Shelbourne and Linfield could meet again in Conference League playoff with €4m at stake

Shelbourne
and Linfield are on course to meet in a
Uefa Conference League
playoff with the winner guaranteed €4 million in prize money for reaching the group stage.
Shelbourne already knocked Linfield out of the
Champions League
, in the first-round qualifier last month, 2-1 on aggregate, but David Healy's side recovered to beat Zalgiris from Lithuania and the NIFL Premiership holders are expected to see off Vikingur of the Faroe Islands.
Shels can still reach the Europa League group stage, if Joey O'Brien's squad overcome the odds and get past Croatian champions Rijeka. The League of Ireland champions travel to Croatia this week for the first leg on Wednesday before the second leg at Tolka Park on Wednesday week.
If they were to get through they would face either Greek side PAOK or Wolfsberger AC of Austria in the playoff round. If they are eliminated, they drop to the Conference League to play the winners of Linfield and Vikingur.

The north Dublin club confirmed that they will host a Europa or Conference League playoff at Tolka following their recent investment to improve stadium facilities.
With Richmond Park falling short of Uefa standards, St Pat's face the Ole Gunnar Solskjær-managed Besiktas at Tallaght Stadium this Thursday in the first leg of the Conference League third-round qualifier.
If Stephen Kenny's side pull off a win, they will face the winners of Lausanne (Switzerland) and Astana (Kazakhstan) in a playoff.
As it stands, three Dublin clubs remain on course for group stage football.
Shamrock Rovers could set up another all-island contest, against Larne, to reach the Conference League for the third time since 2022 but only if they overcome Ballkani (Kosovo). The first leg is at the Pristina City Stadium in the Kosovan capital on Thursday.
Last October, Rovers made light work of Larne, winning 4-1 in a Conference League tie at Windsor Park.
Larne, however, must beat Portuguese side Santa Clara to progress, with the first-leg at the Ballymena Showgrounds on Thursday before a seven-hour flight to Ponta Delgada for the second leg in the Azores on August 14th.
The Conference League playoffs take place on August 21st and 28th. Reaching the group stage guarantees each club over €4 million in prize money, with Rovers banking €6 million after qualifying for the knock-out stages last season.
Europa League playoff draw
Winners of Shelbourne v Rijeka (Croatia) play winners of PAOK (Greece) v Wolfsberger AC (Austria).
Uefa Conference League playoff draw
Losers of Shelbourne v Rijeka (Croatia) play winners of Linfield (Northern Ireland) v Vikingur (Faroe Islands).
Winners of Larne (Northern Ireland) v Santa Clara (Portugal) play winners of Ballkani (Kosovo) v Shamrock Rovers.
Winners of Lausanne (Switzerland) v Astana (Kazakhstan) play winners of St Patrick's Athletic v Besiktas (Turkey).

Camogie Extra Podcast: Ursula Jacob and Elaine Aylward preview All-Ireland senior final

In this week's episode of Camogie Extra, Ursula Jacob and Elaine Aylward join Jacqui Hurley and Rory O'Neill to preview another meeting of Cork and Galway in the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior final. Both panellists recall what it was like to play on the big day, with Ursula having memories of Wexford achieving a three in a row in 2012, the last county to do so ahead of Cork's bid for something similar on Sunday afternoon. Elaine spoke about the two-week build-up that often coincided with the Kilkenny men preparing for their big day. Cork "going all out for the three in a row" and how Galway will look to stop them was discussed, while an eye was cast towards Kerry and Offaly in the intermediate decider and the junior clash between Laois and Armagh.

James Maddison injury update as Tottenham star set to miss majority of season

Tottenham Hotspur's creative midfielder, James Maddison, is set to miss most of the season due to a severe knee injury. The England international encountered this setback during pre-season, and it has now been confirmed that he has torn his ACL and will need surgery. Last season, fellow Premier League player Rodri was sidelined for eight months following an ACL tear. The Manchester City star made his comeback towards the end of the season after being injured in an early season match against Arsenal. Maddison was representing Spurs in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle when he sustained the injury and had to be stretchered off. Thomas Frank confirmed that the injury was to the same knee which caused him to miss the team's Europa League final in May. "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee," Spurs said in a statement. "The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. "Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way." Frank said after the Newcastle game: "We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before." Maddison was seen leaving on crutches, and the Spurs boss elaborated on the tough situation. "Yeah, it's like in life and football, I think sometimes life and football can be brutal, but also sometimes very beautiful. So I think it was brutal in what happened to to Madders," he said. "It looks like a bad injury. Of course we don't know exactly the status on it. It didn't look good." The injury also puts Maddison's World Cup involvement in doubt. The seven-cap England international has yet to play for the national team since Thomas Tuchel took over in the dugout, but might have hoped a big season could have put him back in the manager's thoughts. Spurs will now need to decide whether to dip into the transfer market for a replacement. Morgan Gibbs-White and Ebere Eze have both been of interest in the past, while there have been suggestions they could move for Harvey Elliott as RB Leipzig weigh up a move for the Liverpool star. The injury news comes just one day after Spurs confirmed the departure of captain Son Heung-min. South Korea forward Son has moved to Los Angeles FC in a Major League Soccer record deal, worth roughly £19.5million.

Manchester United agree deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Benjamin Sesko after agreeing a deal worth up to £73.7million with RB Leipzig, the PA news agency understands. The talented 22-year-old striker has been the subject of a tug of a war as the Red Devils and Newcastle both attempted to bolster their attacks ahead of the new season. Sesko indicated to United that he favoured a move to them over the Magpies and PA understands they have now agreed a deal with Leipzig worth €76.5m plus a potential €8.5m in add-ons. The Slovenia international has been granted permission to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical and complete the move. United have transformed Ruben Amorim's attack (Adam Davy/PA) Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions last term and has long been on the Red Devils' radar, stretching back to his move from Domzale to RB Salzburg in 2019. Newcastle had made the first move this summer and reacted to seeing an initial bid rebuffed by making an improved approach worth a reported €82.5m plus €2.5m in add-ons. Ruben Amorim's Red Devils were waiting in the wings and followed with a rival proposal of €75m plus a potential €10m in add-ons. The terms were subsequently tweaked, with United paying slightly more as an initial fee as part of the deal in principle struck with Leipzig. Sesko is United's third attacking addition, following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha (pictured) and Bryan Mbeumo (Nick Potts/PA) Sesko is set to become the fourth signing of the summer as United look to hit back from finishing 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years – and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. Matheus Cunha joined from Wolves for £62.5m, while Bryan Mbeumo left Brentford for an initial £65m fee that could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. Teenage wing-back Diego Leon has also linked up with United after a deal was struck with Cerro Porteno in January.
