Russian fertilizer giant to boost exports to Africa
The company's CEO, Dmitry Konyaev, unveiled the goal at the 'Business dialogue Russia-Africa' panel discussion at the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Thursday.
Konyaev said the goal of increasing annual shipments from 1 million metric tons at the end of 2024 to 5 million by the end of the decade would represent 'real results and real achievements' for both Uralchem and Africa's agricultural sector. He added that by the end of 2024, Africa had imported only 10 million tons of fertilizers, which he described as disproportionately low for the continent.
According to the Uralchem CEO, the low distribution of fertilizers in Africa is a result of internal structural barriers, including poor logistics infrastructure and complicated financial settlement mechanisms.
'Often, an African farmer pays more than a European [farmer] for the same fertilizers. It's absolutely absurd,' Konyaev stated.
To address these challenges, Uralchem has decided to pursue local distribution by creating joint ventures with African states. The company has already launched operations in South Africa and Cote d'Ivoire, according to Konyaev.
Mikhail Rybnikov, the CEO of PhosAgro, another major Russian fertilizer company, said the key buyers of the company's products now include South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Morocco.
'Our company makes an important contribution to strengthening food security and food sovereignty in African countries,' Rybnikov said.
Since late 2022, Uralchem has supplied more than 134,000 tons of fertilizers to African nations free of charge. Over 111,000 tons have been shipped from European ports and warehouses to Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe in collaboration with the UN World Food Program.

Indian and Russian foreign ministers to meet in Moscow
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Moscow next week and hold key bilateral discussions with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. Since 2022, the two countries have significantly strengthened economic ties, with Moscow becoming New Delhi's main energy supplier. Trade between the two nations is estimated to have reached $66 billion in 2024, with a target of $100 billion by 2030. Jaishankar's Moscow trip comes close on the heels of a visit by Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to the Russian capital, where he met with President Vladimir Putin and held talks with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and Manturov last week. Putin is expected to visit India later this year for the annual India-Russia summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to India's ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, the two leaders share a 'positive chemistry.' Putin and Modi spoke in a phone call on Friday and discussed the latest developments in the Ukraine peace process. The Russian president is set to meet his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Alaska later this week to discuss the conflict.

Russia has emerged victorious on all fronts in a standoff with the West, which is trying to dominate the global economy and violates international law, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday. He emphasized that Moscow has managed to defy multiple sanctions imposed by Western countries over Ukraine. The West has introduced a record number of sanctions against Russia over the past decade targeting Russia's finance, energy, defense, and technology sectors as well as multiple individuals, officials and companies. During his TV program Con Maduro +, the Venezuelan president spoke out against policies of economic blockade and forced restrictions, stressing that 'the Russian economy has demonstrated great resilience, withstood all the missiles of sanctions, and won the victory.' 'Russia and Putin won the economic war, the military war, the political war, and the diplomatic war,' Maduro said, praising Moscow's resilience in the face of international pressure. The Venezuelan leader has decried policies of unilateral sanctions, criticizing international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN) for their 'ineffectiveness.' The Bolivarian Republic has been subjected to a wide range of economic restrictions imposed by the US and its allies, targeting the nation's oil industry, financial sector, and senior government officials. Venezuela has been a strong supporter of Russia, consistently backing Moscow's position on major global issues. Caracas has repeatedly condemned Western sanctions against Russia while deepening strategic ties through diplomatic support, joint peace proposals, and a growing number of economic agreements. Global South cyber forum to focus on ‘non-Western' models
A cybersecurity and AI forum being held in Equatorial Guinea next month will focus on 'non-Western' approaches to protecting digital infrastructure and managing cross-border payments, the co-chair of the organizing committee has said. The event will be held from September 15 to 17 and is backed by the president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, and his government. It aims to promote dialogue on digital and financial sovereignty outside Western frameworks. Alexander Ryzhov, co-chair of the organizing committee, told African Initiative that the discussions would center on models suited to the needs of the Global South economies, including the security of banking, payment, and telecommunications systems. 'The main goal of our forum is to present 'non-Western' cybersecurity concepts aimed at protecting the banking, payment, and telecommunications industries,' Ryzhov said. The event will cover topics including Russia's cybersecurity model for critical infrastructure, secure digital payment systems, and cloud storage solutions. Invited Russian stakeholders include Rosatom, Rostelecom, major commercial banks, IT and cloud service providers, Russian federal agency Rossotrudnichestvo, and energy companies such as Gazprom, Rosneft, and Severstal. The China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the United Nations Fund for South-South Cooperation (UNFSSC), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, BRICS Bank, Asian-African Fund, and Huawei Technologies Co. are also invited. In April, Aleksey Andreev, Russia's trade representative in Morocco, said Moscow is ready to support African countries in developing technologies that promote self-sufficiency and sovereignty. Russia offers 'not only software products, but an ecosystem of digital solutions that guarantee technological sovereignty and growth,' he said.
