Yankees' RISP Troubles Continue

Runners in scoring position. It's an important stat in baseball because the ultimate goal for each team is to win games. In order to win games, you must outscore your opponent. And to outscore your opponent, you need to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you during the course of the game. It's far easier to score when you have runners in scoring position than it is when you don't.

For the New York Yankees, this season has been a struggle when it comes to successfully bringing runners home who are in scoring position, especially in the month of June. The latest example is their 0-for-12 performance against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Looking beyond just the one game, they rank last in MLB this season in runners left in scoring position per game, with an average of 4.06 runners per game. Over their last three games, that number is even worse at 5.67. These troubles are especially pronounced away from Yankee Stadium, as their road average is 4.47, as compared to 3.68 at home. (Stats courtesy of teamrankings.com).
In all fairness, those numbers are weighed down by a particularly bad recent stretch. During their last 12 games, the Yankees have an OPS of .391 with RISP. That's the worst mark in The League over that span.

As reported by The Athletic's Chris Kirschner, Manager Aaron Boone said the following about his team's struggles with RISP, 'I mean, baseball…You're going to have those stretches. I think, overall, we've been pretty good in those areas. I thought (Monday) our best at-bats were getting on base and putting the pressure on. They had them swinging and missing tonight when we had really good opportunities to score. That's where we want to be a little better.'
If they don't get better fast, then they're going to watch what little is left of their AL East lead completely evaporate.

"After that second year, no more excuses" - Shaquille O'Neal has an advice for Cooper Flagg if he ends up getting drafted by the Mavericks
"After that second year, no more excuses" - Shaquille O'Neal has an advice for Cooper Flagg if he ends up getting drafted by the Mavericks originally appeared on Basketball Network. The 2025 NBA Draft is just around the corner, taking place this Thursday at the Barclays Center, and all attention is on Duke forward Cooper Flagg. Widely regarded as the best prospect in his class, Flagg is the favorite among fans and analysts to be the Dallas Mavericks' number-one pick. Advertisement Shaquille O'Neal, the legendary NBA big man who knows what it is like to play in Texas, having played his high school basketball in San Antonio, remarked how playing in Dallas would benefit Flagg. He said he'll have a long leash at first before fans expect more out of him after his second season in the league. Shaq thinks patience will serve Flagg well Unlike most top picks, Cooper will not be expected to come in and immediately turn the Mavericks into a title contender. Instead, he'll have the luxury of developing under the guidance of established veterans like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and P.J. Washington. This will allow him to learn the NBA game at his own pace and develop his skills without the pressure of trying to do it all to elevate the Mavs. Shaq says Cooper has a luxury most top picks never had: time. Advertisement "Just take your time," Diesel said when asked what advice he would give to the highly touted player from Newport, Maine. "You know, good thing about NBA and our culture and Texas culture, they going to give you room to breathe. First year, we wanna see what you do. Now if you show us you can do some, that second year, we're gonna be expecting some. After that second year, no more excuses," Shaq established. The Mavs organization and its fans have endured a challenging period over the last few months following the trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The arrival of Flagg, though, has brought much-needed excitement and hope for the future. However, as patient as the fan base will be with the prized rookie, Dallas is hoping he can contribute in their bid to return to elite status in the West. "We going need you to step it up, but he comes from a great family background. He's a fine player. The Mavs have always been an excellent first-class organization," O'Neal said. "They're gonna treat him well. They're gonna teach them the things you need to know. I look forward to watching them play." Helpful lessons for the rook Shaq joined the NBA in 1992 and hit the ground running, winning Rookie of the Year honors and blazing a path across the league for the next two decades. Now retired and enjoying life as a popular broadcaster and a successful businessman, he shared some pearls of wisdom for Flagg to hopefully take to heart. Advertisement One of Shaq's main pieces of advice was the importance of listening to the right people, which means people with Cooper's best interests at heart. "You have to listen to the important people," Shaq conveyed. "First of all, listen to your parents, to the GM, listen to the trainer, and listen to the coach. And then, whoever you pick as your friend on the team or vet, listen to him." "You start going off doing your own thing because you made it and you got your money now, things can go like they're not supposed to go. So if you just listen, think my greatest attribute as a rookie was always listened," he continued. Flagg will wear a Mavericks cap on Thursday if everything goes as expected. And with the ideal situation he'll be going to, he is likely to flourish under the guidance of a strong and supportive team. 'F1' puts audiences with Brad Pitt, Damson Idris behind the wheel of Formula One race car
'F1: The Movie' is a throwback, good ol' summer blockbuster with all of the advantages and flaws associated with such a characterization. It's big, loud, brash with old-timey movie stars (Oh, hi Brad Pitt), stars on the rise (Hey there, Damson Idris) and it exists merely to entertain. In a week where Northeast Ohio is currently baking, it offers the perfect reason to escape to a local theater and not just because it feels like a convection oven outside. 'F1' offers the kind of escapist entertainment that once defined the summer movie season—films unburdened by the weight of expectations stemming from preexisting intellectual property. Truthfully, Formula One, is a property in and of itself, but it's not a world seen on film very often with one recent attempt being the biopic 'Rush.' And it's thoroughly exhilarating to see the race circuit explored via the world of modern filmmaking. The primary reason: Thanks to technology and director Joseph Kosinski's vision, audiences will be thrust into the driver's seat alongside Brad Pitt and Idris Elba, who play rival teammates on a Formula One team led by Ruben Cervantes (Oscar winner Javier Bardem). The team is imploding due to low morale and a lack of wins—both of which have led to financial troubles. In that regard, 'F1' represents an absolute thrill ride, an amusement park attraction come to life with respect to cinematic experience. For those who love being immersed in their film viewing, that's reason enough show up in a theater. Some of us are, however, appreciate the past when minor things such as plot, performances and script are necessary ingredients to that experience. With some exceptions, recent summer blockbusters aren't know for those elements. That's where the pitfalls come with 'F1.' In regards to those aspects, 'F1' can be thoroughly predictable with its story of the grizzled, wily veteran – in this case Pitt's Sonny Hayes – and the suspicious, arrogant wet-behind-the-ears reluctant protégé – Idris' Joshua Pearce – who seems to care more about his social media profile than actually winning. Cervantes obviously brings driver-for-hire Hayes in to force his rookie driver to grow up. Needless to say, that strategy comes with all the tension to be expected. And it doesn't just exist with Pearce. Hayes' arrival causes tension within the organization, especially after Cervantes informs its members that Hayes is auditioning them to see if he wants to join as opposed to the other way around. It's not difficult to predict where this will head. It's familiar ground for director Kosinski, who helmed 'Top Gun: Maverick,' but like any film with these plot points it's a matter of execution. His direction mixed with technology provides the experience. But with Pitt and Idris he has performers who deliver in spades to take it beyond a film completely reliant on the thrills rather than the narrative. Yes, it can be predictable and even cliché, but those elements can easily be forgiven given the overall package. It's a thrill ride, but Pitt easing into a role that requires wisdom rather than smarm and charm is something to relish and in Idris it's not difficult to see he's been mentioned as someone who could play a recast Black Panther. In the case of 'F1: The Movie,' strap in and just enjoy the ride on the biggest screen possible with a premium audio system. George M. Thomas covers a myriad of things including sports and pop culture, but mostly sports, he thinks, for the Beacon Journal. Movie: 'F1: The Movie' Cast: Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon Directed by: Joseph Kosinski Running time: 2 hours 35 minutes Rated: PG-13 for strong language, and action. Grade: B This article originally appeared on Akron Beacon Journal: See 'F1' on the biggest screen possible with premium audio
