Increased police patrols for Spalding town centre
More police officers are to patrol Spalding town centre in the coming weeks as part of a trial to reduce anti-social and criminal activity, South Holland District Council has said.The authority and the Spalding Town Board said they had committed £40,000 to support a new hotspot policing programme.The pilot scheme would initially run for a three-month period and was being funded through the government's Plan for Neighbourhoods initiative, the council said.Ensuring that Spalding was a safe and a welcoming place for its residents was a "key priority", a spokesperson said.
The initiative aimed to improve public confidence through a series of additional high-visibility police patrols in specific areas of the town centre, they added.Patrols would run from the bus station through Hall Place, Red Lion Street and the Market Place, as far as Ayscoughfee Hall and Gardens, targeting spots identified by residents and authorities as being more common for anti-social or criminal activity.The initiative would be delivered in partnership with Lincolnshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, the council said.Councillor Nick Worth, leader of South Holland District Council, said: "Ensuring that Spalding is a safe and welcoming places for its residents, businesses and visitors is a key priority for the council."We are delighted to support this pilot programme to help make that happen."Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

Bizarre moment burglar tells cops ‘I'm PROUD of you' after being caught hiding in ditch claiming ‘I enjoy the chase'
A BUNGLING burglar who broke into a business and fled the scene stunned officers by praising their work, saying, "I'm proud of you." Dwayne Pillin, 40, smashed his way into a commercial property in Horncastle, Lincolnshire and stole several items in the early hours of Sunday. 5 5 5 Officers from Lincolnshire Police responded swiftly after an alarm was triggered, discovering a smashed window and signs of a break-in. Armed units, along with police dog Shadow, launched a search of the surrounding area. Pillin had made a run for it but didn't get far. Shadow managed to sniff him out in a nearby ditch, where the suspect was found lying low. Body-worn camera footage shows the moment officers close in through tall grass before Pillin gives himself up. But instead of resisting or staying silent, he bizarrely congratulated the team. "Well done, guys… well done," he said. "You did a good effort there, didn't you guys. "I'm proud of you, to be fair, and I don't like saying that to a police officer." The suspect continued his rambling praise as he was arrested, even admitting: "I knew I should have gone a bit further straight away. "I enjoy the chase as well though, to be fair. "You know it's kept you busy, kept me busy." Despite claiming he could have escaped if he really wanted to, he told officers he was simply "out for an adventure" that morning. Lincolnshire Police later shared the footage on social media, saying: 'We always appreciate it when the public takes a moment to thank our officers — it means a lot. "But it's especially memorable when the thanks come from the offenders themselves… particularly just after being caught!' They added that while Pillin claimed he could outrun the dog, he had no choice but to give up once Shadow found him in hiding. Pillin, of Lincoln Road, Horncastle, was charged with burglary. He appeared at Lincoln Magistrates ' Court the following day, Monday 9 June, where he was handed a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. A police spokesperson said: 'While it's not every day we're thanked by the people we arrest, our officers remained professional throughout and did a brilliant job tracking down and detaining the suspect.' The video has since drawn widespread attention online, with social media users both amused and baffled by Pillin's strange reaction. Commenters praised the police dog's impressive tracking skills, with one person writing: 'Best laugh today. Outrun a PD, think not. "Well done PD Shadow and handler. It was always a done deal that Shadow would come out on top. "It was an adventure for Shadow that's for sure.' Another added: 'Having a bit of an adventure! Well done PD Shadow and all your colleagues for keeping us all safe.' Police confirmed the stolen items were recovered, and the business involved has since been secured. 5 5

Lincolnshire cat owner horrified after pet 'shaved in attack'
A cat owner has been left shocked after her beloved pet returned home with missing fur, which is believed to have been Field, who lives in Gosberton, near Spalding in Lincolnshire, said she found her cat, Bertie, was missing a "big lump of fur from his side" on 7 Field said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Someone must have held him down to do it and it's just a horrible, horrible feeling. It's disgraceful."Lincolnshire Police said it would encourage anyone who is aware of any incidents to report them to the force and to the RSPCA. Mrs Field said the attack on her cat, which is three years old, had left the animal "very, very subdued" and needing to be "persuaded to come for food".She said: "He didn't want to come near anybody, which is very out of character because he normally comes, jumps on my lap and loves a cuddle."It felt like he was shying away from everyone in case they were going to hurt him."Mrs Field also said that she thought more than one person would have been involved because her pet would have "wiggled and run away if he wasn't held down".Similar attacks were reported on other pets in Pinchbeck, near Spalding, and Kirton, near Boston, in February. Up to 20 people involved in Spalding street brawl
Armed police were deployed to Spalding on Friday following reports that a crowd of people had threatened a man and chased him out of a car that was then Police said they received a report at 22:42 BST that the victim had been chased into a property in Station Street while being threatened with weapons.
