Apple Announces ‘American Manufacturing Program', Adds US$100 Billion Investment

Apple CEO Tim Cook stands, as he along with US President Donald Trump (not pictured) present Apple's announcement of a $100 billion investment in US manufacturing, in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., August 6, 2025. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst ISTANBUL, Aug 7 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- US tech giant Apple on Wednesday announced an additional US$100 billion investment in domestic production, bringing its total planned investment in the country to US$600 billion over the next four years, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. The package includes a US$2.5 billion commitment to produce all cover glass for the iPhone and Apple Watch at Corning's manufacturing facility in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Apple said in a statement. 'For the first time ever, every single new iPhone and every single new Apple Watch sold anywhere in the world will contain cover glass made in Kentucky,' said Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House. bootstrap slideshow Cook noted that Apple had already committed US$500 billion earlier this year to strengthen US manufacturing and that the investment was delivering results. 'We broke ground on a new factory in Houston to make advanced AI servers. Last month, the very first test unit rolled off that factory's line, proudly made in America,' he said. As part of the new commitment, Apple is launching the American Manufacturing Programme, which Cook said will increase production of critical components in the US. The company has signed new agreements with 10 American firms. Apple is also working to build a full silicon supply chain within the US, from design to packaging, in partnership with various companies. Cook highlighted Apple's role in bringing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to Arizona, where it now produces tens of millions of chips for Apple.

Ringgit opens firmer on softer US$, rate cut hopes

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Thursday, lifted by a softer greenback amid growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) in the coming months. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2185/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said recent comments by Fed officials signalled that policy adjustments may be needed to address labour market weakness, reinforcing hopes of a rate cut at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. He noted that the upcoming FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17, is expected to see the Fed Funds Rate lowered by 25 basis points. "This would likely be ringgit-positive, as a Fed rate cut would narrow the interest rate differential with the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). "In light of current market conditions, the ringgit is expected to trade between 4.21 and 4.22 against the US dollar today,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8654/8707 from 2.8570/8619 on Wednesday, weakened versus the British pound to 5.6342/6442 from 5.6160/6253, and declined against the euro to 4.9192/9279 from 4.8929/9010. The local unit also fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2824/2885 from 3.2806/2863 and depreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0402/0715 from 13.0291/0567. Conversely, the ringgit strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.35 from 7.34/7.36 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.4 from 258.1/258.6. - Bernama

Pharmaniaga completes regularisation plan, set to exit PN17 by Q1 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Pharmaniaga Bhd has completed its Practice Note 17 (PN17) regularisation plan following the completion of its capital reduction exercise through the cancellation of RM520 million in issued share capital. In a statement yesterday, the pharmaceutical company said the step firmly sets the group on course to exit the PN17 status latest by the first quarter (1Q) of 2026. 'The capital reduction exercise, which involved the cancellation of RM520 million in issued share capital, was completed after confirmation was received today from the Registrar of Companies that all statutory requirements have been fulfilled. 'Following the completion of this exercise, the issued share capital of the group is RM249.62 million, comprising 6.55 billion shares,' it said. Pharmaniaga fell into PN17 status in February 2023, dragged by its RM552.3 million provision for 'slow-moving inventories' of Covid-19 vaccines. At the close of trading yesterday, the counter finished unchanged at 18.5 sen, with 28.69 million shares changing hands. — Bernama
