Young Hearts review – arrival of dishy teen neighbour sparks queer first love story
Elias (Lou Goossens) is a teen boy in rural Belgium, notionally going out with Valerie (Saar Rogiers), a girl at his school. His grandpa is a farmer nearby, his dad a composer of cheesy but successful pop songs. Elias is quietly stunned when a good-looking boy of his age moves in next door, just arrived from Brussels; this is Alexander (Marius De Saeger). They become friends; Alexander is perfectly calm and candid about being gay and then they become more than friends. They have to deal with homophobic bullying at school and Elias's discarded girlfriend has to handle her own feelings of anger and rejection.
The drama sorts itself out neatly before the closing credits and the older generation on both sides seem to be very enlightened, which is surprising, if admirable, in the case of Elias's rural farmer grandpa. In the end there is something a little too smooth and passionless in the film – there is nothing, for example to match or even approach the great speech from Michael Stuhlbarg's caring father to Timothée Chalamet's heartbroken Elio in Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name. Everyone knows that young love, gay and straight, is (mostly) about heartbreak and about moving on. I'm not sure that this film really understands that.
Young Hearts is in UK cinemas from 8 August.

Freddie Mercury's secret love child biography faced with backlash amid upcoming release
Freddie Mercury's secret love child has been embroiled in an indirect row ahead of the release of a biography written by Lesley-Ann Jones as fans doubt validity The biography of Freddie Mercury's secret love child has been met with harsh criticism as fans doubt the credibility of his secret daughter's claims. The book, written by Lesley-Ann Jones, is titled Love, Freddie, which is a culmination of his personal diaries, allegedly given to his daughter before his death in 1991. Along with the biography, Lesley-Ann is also set to release a Channel 5 documentary, which, according to reports, is currently being filmed in Switzerland. The documentary has a release date of September 5. And while many have embraced the fact that Freddie had fathered a child, there are some who doubt the validity of the claims. According to the MailOnline, some of Freddie's former staffers have been criticising Lesley-Ann, with one former associate reportedly writing in a group chat: "I don't understand why he didn't leave his only child something in his will. "I'm not saying it's a crock, but as it's the [SLUR DELETED] writing yet another book about a dead person, the facts are not looking good at the moment." Peter Freestone, who was Freddie's personal assistant at the time for 12 years until the singer's death, has also hit out at claims that the star had left diaries to his love child. He said: "I never saw any diaries. I never saw any child. I'm not saying they don't exist... It was a surprise to me when I heard. Very much." And while his bandmate and legendary guitarist Brian May remained silent over the allegations, his wife and former EastEnders star Anita Dobson spoke out. She had said: "I think there have always been rumours. The person to ask would be his [Freddie's] sister, Kashmira. But even then, I think, sometimes if people keep secrets, they do really keep those secrets." And the author Lesley-Ann also commented on the allegations. She has said: "There are a lot of extremely nasty comments being made, and some people are trying to discredit the book." She added: "What I would say is that the real inner circle, the other members of Queen, and Freddie's sister, would have denied this if they could, weeks ago, when the story broke." The book reportedly states that Freddie "accidentally fathered the child" and is only referred to as B.

Cruise passenger injured when water slide panel shatters
A cruise ship passenger was left injured after a water slide panel shattered while he was going down it. An unnamed man had been using the slide on Royal Caribbean's cruise ship Icon of the Seas yesterday when an acrylic glass panel broke. A large hole was left in the side of the slide as footage captured water gushing from the edges and falling onto the deck below. The man had been riding the 46ft high Frightening Bolt at the time - a drop slide which sends upright riders feet-first into the slide after the base drops out from under them. His condition has been described as 'stable', but more details about their injuries have not been made public. Passengers on board the cruise were heard in a clip of the incident shouting and gasping, with one yelling: 'Someone just fell out of the slide'. But Royal Caribbean have since confirmed that nobody fell out of the hole in the slide, and the man who was left injured, was treated after reaching the bottom. The Icon of the Seas, a 215ft wide and 198ft long ship, departed Miami on August 2 and is due to return to Miami on August 9. It is home to Category 6, which claims to be the largest water park on a cruise ship and features six slides. As well as the Frightening Drop, the water park also includes the Pressure Drop – a mat-racing slide which lets two passengers race head-to-head – and two raft slides where groups can slide together in another race. The latest incident comes after a British holidaymaker almost lost her foot after it was 'sliced wide open' in a horror accident at a water park in Spain in 2023. Mum-of-four Stephanie Somerville said she was left in agony and covered in blood after she was catapulted into a wall by a 'dangerous' water slide at Rio Safari Elche water park in Alicante.
