Used car sales resilient, with only a slight decline in April

TimesLIVE14-05-2025

'This trend speaks to the ongoing strength of the used car arena as consumers seek reliable, well-priced options in a changing economic landscape.'
While the Ranger topped the model chart, Toyota led the pack at brand level, shifting 5,150 units in April. Volkswagen followed with 4,034, while Ford came in third with 3,151. Interestingly, the Ranger was Ford's only representative in the top 10, whereas Toyota claimed four spots — more than any other brand.
All three of the leading brands posted YoY growth, but also recorded MoM declines. Toyota was up 4% YoY and down 1% MoM. Volkswagen had the smallest YoY increase (+3%) but the biggest MoM fall (-6%). Ford enjoyed the strongest YoY growth (+7%) but also saw a 2% MoM drop. Among the top 10, only Kia bucked the trend with a +6% MoM rise while Suzuki held steady. Suzuki also had the biggest YoY surge, growing by 15%.
In raw numbers, the Ford Ranger led April's used car sales with 1,724 units. It was followed by the Toyota Hilux (1,435 units) and the Polo Vivo (1,159 units). At a variant level, the Polo Vivo 1.4 remained the country's best-selling used model, clocking in 923 sales. Its turbocharged sibling the Polo 1.0 TSI came in second with 707 units. Rounding out the list were the Hilux 2.8 GD-6 (634), the Ranger XL (539) and the Hilux 2.4 GD-6.

China's rare earth export curbs hit Europe's car industry

BMW has deployed a magnet-free electric motor for its latest generation of electric cars, but still requires rare earths for smaller motors powering components such as windshield wipers or car window rollers. German carmaker Volkswagen said it is not seeing any shortages now. China's slow pace of easing its critical mineral export controls has become a focus of Trump's criticism of Beijing, which he says has violated the truce reached last month to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Trump has sought to redefine the US' trading relationship with its biggest economic rival by imposing steep tariffs on billions of dollars of imported goods in hopes of narrowing a trade deficit and bringing back lost manufacturing. Trump imposed tariffs of 145% against China only to scale them back after a sell-off in stock, bond and currency markets over the sweeping nature of the levies. China has responded with its own tariffs and is leveraging its dominance in key supply chains to persuade Trump to back down. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to talk this week to try to iron out their differences and the export curbs are expected to be high on the agenda. In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump said Xi is 'VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH', highlighting the fragility of the deal.

Automotive angst as China's critical minerals export curbs take hold

Frank Fannon, a minerals industry consultant and former US assistant secretary of state for energy resources during Trump's first term, said the global disruptions are not shocking to those paying attention. 'I don't think anyone should be surprised how this is playing out. We have a production challenge (in the US) and we need to leverage our whole of government approach to secure resources and ramp up domestic capability as soon as possible. The time horizon to do this was yesterday,' Fannon said. Diplomats, carmakers and other executives from India, Japan and Europe were urgently seeking meetings with Beijing officials to push for faster approval of rare earth magnet exports, sources told Reuters, as shortages threatened to halt global supply chains. A business delegation from Japan will visit Beijing this month to meet the ministry of commerce over the curbs, and European diplomats from countries with big car industries have also sought "emergency" meetings with Chinese officials in recent weeks, Reuters reported. India, where Bajaj Auto warned further delays in securing the supply of rare earth magnets from China could "seriously impact" electric vehicle production, is organising a trip for car executives in the next two to three weeks. Last month the head of the trade group representing General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and other major carmakers raised similar concerns in a letter to the Trump administration. "Without reliable access to the elements and magnets, automotive suppliers will be unable to produce critical automotive components, including automatic transmissions, throttle bodies, alternators, motors, sensors, seat belts, speakers, lights, motors, power steering, and cameras," the Alliance for Automotive Innovation wrote in the letter.
