District soccer
For the past three years, the Florida Christian boys' soccer team could not beat Miami Divine Savior Academy.
Since January 2022, the Patriots had faced the Sharks three times and walked away empty-handed each time.
That changed, when it counted most, in the District 15-2A finals, where the Patriots won 5-3.
Divine Savior entered the district final as the No.1 seed. Florida Christian No.2.
In the semifinals, Divine Savior beat Miami Ransom Everglades 4-0, and Florida Christian defeated True North 3-0.
That set-up a 1 vs. 2 showdown for the district championship.
The Patriots (8-8-3) scored first with an early goal from Cristian Garcia off an assist by Lucas Gutierrez. Florida Christian scored again on Elijah Zapata's goal for a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes. Divine Savior (6-6-3) cut the deficit in half on a penalty kick, but the Patriots scored again via Alexis Bennetot to dominate the first half.
Early in the second half, Garcia scored his second goal for a 4-1 lead. Divine Savior started a comeback with another penalty kick and a goal after to make things close. Ahead 4-3 and down a man late in the game, Alexis Bennetot put the game away with the final goal off a beautiful sequence of passes that split the defense -- the final pass from Garcia.
Florida Christian players collapsed to the turf in exhaustion and elation as they finally won the district title.
For Florida Christian, this victory was more than just a win—it was a statement. From 2017 to 2020, Florida Christian competed as an independent program without district competition. Under the direction of Coach Fernando 'Chele' Hernandez, the Patriots transformed into a top contender, culminating in their district championship triumph.

Berent, Bertorelli, Wahlbrink are the 4A-1A Broward Softball Players of the Year

A dominant pitcher has always been the biggest building block for a successful softball team. Coral Springs Charter had two this season in senior Sophia Bertorelli and sophomore Courtney Wahlbrink. And over at Cardinal Gibbons, junior Lydia Berent is becoming one of the most dominant pitchers and players overall in recent memory in Broward County, which earned her a scholarship offer at one of the country's most prestigious programs. After dominant performances once again this past season, Bertorelli and Wahlbrink are this year's Broward Co-Pitchers of the Year for Classes 4A-1A. And Berent is the Class 4A-1A Player of the Year. Berent could have been named either award winner after going 20-6 this season, striking out a county-high 243 batters, and compiling a 1.11 ERA. She also hit .500 with three home runs, 11 doubles and scored 39 runs. Her efforts led Gibbons to its first 20-win season in over two decades, and she has been the centerpiece in the Chiefs' emergence as one of the county's best teams over the past three seasons. 'I just matured a whole lot mentally and physically from last year, and really learned how to lead,' Berent said. 'We had a young team so it was important to have some of us with extra experience. It's just trusting the amount of time I work and preparation I put in. We've never been as good as we are right now.' Berent said she chose to attend Gibbons as her older brother did for academics as well as softball. She has attracted the interest of multiple Division-I schools over the past couple of years. But when Stanford University came calling, Berent jumped at the chance and committed during a visit last winter. Berent has one more season to try to lead Gibbons to a state title. But after that, she hopes to study something in the engineering field while following in the footsteps of other South Florida softball greats such as former Southwest Miami star Missy Penna. 'I knew in my heart that's where I belong,' Berent said. 'It's an amazing program and a chance for an amazing education.' Bertorelli is also heading to a college with a strong combination of academics and athletics this fall as she will pitch at Boston College. She heads there after a resilient return from a shoulder injury her junior year. This season, Bertorelli went 11-2 with 122 strikeouts and a 1.23 ERA in 74 innings. Bertorelli said she worked on keeping her pitching mechanics consistent to avoid any further injury and felt like herself in the circle by midseason. Bertorelli credited having Wahlbrink's support both on and off the field as a key reason for her success this season. 'It was difficult to come back, but having Courtney and our coaches supporting me helped,' Bertorelli said. 'I felt like I didn't have all the pressure on my shoulders.' Meanwhile, Wahlbrink complemented her perfectly in the circle for Coral Springs Charter as she went 13-1 with 117 strikeouts and a 1.02 ERA in 75 1/3 innings. Bertorelli's presence on the team again was a boost for Wahlbrink as well as she improved as a hitter, going .389 with 19 RBI. The two led the Panthers back to the Class 3A regional finals and kept Coral Springs Charter as one of the most dominant teams in the state. 'I was able to focus more on the hitting side and I think I was able to drive balls better to the opposite field than I did before,' Wahlbrink said. 'Me and Soph are really close and she's been like a role model to me forever. We both help each other on and off the field. 'The adversity she's faced and coming back from injury is tough. She came back with a strong mentality and became an even stronger pitcher.'

Dakota loses hard-fought state semifinal game to LeRoy in extra innings

PEORIA, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Dakota's Class 1A state semifinal game Friday against LeRoy was literally a game of inches. A tenth inning ground ball by LeRoy's Emil Mennega glanced off the glove of Dakota's diving shortstop Finley Banks. The ball caromed into short centerfield allowing LeRoy to score the game-winning run and take the game two starting pitchers were superb. Dakota sophomore AJ Howarth pitched 9.2 innings allowing only six hits and two runs. Only one run was earned. She struck out nine sophomore Jacey Hagerman pitched ten innings She allowed eight hits and one run for the win to improve her record to scored its only run in the top of the second inning when Natalie Bartha sent a fly ball to deep right field for a triple that drove in Hailey Kerchner. Dakota led 1-0 until LeRoy answered in the fifth inning on a pop fly that dropped into short centerfield. An ill-advised throw to third base to try to get a LeRoy base runner was late and wild. It got away allowing the LeRoy runner to score and tie the record is now 25-6. The Indians have one more game to play in Peoria. At 9 a.m. Saturday they'll face Casey-Westfield in the 1A third-place see highlights of this game and get postgame thoughts from Dakota coach Jeff Kinney, watch the media player above. Lady Gators ring in historic season

WEWAHITCHKA, Fla. (WMBB) – Wewahitchka High School girls' weightlifting team made history by being crowned state champions in both the Olympic and traditional categories of the FHSAA Class 1A Rural Division. The achievement was credited not just to the athletes, but to the entire school and community, according to head coach Bobby Johns. 'It was really more than just about our girls,' Johns said. 'It was about our school and our community, and it was meant to be shared with them.' Two lifters were named double state champions: Emma Rustin and Mackenzie Hatcher, who each took home titles in both Olympic and traditional events. As a team, Wewahitchka was awarded both the Olympic and Traditional State Championships, a feat not often achieved, especially by a school of its size. Rustin, a junior, was named champion with a 365-pound total in Olympic and 380 pounds in Traditional. 'A great feeling was experienced,' Rustin said. 'I felt like I represented well. I think we all did. The pride of the community was carried with us. Hard work was proven to pay off, even when it doesn't feel like it.' Hatcher, a sophomore, posted 395 pounds in Olympic and 390 in Traditional. Ashlyn Ake added a first-place finish with 385 pounds in Olympic, contributing to the team's overall success. 'I am definitely very honored,' Hatcher said. 'Having the support of my school and being able to grow as an athlete and a person over these four years—those memories will always be treasured.'
