BJP, AAP clash over report on Chandni Chowk revamp ‘scam'

New Delhi: Delhi BJP on Sunday welcomed a govt report on the alleged scam in the Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan and demanded the dissolution of Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, along with a full audit of its 10 years of operations.

According to the report, the cost of redeveloping the 1.3km stretch— inaugurated in 2021 by former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal—swelled from an initial estimate of Rs 65.6 crore to Rs 145 crore.
The report stated that the initial cost for civil and electrical works, estimated at Rs. 27.8 crore, escalated nearly fourfold to Rs. 105.9 crore. Praveen Shankar Kapoor, Delhi BJP spokesperson and general secretary of Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch, alleged that for the past 25 years, Delhi's governance had been run by officers on deputation.
"These officers have always viewed Chandni Chowk only as a Mughal-era city, never understanding or appreciating its commercial identity. Ignoring reality, they repeatedly proposed plans to develop Chandni Chowk merely as a tourist centre, often persuading CMs to approve impractical schemes," he said in a statement.
After assuming office in 2015, AAP govt began formulating development and beautification projects for Chandni Chowk without consulting its residents or traders, Kapoor claimed.
In 2018–19, despite opposition from local trade bodies and Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch, the local MLA pushed through the redevelopment project prepared by bureaucrats and had it implemented by the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, he said.
Hitting back, AAP said: "The people of Delhi know very well that for the last 10 years, vigilance and ACB were under BJP's LG, and it was LG's duty to ensure that corrupt officers were punished. It was BJP's LG who was appointing officers to various positions. Opening enquiries into old cases only shows their incompetence."

No compromise on sustainable development: Minister Khandre

Bengaluru: The state government is committed to sustainable development that meets today's needs without compromising the interests of future generations, said Karnataka's Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment, Eshwar B. Khandre. Inaugurating the first conference of the Karnataka Forest, Wildlife, and Climate Change Foundation at a private hotel in Bengaluru, the minister stressed the importance of balancing modernization, economic progress, and environmental conservation. 'We must think about protecting natural resources, conserving energy, promoting reuse, and controlling carbon emissions while we pursue economic growth,' Khandre highlighted the impact of climate change and global warming on nature, adding that increasing green cover is the only viable solution. The minister revealed that Bengaluru's green cover is far below ideal levels — ideally, there should be seven trees per person, but the city has fewer than one tree for every seven people. With the city's population approaching 1.5 crore, Khandre warned against allowing Bengaluru to become a 'gas chamber' like Delhi. To address this, he has directed officials to study ways to expand green cover in the city. Plans include a new 153-acre biodiversity park at Madappanahalli near Yelahanka, costing Rs 250 crore, and converting unused HMT land into another large park through legal measures.'While Lalbagh and Cubbon Park were created over a century ago, Bengaluru hasn't seen a new major park in 150 years,' he said, urging corporate institutions to support these World Elephant Day, Khandre noted Karnataka's deep connection with elephants, from the grandeur of the Mysuru Dasara Jumbo Savari to human-wildlife conflict. 'Elephants have given the state both fame and fear,' he Force Chief Meenakshi Negi stated that the foundation aims to effectively utilize CSR and CER funds for forest and environmental conservation.

Students association demands rollback in AMU fee hike

Aligarh: The All India Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urging him to take action for immediately rolling back the hike in annual fees at AMU, saying it would deprive thousands of students from underprivileged families from securing higher education. In a statement on Tuesday, the national convenor of the Association Nasir Khehami said, 'The students have been courageously opposing what they see as an arbitrary, unjustified and exclusionary fee hike of up to 36-42 per cent imposed by the university administration.' 'For this session, the fee for some courses has increased by around 30-40 per cent. For example, the course fee was Rs 16,000 last year and has been raised to over Rs 22,000,' Khehami said. He said AMU Proctor Wasim Ali had confirmed that the university has increased fees between Rs 500 and Rs 1,500 for different courses, claiming it is mainly to improve the infrastructure and that it was a collective decision made by various committees. 'However, this explanation does not lessen the crushing burden on the students, many of whom come from socially backward classes, working-class families and economically weaker sections, and are already struggling to meet their daily expenses, including basic meals,' he said in the letter. AMU spokesman Omar Peerzada said the university was taking prompt steps to address the 'concerns of continuing students on issues relating to fee hike'. He said the university has issued a proforma via social media platforms for wider circulation, inviting suggestions from the continuing students (students currently pursuing courses) regarding the recent fee hike. In an official release, the AMU on Tuesday said that Prof M Asmer Beg, the convener of the recently appointed committee on fee hike issue and, has asked bona-fide students to submit suggestions on the fee hike issue by filing a proforma mentioning their demands. The letter also urged the government to order a probe into the alleged assault and excesses committed on the protestors at the Bab-e-Syed Gate on Friday, when they were allegedly dragged out from the dharna site when they were conducting a peaceful protest. The Association has in its letter alleged that since there is no elected students union at AMU since the past seven years any peaceful protest is gagged by the AMU authorities who have 'no accountability and transparency,' and there is a growing communication gap on the campus in the absence of democratic bodies within the campus.
