UK. The euro hit its highest level in almost four years against the U.S. currency as investors rushed into safe-haven assets, while remaining cautious about the impact of the U.S.-China trade deal. The downturn in British manufacturing was less steep than initially feared in May, but output, orders, and jobs continued to decline as companies cited recent tax hikes and U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. "Thursday's data shows the UK economy continues to face challenges," said Nick Andrews, senior forex strategist at HSBC. "Tuesday's labour market data also loosened more than expected while Wednesday's government spending review did little to lift the outlook for growth but instead turned the focus to where potential tax rises might fall in the Autumn." British government bond yields and the pound dropped on Tuesday after the release of weaker-than-expected labour market data that showed wage growth slowing to its lowest since September 2024, boosting bets on Bank of England rate cuts. The pound fell 0.6% to 85.28 pence per euro after hitting 85.37, its lowest since May 2. Analysts recently flagged that the yield spreads between the UK and the euro area pointed to sterling at 85 pence. However, the fleet was reportedly grounded in 2013 after fires related to lithium-ion batteries in its electrical power system. It is understood that airline operators including British Airways, United Airways and Qatar Airways use the model. Boeing planes have been involved in other incidents in recent years such as the Lion Air crash in 2018 involving a Boeing 737 Max which killed 189 people. In 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, involving another 737 Max aircraft, crashed killing 157 people on board. The entire Boeing 737 Max fleet was grounded after the incidents.
