Lucknow: The Kannauj Forensic Science Laboratory has become the first laboratory in the state to receive the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System certification.
Naveen Arora, ADG Technical Services Headquarters, presented the certificate to DGP Rajeev Krishna on Friday.
This certification recognises the lab's commitment to maintain high standards in forensic examination, analysis, and support for law enforcement agencies, said Arora.
It also reflects the dedication and hard work of the Kannauj FSL staff under the guidance of the Technical Services Headquarters.
Arora said that for the last six months, efforts were made by the Kannauj FSL to strive for the certification. "All the parameters were followed, including upgraded equipment, proper storage facilities, staff services, patient sample collection facilities, facility maintenance, and environmental conditions.
Furthermore, it covers auditing of reagents, laboratory equipment, and consumables as well."
The ISO 9001:2015 certification underscores the lab's adherence to quality, transparency, impartiality, and scientific rigour in its operations. This certification not only enhances the operational framework of the Kannauj laboratory but also bolsters the credibility of scientific evidence presented in the judicial system, marking a significant advancement in the region's forensic capabilities.

State pushes jatropha, ethanol to boost green energy

1 2 Patna: With World Biofuel Day falling on Sunday, residents of the city may recall the late President A P J Abdul Kalam's convocation address at Patna University nearly two decades ago in which he urged the promotion of jatropha plantations and rural biofuel enterprises to meet Bihar's energy needs. Delivering his address at the city's S K Memorial Hall on Dec 30, 2005, Kalam recommended using "chour" land (wetlands) for jatropha cultivation. "Biofuel plants grown in 11 million hectares of wasteland can yield a revenue of Rs 20,000 crore a year and provide employment to over 12 million people, both for plantation and running the oil extraction units," he had said. Although Patna University scientists did not initiate a dedicated project to boost the agricultural production of this biofuel plant in the state, agricultural experts identified 13 districts as suitable for cultivation. Farmers in at least Purnia and Kaimur districts are already growing jatropha commercially, according to Patna University botany department head Birendra Prasad. Prasad added that jatropha, known in Hindi as 'Ratan jot', is among the best sources for biodiesel production. "Besides jatropha, other plants like maize and sugar cane are also being used for the production of ethanol. Growing such petro plants on a larger scale can boost the production of biofuels," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo Bihar currently operates 12 ethanol factories, producing a combined 5.65 billion litres, with 60% of output exported to southern states. By 2026, nine new ethanol plants are expected to be established in districts including Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Kaimur, Muzaffarpur, Barh, Jamui, Vaishali and Buxar, according to the state industries department. Recently, the state govt introduced the Bihar Biofuels Production Promotion (Amendment) Policy, 2025, aimed at increasing production of ethanol and compressed bio-gas (CBG) from organic waste materials such as agricultural residue and animal dung. The policy targets pollution reduction and a cleaner environment. Fittingly, the theme for this year's World Biofuel Day is "Biofuels: a sustainable pathway to net zero. " Environmentalist Mehta Nagendra Singh said the policy aligns with Bihar's goal of expanding renewable energy use and contributing to India's net-zero emissions targets. "The policy provides a framework to develop a sustainable biofuel sector in Bihar, attracting investment, creating economic opportunities, and promoting a greener environment," he said. Maha govt wants to create 1cr lakhpati didis: CM; hails Ladki Bahin

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government aims to create one crore "lakhpati didis" in the state as part of its women empowerment efforts, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday. "Lakhpati didi" is a term coined by the Union government for a self-help group (SHG) member who earns an annual household income of Rs 1 lakh or more. This income is calculated for at least four agricultural seasons and/or business cycles, with an average monthly income exceeding Rs 10,000. "Last year, we created 25 lakh lakhpati didis. This year, we want to add another 25 lakh. Our target is to make one crore lakhpati didis in Maharashtra. The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana is part of this push. Some people tried to create confusion by claiming the scheme will be stopped. We won't shut it. Instead, we will increase aid at the right time," the CM said. For example, men uploaded photos of motorbikes on the portal to claim benefits. We are removing such names from the beneficiaries' list," Fadnavi added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Maharashtra has the highest number of SHGs in the country, and malls will be set up in 10 districts where products made by them will be sold, the CM informed. "We have increased funding and revolving funds. Women have a much higher rate of loan repayment compared to men. In many schemes, men have not even repaid 50% of the loans," he said. Crediting women's support for the Mahayuti retaining power in the November 2024 assembly polls, the CM said "brothers should resolve to empower their sisters so they can protect themselves and their families". "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed the status of women through schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mudra (loans) and Lakhpati Didi. 60% of Mudra beneficiaries in the last 10 years have been women. Twenty-five crore families have been lifted out of poverty, thanks to the PM's schemes. He has brought women into the mainstream economy," Fadnavis said. There was a time when India's share in global trade was 35% and in world GDP was 30%, the CM pointed out. "Our downfall began when we stopped respecting women and got divided into castes. For India to become a developed nation again, we must take women along," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Metro railway introduces air cool chillers to save ground water in Kolkata

1 2 Kolkata: Metro Railway plans to introduce a modern alternative cooling system on the Blue Line to preserve groundwater in Kolkata. Of the metro line's 15 underground stations, the cooling system of 11 will be changed from traditional water-cooled chillers to air-cooled chillers. Bids have been invited for the Rs 150 crore project. Work orders will be placed after the evaluation of the tender. "Work will commence in 2026 and be completed by 2029," a Metro spokesperson said. He said the familiar scene of cooling towers outside metro stations is going to change forever, allowing Metro Railway to save 18 crore litres of groundwater consumption annually. This is the amount required to run the water-cooled chillers for making metro stations cool every year. "Once chillers are replaced, huge amounts of water will be saved, which in turn will help protect the environment and water resources," the spokesperson said.
