When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander steps onto the court, there's a quiet intensity that mirrors a familiar figure from NBA lore. With a scoring title, MVP trophy, and a deep playoff run under his belt, the Oklahoma City Thunder star has risen to the top of the league.
But behind the accolades lies a poignant truth—SGA never got to meet his basketball idol,
Kobe Bryant
. And now, in the 2025 NBA Finals, he's doing everything he can to honor that legacy, one game at a time.
From idol to inspiration: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander walks the path Kobe Bryant paved
Before Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Finals tipped off in Oklahoma City,
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
spoke candidly about the player who shaped his game from afar. 'Probably my favorite player of all time. I never had the chance to meet him,' SGA said on Saturday, referencing the late
Kobe Bryant
.
'His influence has gone through the roof, and his legacy will be remembered forever.'

he two never crossed paths. Back in 2018–2019, during Shai's rookie season, Kobe was still alive, but Gilgeous-Alexander was just emerging in the league. When Bryant tragically passed away in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, SGA was entering his sophomore season, on the rise but still in the early stages of his NBA journey.
Despite never meeting, their games echo one another. Over two decades, Kobe averaged 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. In comparison, through seven seasons, Shai is putting up 24.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists—eerily close numbers. His polished midrange game, foul-drawing craft, and obsessive work ethic have led teammates and fans alike to see the shades of Kobe in his play.
'There are a lot of similarities there,' Thunder teammate Jalen Williams said during media availability on Saturday.
'If you are really paying attention to basketball & watch the way he plays. He can pick certain aspects of [Kobe's] game and add his own touch to it.'
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander channels
Mamba mentality
as Oklahoma City Thunder chase the NBA title
On Thursday night in Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander delivered one of his best postseason performances yet, dropping 38 points, five rebounds, and five assists in Game 1. But the Thunder's hopes were dashed by a buzzer-beating dagger from Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton.
'It happened so fast,' SGA said postgame. 'He got down doing right, pulled up from the middle, and knocked down the shot. I don't know, it didn't feel like anything crazy. He just made a play with time winding down.'
With the Pacers now up 1–0 in the series and Game 2 still set to take place at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City before the series shifts to Indiana, Oklahoma City faces a daunting challenge. Yet, the kind of adversity demands the 'Mamba Mentality'—the same mindset Shai has tried to embody his entire career.
His stats this season are Kobe-esque: 32.7 points per game (led the league), MVP and Western Conference Finals MVP honors, and 72 straight games scoring 20 or more. He's four wins from completing a feat not achieved since
Shaquille O'Neal
in 2000—winning a scoring title and NBA championship in the same season.
The spirit of Kobe isn't just alive in highlight reels. It's active—alive—in the smooth rhythm of SGA's footwork, in his patient fadeaways, and in his drive for greatness.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander may never have spoken to Kobe Bryant, but through his style, grit, and ambition, he's building a legacy that reflects the very player who inspired it all. 'Hopefully I'm somewhere close to that as a basketball player one day,' he said. The who was Kobe, the where is Oklahoma City, and the when… is right now.

Al Pacino recalls turning down ‘Star Wars' role, reveals why he said no

Academy Award winner Al Pacino recently opened up about turning down a role in Star Wars and explained why he was hesitant to join the now-iconic franchise. 'I said, 'I think I'm in the mood to make Harrison Ford a career,'' Pacino joked, recalling a visit to the San Francisco headquarters of American Zoetrope—the production company founded by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas—according to Deadline. 'They were making this in the late '60s. They were real idealists coming into the '70s, with great films being made all over the world,' Pacino said. 'It was a wonderful place—I actually visited the building before I did The Godfather with them.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo As for why he passed on Star Wars, Pacino admitted the script didn't click with him. 'I loved their work, but I was doing a Broadway show at the time, and they handed me this script. I didn't understand it. I thought I must be out of space myself,' he said. 'So I sent it to my friend and mentor, Charlie Loughton. I asked, 'What do you make of this?' He was pretty wise and said, 'I don't get it, Al. I don't know.' And I said, 'Well, I don't either—what are we going to do?' They offered me a fortune, but I just couldn't do it. I can't play something if I don't speak the language.' Live Events Pacino to Star in Hostage Thriller 'Dead Man's Wire' Meanwhile, Pacino is set to headline the upcoming hostage thriller Dead Man's Wire, directed by Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant. According to Deadline, the film is based on the true story of a harrowing 1977 hostage situation that gripped the world. The screenplay, written by Austin Kolodney, features a star-studded cast including Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Myha'la, Cary Elwes, and Colman Domingo. The plot centers on events from February 8, 1977, when Anthony G. 'Tony' Kiritsis, a 44-year-old man, stormed into the office of Richard O. Hall, president of Meridian Mortgage Company, and took him hostage. Wielding a sawed-off shotgun rigged to his own neck with a 'dead man's wire,' Tony demanded $5 million, immunity from prosecution, and a personal apology from the Hall family, whom he accused of cheating him out of money. Van Sant—best known for Good Will Hunting and Milk—will bring the tense standoff to the screen in what will be his first collaboration with Pacino. Pacino, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Scent of a Woman, was last seen in Knox Goes Away.

Eagles double down on Saquon Barkley – Jalen Hurts takes backseat as Philly commits to run-first era

Eagles double down on Saquon Barkley (Image via Getty) The Philadelphia Eagles are set to double down on their ground-and-pound identity in the 2025 NFL season, with Saquon Barkley poised to retain a central role in the offense. Following a career-best 2024 campaign, Barkley's dominance has prompted the team to fully commit to a run-first philosophy, anchored by one of the league's most formidable offensive lines. From balance to brute force – How Saquon Barkley changed the playbook The shift began mid-season in 2024, as the Eagles transitioned from a more balanced scheme to one that heavily leaned on Barkley's explosive playmaking. The results were undeniable, Barkley finished with over 2,000 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, and led the NFL in 10+ yard runs. His consistency and big-play ability transformed the offense's rhythm and reliability. Strategic pivot fueled by elite O-line and Barkley's brilliance This organizational change was fueled by a strategic realignment. NFL analyst Greg Cosell pointed out how the franchise evolved to center its offense around Barkley's strengths. "That's the way they started out a year ago... then they made an organizational decision that we need to give the ball to Saquon Barkley and have him run behind the best run-blocking O-line in football." While Jalen Hurts remains a vital component under center, the quarterback himself acknowledged that the focus is firmly on winning, regardless of who racks up the stats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Walgreens Keeps Quiet About This '9 Pills for $7' Generic Cialis Deal Friday Plans Get Offer Undo "You know it doesn't matter how we win... Kellen Moore banks on Barkley to drive 2025 offense Hurts' ability to adapt to this shift not only reflects his leadership but also underscores the team's unified culture. With offensive coordinator Kellen Moore now at the helm, the plan is to continue building on last year's success by keeping the ground game at the heart of the system. "Saquon is a premier running back, first and foremost. We're really excited about his ability to run the football." With the offensive line still intact and Barkley in peak form, the Eagles' commitment to the run game could make them one of the most dangerous offenses in 2025.
