Xabi Alonso could grant 18-year-old Real Madrid starlet opportunity in La Liga debut

Yahoo3 days ago
Real Madrid are trying to get back up to speed in double-quick time as they prepare for their La Liga opener against Osasuna on Tuesday. Los Blancos have had just one preseason friendly, and will only have been in preseason for 19 days when they take to the pitch against Los Rojillo.
To add to Xabi Alonso's problems, he is fast running out of options in midfield. Jude Bellingham has been ruled out long-term, while Eduardo Camavinga will not be available for their opener, and Diario AS explain that Fede Valverde is battling fitness issues too.
It leaves Alonso with only Dani Ceballos, Aurelien Tchouameni, Arda Guler and Franco Mastantuono as fit options in midfield. Alonso has also been experimenting with David Alaba as a screen in front of the defence too.

The Madrid-based daily go on to say that it could open the door to Thiago Pitarch. The 18-year-old midfielder has been part of their preseason, and against WSG Tirol on Tuesday, Pitarch replaced Kylian Mbappe for the final seven minutes. Playing on the left side of a central midfield three, it is said that Pitarch could have a role this season.
He did well in his small showing, pressing well without the ball, and linking play well in possession. Speaking to the club media, he described himself as a midfielder with 'fight', who racks up the miles with 'technical quality'. This comes off the back of a behind closed doors friendly against Leganes in which Pitarch got on the scoresheet.
Pitarch could be in the squad for Osasuna clash
On top of their midfield injuries, Endrick Felipe and Ferland Mendy are injured, while Antonio Rudiger is suspended against Osasuna. All of which paves the way for Pitarch to feature in the squad on Tuesday – Alonso will no doubt want a natural option in midfield at least on the bench to be able to call on.

USA's Johnny Cardoso Makes Atletico Madrid Debut in Tough Loss to Espanyol

LaLiga USA's Johnny Cardoso Makes Atletico Madrid Debut in Tough Loss to Espanyol Published Aug. 17, 2025 11:34 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link U.S. men's national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso made his debut for Atlético Madrid, but the team conceded two late goals to lose its LaLiga season opener to Espanyol. Despite debuting most of its new signings, Atleti lost its Spanish league opening match for the first-ever time under coach Diego Simeone. Host Espanyol's 2-1 win on Sunday was Atletico's first opening defeat since Simeone took over in late 2011. It hadn't previously lost an opening league game since 2009. Along with Cardoso, Simeone started the match with five of the club's new signings for the season — Alex Baena, Thiago Almada, David Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri. Giacomo Raspadori also made his debut coming off the bench in the second half. Cardoso, 23, has 20 international appearances for the U.S. men's team. He is expected to be in the mix for USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino, a former player for Espanyol, was in attendance at Sunday's match. Atletico took the lead with Julian Alvarez's free kick in the 37th minute but conceded goals by Miguel Rubio in the 73rd and Pere Milla in the 84th. "It happens," Simeone said. "The result hurts, but it's going to make us improve and grow. I'm left with all the good things the team did." Last season, Atletico only twice lost a league match that it was leading. "We played a very good first half and we had the match under control in the second," Atletico midfielder Koke said. "But after their first goal they turned things around." Barcelona began the defense of its Spanish league title with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday. Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday. Reporting by The Associated Press. German Cup: Ten Hag makes successful debut with Bayer Leverkusen and Bielefeld upsets Bremen

BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ernest Poku, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. 'Of course it needs time, you could see not every action worked out,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of the changes. 'But we saw today that we've got interesting young players. Ibrahim Maza did well and showed his qualities between the lines. And that's why it will take a little time, but we still have a good team.' The match was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Bielefeld does it again American forward Isaiah Young struck in the final minutes to fire last season's beaten finalist Arminia Bielefeld into the second round with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga side's Leonardo Bittencourt was sent off in the 54th and Bielefeld pushed hard for the winner. Young made his entrance in the 79th and sent the home fans wild when he tucked the ball inside the left post in the third minute of stoppage time. Bielefeld, then playing in the third division, knocked out a host of Bundesliga clubs — including Bremen — on its way to the final in May, when Stuttgart proved too strong. Stuttgart's title defense won't start till later this month as it's playing Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on Saturday. Also on Friday, Union Berlin routed fourth-tier side Gütersloh 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. ___ AP soccer: Ciarán Fahey, The Associated Press

4-3-3 Real Madrid Predicted Lineup Vs Osasuna

Real Madrid will entertain Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday night as they look to earn a good result in their La Liga season opener. Los Blancos managed to secure a dominant 4-0 win over WSG Tirol recently, which should keep them in good spirits ahead of this game. Xabi Alonso will opt for the 4-3-3 formation and is expected to name a strong first team for this clash. Kylian Mbappe will once again lead the line for the Madrid giants up top. 4-3-3 Real Madrid Predicted Lineup To Face Osasuna Defence Thibaut Coutois will feature in between the sticks for Real Madrid after he kept a clean sheet in his last outing. Dean Huijsen will operate alongside Eder Militao at the heart of Alonso's defence as they look to keep things solid at the back during the 90 minutes. Trent Alexander-Arnold will be named as the right-back while Alvaro Carreras hopes to impress on the other side as the left-back. Both of them will get the license to go forward and express themselves in the Osasuna half. David Alaba and Fran Garcia will provide cover for the defensive positions on the bench. INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA – AUGUST 12: Xabi Alonso, Head Coach of Real Madrid talks with his players during a drinks break during the pre-season friendly match between WSG Tirol and Real Madrid CF at Tivoli Stadion Tirol on August 12, 2025 in Innsbruck, Austria. (Photo by) Midfield Alonso could name a midfield three of Dani Ceballos, Aurelien Tchouameni and Arda Guler. The talented trio would have to retain possession well at the centre of the park and engineer some inviting chances for their teammates in the final third. Eduardo Camavinga is a major doubt for this game. Attack Vinicius Jr. will try to impress on the left flank while Brahim Diaz hopes to catch the eye as the right-sided wide player. Both of them would look to get in behind the opponent's backline at every chance they get. Kylian Mbappe will spearhead Real Madrid's attack in the final third. He would be eager to get his season off to a good start by finding the back of the net versus Osasuna this Tuesday night. Endrick will be in a race against time to be ready for this game. However, Rodrygo and Gonzalo Garcia will be available for selection on the bench and might come on to make an impact in the latter stages of the game if Los Blancos are in need of a goal by then.
