TORONTO — After both made cameos off the bench Wednesday night, Trent Grisham and Austin Wells returned to the Yankees lineup Thursday for the first time since their respective injury scares.
Grisham had been out since leaving Monday's game with hamstring tightness, with the team initially fearing it might lead to an injured list stint.

But the center fielder healed quicker than expected and was ready to go by Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays.
'He feels good about it. Training staff feels good about it,' Boone said before the Yankees' 8-5 loss. 'Is it 100 percent? Maybe not. But feel good about that he's good enough and sound enough to go.'
Grisham returned to the leadoff spot Thursday and went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, while also hitting a game-tying solo home run in the third inning.

His comeback allowed Boone to shift Cody Bellinger to right field and give Aaron Judge a DH day after spending the last three days on the turf.
Though he has cooled off from his red-hot start, Grisham still entered Thursday second on the team with 15 home runs to go with an .816 OPS in 73 games.
'He's been so important to us on both sides of the ball,' Boone said. 'His center-field play, his at-bat quality all year. Even when he went through that 'downturn,' you watch day in and day out, it's a good at-bat. He's hit for power. He's got on base. He's been a really good two-way player, All-Star-caliber player for us in the first half. So, big to be able to avoid [the injured list].'

Wells, meanwhile, started at catcher for the first time since Saturday.
In between, he underwent testing for a lack of circulation in his left pointer finger, with the results showing arterial damage instead of anything more serious.
Wells went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout in Thursday's loss.

Following Thursday's game, the Yankees optioned Clayton Beeter back to Triple-A after he got tagged for three runs on three hits and two walks across 1 ²/₃ innings in relief of the injured Clarke Schmidt.
DJ LeMahieu was out of the lineup Thursday, but the Yankees still declined to use it as a chance to bounce Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to his best defensive position, second base.
Instead, Chisholm remained at third base with Oswald Peraza starting at second.
'I don't want to just move him back and forth and do that necessarily in that form or fashion,' Boone said.

Asked about how much he is considering moving Chisholm back to second, Boone continued to say it was an ongoing decision.

'Continue to evaluate our roster, see where we're at, see what makes the most sense,' he said. 'It's something I think about a little bit.'
Peraza lifted for pinch hitter in the top of the seventh, and LeMahieu came on to finish the game at second base.

The last time they saw Juan Soto, the Yankees shut down their former teammate in the May Subway Series, holding him to 1-for-10 with four walks and three strikeouts.
Entering this weekend's rematch, Soto is coming off NL Player of the Month honors after a torrid June.
'He's had a Juan-like month,' Boone said. 'So it'll be a challenge holding him down. Comes down to executing at a really high level.'

The Yankees signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league contract Thursday, while losing Triple-A infielder CJ Alexander on waivers to the Dodgers.

Wisconsin's highest-rated players in EA Sports College Football 26

Wisconsin's top-rated players in EA Sports College Football 26 shouldn't come as much of a surprise. They are: senior cornerback Ricardo Hallman (90 overall) and senior right tackle Riley Mahlman (89 overall). The veterans are two of the program's longest-tenured returning starters entering the 2025 season. Each joined the Badgers with the class of 2021, Mahlman as a four-star recruit and Hallman as one of the class' more underrated prospects. They then each took similar paths to playing time. Hallman started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, totaling nine tackles, one for loss, one interception and three pass deflections. Mahlman also entered that season as a starter, though only played in seven games after suffering an injury during the season-opener. The two have been some of the Big Ten's best at their respective positions since that shared breakthrough season. Hallman was a Third Team All-American in 2023 after a 34-tackle, seven-interception campaign. Mahlman did not share the same accolade, though he has been among ProFootballFocus' highest-graded Big Ten offensive linemen over the last two seasons, plus again projects as one of the conference's best entering 2025. The cornerback and offensive lineman will lead the Badgers' defense and offense, respectively, in 2025. Hallman is the team's clear top cornerback, and may need to shoulder a greater responsibility with top underclassman Xavier Lucas gone to Miami. Mahlman, on the other hand, will again slot in at right tackle to begin the season. He will anchor an offensive line that lost starting left tackle Kevin Heywood to a spring practice injury. Stay tuned throughout the month as EA Sports unveils the rest of its rankings for the new edition of its video game. Complete story on friendship of Sixers' Trendon Watford, Tyrese Maxey

CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers made a move in free agency to bring in Trendon Watford as they look to build their roster back toward championship contention. When healthy, the Sixers have as good a chance as anybody to win in the East, but it's important to build a strong roster around their star trio. Enter Watford who is a terrific passer and playmaker for somebody his size at 6-foot-9 and will look to give Philadelphia versatility, depth, and playmaking which is paramount in today's NBA. On top of filling a new needs for the Sixers, it helps that Watford has a close friendship with Tyrese Maxey. Watford stated that Maxey gave him a call in free agency, which shows how close they are, but Watford went deep into the story of their friendship. "Well, his birthday is the day before mine. Let's just say that," Watford smiled and laughed. "We were at a high school camp together in I think 9th grade. He claims that the group of guys I was with weren't really talking to him because he wasn't highly ranked yet or whatever. We locked in from that point on. My family knows his family. We ended up being roommates for I think the McDonald's game." That 2019 McDonald's All-American game was stacked with talent as Watford was on the East Team and Maxey was on the West. The two of them were able to build this friendship in high school and have been able to keep it going through college and in the NBA. "We ended up just kicking it off, man," Watford explained. "I know his sister, his uncle, his brother, everybody in the family. It's definitely an experience that we talk about and it's crazy that now we're teammates. I was able to talk some trash to him when we got the win here (in Philly) last (in Brooklyn). And now we're teammates, so I'm excited." Even as Watford was preparing for the league during his time at LSU, the two kept in contact. Maxey was a rookie with the Sixers and he talked with Watford to help him understand what's coming at the next level. Even he walked into the team's facility in Camden, NJ for the first time on Thursday, Maxey gave him a call. The All-Star guard is excited to have one of his best friends with him now in Philadelphia to keep things moving in a positive direction. "I remember talking to him my second year in college, which was his rookie year, and just talking to him about some of the stuff he was dealing with, I already had a good idea of what I was coming into," Watford added. "Man, it's great. We can't believe it, honestly. We're still in shock. He called me right before this and was like, 'Man, I can't believe you're in Philly and going to go to the facility.' It's crazy. It's crazy to be on the team right now." Now, the two friends who have stuck with each other for quite some time now will look to help the Sixers bounce back from a miserable 2024-25 season.
