Hawks respond to Harley Reid rumour as fresh details emerge
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has provided some insight on whether the Hawks really are 'obsessed' with Harley Reid.
Reports earlier this week stated the Hawks were 'obsessed' with Reid and now the Hawks coach has had his say.

'I saw the word obsessed and I went in the next day and I said to a couple of list guys, 'Are we obsessed with Harley Reid?' and then I saw some of the numbers that were getting thrown up and I said 'What is happening here?' And they're like 'just don't even read the papers',' Mitchell said on SEN's Fireball this morning.
'He's obviously a good player but he's contracted to West Coast and he's having a pretty good year. A bit like 'Daysy' getting sat on in his first game back, it's a bit like, 'oh', I mean this 20-year-old is getting sat on most weeks now. He's a good player.'

Earlier this week, AFL Media's Cal Twomey reported that the Eagles have put what would be 'the biggest deal in AFL history' to the star youngster, keeping him at West Coast through to the end of 2037 with its value totalling over $20 million.
Channel 7's Ryan Daniels said the deal was far more eye-watering with Reid potentially set to pocket $2.2m per season for 11 years.
'The proposed deal would be for two years initially, with an option for Harley to extend that to 11 years, until the end of 2037, and be worth around $2.2 million per season. The total number would likely be north of $24 million,' Daniels said.
Reid's manager, Nick Gieschen, has recently arrived in WA and attempted to downplay the reported offer.
'I don't think anyone is ready to be the highest-paid player in the comp,' Gieschen said.
'But nah, we're working through it. Nothing's finalised. We're in negotiations but we'll take every day as it comes.
'Harley is enjoying his time here and like I said before, we're talking about what the future looks like. We're having discussions with West Coast and we'll go from there.
'Nothing in concrete, we're just talking at the moment and we'll see where we get to.'
With easily the biggest deal ever seen in AFL history reportedly on the table, it's tough bidding for any Victorian clubs to swoop in and lure him away.
'If I'm really honest I actually don't know. I don't have anything to do with the financial stuff. It doesn't seem right for us. At some point that's going to happen isn't it? Whether it's in this CBA or the next one, but the money in the game continues to go up,' Mitchell said.

'The average salary continues to be higher and higher and higher and as they should be. Everyone wants to play the game and the spectacle of what we're putting on at the moment is pretty good. I think the players deserve what they're getting, it's just how you attribute that.
'With our midfield as an example, being pretty workman-like and making sure that we're consistent across the board. If you're putting $2 million into one player, that makes it a little bit more difficult of course.'
As rumours surrounding Reid's future continue to swirl, Eagles skipper Liam Duggan believes the young star will stick with the club.
'I'm really eager for Harley to sign. I mean, he's going to be paid very well regardless of where it is, and he's going to get a long-term deal regardless of where it is,' he said on Triple M.
'But all I can speak of at the moment is that his investment in what we're going after at the moment is second to none.
'He has been so dialled into what we're going after as a footy club at the moment, he's been very vocal in that amongst the group, the way he's playing, you can see that in the way that he's playing, and I think our supporters would be able to see that in the way that he's going about his footy right now.'

AFL great accused of assaulting woman
AFL great Nicky Winmar has appeared in court after he was charged over the alleged assault of a woman. Neil Elvis 'Nicky' Winmar, 59, beamed into the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with two counts of assault and one count of choking, strangling or suffocating a person without lawful excuse. According to charge sheets released by the court, police allege the incident occurred on July 18. The two-time All Australian footballer appeared wearing a blue jumper and glasses and spoke only to confirm he could see and hear the court. His lawyer, Tessa Theocharous, told the court Mr Winmar was on bail for the allegations, with the matter listed for a bail review. Mr Winmar has not been required to enter pleas. 'He has only fairly recently been placed on the (bail) program,' she said. 'There is a further appointment today at court, Your Honour, so that a more fulsome plan can be prepared and Mr Winmar can engage with that.' An application to revoke Mr Winmar's bail was withdrawn by Victoria Police and his bail was extended until his next court date on August 28. The AFL Hall of Fame inductee had a twelve-season career with St Kilda between 1987 and 1998, twice winning the club's best and fairest award. The Indigenous footballer's iconic stand against racist abuse during the 1993 season was immortalised in bronze outside Optus Stadium in Perth six years ago. The Western Australian lifted his jumper and pointed at his torso, declaring 'I'm black and I'm proud' after receiving abuse from Collingwood fans at Victoria Park.

Shocking twist emerges in Giants' end-of-season party scandal as pub to face independent hearing
Greater Western Sydney 's end-of-season party scandal has taken a fresh twist with the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel facing sanctions for an alleged breach. A probe by local authorities has uncovered vulgar new details by the players' behaviour at the infamous event. The theme of the party was 'troubled couples', which saw players dress up as controversial figures and act out skits. Six players were suspended for a combined 14 matches and a further seven fined for a total of $35,000 for the wild night out. Now, the pub where the party took place is in the firing line and could be stripped of its licence. 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary, who broke the initial story last year, revealed the Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) are ordering the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel to face an independent hearing for allowing the chaos to unfold on its premises. 'Giants players dressed in the theme of troubled couples peforming skits relating to each pairing, including re-enacting the September 11 attacks and sex acts,' Cleary said. 'Alarming CCTV showed players skolling warm beer and vomiting, as well as simulating masturbation, nudity, fornication with blow-up dolls and players pouring their own alcohol.' While it was a private function, some acts were seen by patrons, including from the rooftop and verandah, Cleary added. The hearing is expected to be heard in the coming months, but there will be no further punishment for the players involved. 'The Wooloomoo Bay Hotel, which is owned by prominent Sydney family — The Laundy Hotel Group will be grilled and CCTV is expected to be shown,' Cleary said. 'At worst the pub could be stripped of its licence and staff members removed from the industyr. 'The Giants and AFL won't take this any further and feel the matter is closed. 'It's important to note the Giants' own investigations cleared the players of any illegal activity. 'And NSW Police hasn't been and isn't involved.' The Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) released a statement confirming their investigation has been completed. 'The investigation considered alleged indecent conduct on the premises and failure by the venue to take reasonable steps to prevent behaviour likely to encourage the misuse and abuse of alcohol,' the statement read. 'L&GNSW determined that the alleged breaches warranted referral to the NSW Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority which will now consider two disciplinary complaints. 'L&GNSW is committed to holding licensed venues accountable and reminds operators that serious penalties may apply for breaches of liquor laws, licence conditions or failures in the responsible service of alcohol.' Last year, AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said some of the skits were 'completely unacceptable' and totally at odds with the codes values. He revealed their investigation found Josh Fahey dressed up as ex-NRL player Jarryd Hayne, who spent time in jail before having rape charges dropped, and Jake Riccardi went as a taxi driver. 'In the course of a skit, Fahey simulated inappropriate acts on a sex doll,' Dillon said at the time. 'Riccardi was not involved in that part of the skit. 'Toby McMullin and Cooper Hamilton simulated the September 11 attack on the World Trade Centre in costume related to that event. 'Harvey Thomas dressed as a particular professional sportsman and Joe Fonti as a girl acting inappropriately during their skit. 'Connor Idun and Lachie Whitfield enacted a scene from the Django Unchained, characterising slavery.'

Are banks getting tighter with frequent flyer bonus point offers?

What's the best way to get the most points? This is an interesting observation and my gut instinct tells me you may be correct. Ultimately the best way to check is to look at some historical data of what banks have offered. The team at compares many credit cards on the market and crunched the data on bonus points offers over the past six years. Contrary to my initial thoughts, it wasn't all doom and gloom. Looking at Qantas earning credit cards, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black, lowest bonus points offered was 90,000. Today, it sits at 130,000 points which is actually its peak offer. For a Velocity card, it's pretty much the same story. The American Express Velocity Platinum Card has fluctuated considerably over the six years however in 2019 it was offering 100,000 bonus points. In January of this year the same offer was available. It has since dropped back to 60,000. Bonus points may have passed their peak, but there are other benefits to being a card holder. Picture: American Express. Taylor Blackburn, personal finance specialist at Finder, explained while it may seem bonus offers have passed their peak, it isn't the case. 'Many of the points offers are cyclical and vary from month to month and year to year, but we are actually on an upswing of sorts. Bonus points are key, but not the only selection criteria.' Blackburn advises to consider the annual fee, earn rate and other features like lounge passes, insurance and purchase protection, not to mention that switching credit cards too often can impact your credit score. Tough times could be ahead The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has proposed changes that will impact credit cards starting mid-2026. The most relevant change is the RBA wanting to reduce the interchange fee. The interchange fee is what the merchant bank (the bank of the business where you are swiping your card) pays your credit card issuer every time you pay for something. Certain stores slap on a surcharge as a way to recoup some of the money lost when they pay the interchange fee. It may seem like a win, especially if surcharges disappear altogether, but it could become a problem for frequent flyer credit cards. We could see a shake up of frequent flyer programs in 2026. That's because banks typically points in bulk from airlines to then use as sign up bonuses and rewards. These points are partly funded by annual fees, however the real revenue comes from interest charges when you don't pay your statement in full every month and also, interchange fees. Reducing interchange fees could lead to not only a drop in bonus offers and points earned through spending on your credit card. In other news, Westpac is changing the points-earning rates on its range of Platinum and Black credit cards from 1 August. It is introducing a cap on monthly card spend that will earn points at the full rate. After a cardholder spends $5,000 in a statement cycle, the earn rate drops. As Finder research shows, offers are cyclical and change month to month. If you're not in a rush, I would hold out till you see a better offer.
