Girlguides announce 72 new badges in thrifting, rescuing bees and 'fandoms'
Girlguiding has unveiled 72 new badges its members can work towards, in one of the largest updates in the organisation's 115-year history.
The badges, which were co-designed by more than 20,000 girls and volunteers, will be rolled out to members aged four to 18, across Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers groups.
Different badges can be earned by different groups and range from skills-building challenges to encouraging wellness and knowing oneself.
Rainbows, who make up the youngest Girlguiding group, can earn a "Bee Rescuer" badge for helping the environment as well as a "My Thoughts" badge, which encourages children to share how they're feeling.
Brownies have reinvented the old "Hostess" badge, changing its name to "Celebrations", which is won by hosting a party and providing food and decorations.
While Guides are being encouraged to upcycle to earn a '"Thrift" badge and explore wellness through writing to earn the "Journaling" badge.
The new "Fandom" badge can be rewarded to Rangers who share their passion and connect with fellow fans of popstars like Taylor Swift or the Harry Potter series.
A youth panel made up of 30 girls aged between 12 to 18 and seven partners, including The Royal Horticultural Society and the Children's Book Project helped develop the ideas seen on the badges.
Amanda Azeez, acting chief executive of Girlguiding, said the launch of the new badges marked a "huge moment" for the orgaisation.
She added: "They've been designed by girls, for girls – which is so important to make sure we are staying relevant to girls' wants and needs.
"The response from girls and volunteers during the consultation process was incredible and really inspiring.
"There's something for everyone among the new badges and I'm looking forward to seeing the impact these activities have on girls, building their confidence and helping them know they can do anything."
Joining the organisation as ambassador to launch the project, broadcaster and presenter Angellica Bell said she wants to encourage girls to tackle the many challenges they face.
She said: "I know first-hand just how important it is for girls to have activities outside of school to educate but also have fun.
"Girlguiding offers a safe and welcoming space for all girls, and I am so impressed by the work they do to build girls' confidence and wellbeing, whilst tackling important issues impacting their lives such as online harm, sexism and misogyny.
"In a world where the voices of girls and young women are not always fairly heard, I am proud to stand alongside Girlguiding and will be using my voice to speak up for equality and to show that girls can do anything.'

Manhattan Transfer: Marvel's Webbed Wonder becomes a Weegie
It's a long title, but it sure is catchy. Meanwhile, local cinephiles have been flocking to the movie location, near Central Station, to watch Glesga being transformed into New York. Diary correspondent Gary Hunt was passing the lights-camera-action and overheard a bunch of American tourists trying to guess the movie being made. 'They're filming Spiderman,' reported Gary to the gang. 'Really?!' said one of them, clearly surprised that he'd flown all the way from the States to witness such a spectacle. 'Yup,' grinned Gary, adding: 'Welcome to the USA, pal. Please enjoy your stay.' Biting humour When Frank Brewster worked in the building trade an apprentice arrived on site, and he was pure greetin' with the toothache. Between moans and groans he revealed that the offending molar was being yanked the following day. He was understandably nervous about the procedure, so another workman said to him in emollient tones: 'Dinnae you worry, son. It's all very scientific. The dentist chappy drags a rusty auld hammer frae the Govan shipyards intae the surgery. Then… big swing. Boom! Nae mare toothache.' The poor apprentice nearly fainted. Though it wasn't the toothache that almost knocked him flat. Child's play Exasperated parent Bev McNeil says: 'I love it when my kids sigh. But I haven't done anything interesting with my life.' 'You were in the Brownies,' noted her helpful chum. 'Oh, yeah,' nodded the first girl. 'But do I have to admit on the form that I only went twice?' Vegging out Oh, the Glesga banter! Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes says 'I'm not anti-Jewish' over Gaza stance
The 84-year-old, who is herself Jewish, branded critics "chickens*** people". Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes has defended her pleas for peace in Gaza after calls she should be stripped of her OBE. The Campaign Against Antisemitism group claims the actress, who is Jewish, should lose a gong she received in 2002 and a Bafta she won in 1993. The group accused her of spreading 'racist bilge' after she compared the Israeli occupation of Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust. The actress, who is performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, said: "I have every right to be an OBE. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I'm very proud of my OBE and I think I deserved it, and I'd be sad if it was taken away. "But I don't think it's seriously going to happen. 'I would not like to have it taken away because it would imply the government agrees that I shouldn't be an OBE.' Margoyles, 84, has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and its role in the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. She added: 'I'm not anti-Semitic, I'm anti-killing children. "But I am also criticising the Jewish people in the UK, the community that I belong to, which is not coming out in support of me. "I just want people not to kill each other.'
