NEW DELHI:
Qualcomm
, an American wireless technology provider is looking at the
drone industry
as a next big focus area, following making a dent in the automotive sector with Snapdragon powered
artificial intelligence
(AI)-driven connected and smart cars.
'It (drone) is one of the very big areas like we have industrial IoT business units. There are examples which I am even seeing here in India. Drone has been of interest in a lot of our meetings, and has become a common theme,' John Smee, senior vice president (engineering) & global head of wireless research at Qualcomm, told ETTelecom.
Smee said that the country's drone landscape is promising, offering multiple use cases.
'This is interesting. The fact that you have this wide geographic area and a large population. Drones could be part of inspecting critical infrastructure for damage. It can be used in agriculture,' the top executive said, adding that the multinational is doing technology collaboration through Qualcomm-developed platform.
In 2021, the San Diego-based company debuted the industry's first 5G and AI drone platform, and reference design with heterogeneous computing and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.
Last year, Qualcomm together with Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson and autonomous drone solution provider Dronus demonstrated a 5G use case with mmWave spectrum-backed drone at a 5G smart factory, showcasing integration of 5G wireless technology with industrial processes. The proof-of-concept uses a Qualcomm QRB5165 processor-powered drone.
The US chipset maker is also working closely with the Indian academic institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and other universities, as a part of its broad initiatives such as the 5G University Program and the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF).
"There is a future of physical AI, and that involves a lot of drones, sensors, and the cellular network. So, those are examples even when we are talking with universities here in India. These include digital twin and RF sensing."
The executive further said that Qualcomm has a very large engineering presence in India, and is collaborating with the workforce worldwide.
'So, India for us is obviously an incredibly important location in terms of creativity of the engineering teams here. So we have a large footprint of different types of engineers on topics like 5G, some of the 6G aspects delivering the wireless part, and even on the compute part - the CPU, GPU and neural processing.'
Cristiano Amon-headed wireless technology giant has a significant research and development (R&D) presence in India's Chennai that includes a newly-unveiled design center focussing on wireless connectivity solutions and Wi-Fi technologies, augmenting the company's global R&D efforts.
The executive also said that the US multinational is excited to work with the Indian government and domestic companies in their aspiration for widespread digital connectivity.
In a bid to make India a global drone hub by 2030, the Indian government aims to boost ease of doing business by abolishing multiple approvals through a policy roadmap, that also includes the creation of drone corridors, permission-free drone operation in green zones, and the development of digital sky platform as a user-friendly online single-window system.
Separately in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi government also notified a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of drones and associated components. The program mandates a minimum value addition of 40% of net sales for drones and drone components.
India's ban on imported drones coupled with the PLI scheme-backed domestic manufacturing, has catalysed rapid innovation in autonomous drones with AI-driven capabilities.

How AI tool will bring structure, uniformity to minutes of gram sabha meetings across country

The Centre is set to unveil an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool to automatically generate minutes of meetings of gram sabhas, the primary body of the Panchayati Raj system, consisting of all registered voters of a gram panchayat. Named 'SabhaSaar', it will be rolled out in Tripura on Independence Day, August 15, and thereafter made available to other states, said a government official. Union Minister of Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lalan and his deputy Prof SP Singh Baghel will unveil 'SabhaSaar' in New Delhi Thursday, on the eve of Independence Day. A source said 'SabhaSaar' is built on Bhashini, an AI-powered language translation platform launched by the government to bridge literacy, language, and digital divides. The tool generates transcription from a video or audio, translates it into a chosen output language and prepares a summary. It enables transcription in all major Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati, in addition to English, the source said. 'SabhaSaar' is ideal for panchayats, administrative bodies, and rural development projects as it streamlines documentation and empowers stakeholders with instant access to meeting insights, as per sources. As per the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, there are 2,55,397 village panchayats, 6,742 intermediate panchayats, 665 district panchayats, and 16,189 traditional local bodies across the country. A gram sabha is supposed to meet at least four days (January 26, May 1, August 15, and October 2) in a year. To ensure that gram sabhas meet regularly and function transparently, the Panchayati Raj ministry has launched a Panchayat NIRNAY portal, a real-time monitoring system that deals with their meetings. It has provisions for scheduling, notifying citizens with the meeting agenda well in advance, enhancing public participation, recording and enabling panchayat decisions for ready reference, bringing about transparency and accountability of panchayat functionaries in panchayat decision making and its implementation. According to data available with the ministry, over 10,000 gram Sabha meetings were held through the Panchayat NIRNAY platform during the financial year 2024-25. Most of these meetings were held in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar.

Top Gainers and Losers on Aug 13: NMDC Steel, JM Financial, HBL Engineering, Bharat Dynamics, BSE among top gainers

Indian stocks ended higher in Wednesday's trading session (August 13), with benchmark indices gaining over half a percent after a tamer-than-expected US inflation report raised the possibility that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates next month. Domestic inflation continued to soften for the ninth straight month, hitting the lowest level since 2017 at 1.55%, below analysts' estimates. This also raised expectations of an interest rate cut by the central bank, lifting rate-sensitive stocks, including auto and realty counters. The Nifty 50 finished 0.54% higher at 24,619, while the S&P BSE Sensex gained 0.38% to settle at 80,539. The broader markets outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices each closing with gains of over 0.60%. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal noted in a recent report that falling oil prices, now at a two-month low of USD 66 per barrel, and optimism over a potential breakthrough in the August 15 US–Russia talks on a Ukraine ceasefire are further boosting investor confidence. Meanwhile, soft US inflation data release reassured investors, who had feared that President Donald Trump's broad tariff policies could push up prices in the US economy. The consumer price index rose 2.7% YoY in July. Traders are now pricing in a more than 90% probability of a Fed rate cut in September, with rising odds for additional cuts in October and December. Expectations of a Fed rate cut also pressured the US Dollar Index, which dropped below 98 against a basket of currencies on Wednesday. The greenback came under further pressure after White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump is considering legal action against Fed Chair Jerome Powell over his handling of renovations at the central bank's headquarters, comments that fueled concerns about the Fed's independence.
