London police arrest over 200 in pro-Palestine Action protest

Saudi Gazette4 days ago
LONDON — London police arrested at least 200 people on Saturday during the largest protest in support of Palestine Action since the group was banned last month under the UK's anti-terrorism laws.
The Metropolitan Police said more arrests were expected at the demonstration in Parliament Square, rejecting organisers' claims that only a 'fraction' of attendees had been detained.
'That claim simply isn't true,' the force said, adding that anyone openly displaying support for Palestine Action 'was either arrested or is in the process of being arrested.'
The British government banned the group in early July, days after activists broke into an air force base in southern England, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.3 million) in damage to two aircraft.
The interior ministry accused the group of other 'serious attacks' involving violence, injuries, and significant property damage.
Critics, including the United Nations, Amnesty International, and Greenpeace, have condemned the move as legal overreach and a threat to free speech.
A coalition called Defend Our Juries, which organised Saturday's protest, said 'unprecedented numbers' had risked arrest and possible imprisonment to defend civil liberties.
'We will keep going. Our numbers are already growing for the next wave of action in September,' the group said.
Demonstrators gathered near Parliament waving Palestinian flags and holding signs reading 'oppose genocide, support Palestine Action.' Some applauded those being arrested and shouted 'shame on you' at police.
'This government has gone too far. I have nothing to feel ashamed of,' said Richard Bull, 42, a wheelchair user at the protest.
Since Palestine Action was outlawed on July 5, UK police have made dozens of similar arrests. Under anti-terror laws, membership or public support for the group is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Seven people have been charged in Scotland and several others in England and Wales. — Agencies

Saudi Arabia roundly rejects Israeli expansionist plans

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Saudi Arabia strongly condemned on Wednesday the statements made by the prime minister of the Israeli occupation government regarding the so-called "Vision of Greater Israel." In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Saudi Arabia's outright rejection of the settlement and expansionist plans adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities. The Kingdom reaffirmed the historical and legal right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent and sovereign state on their own land, in accordance with the relevant international laws. Saudi Arabia also warned the international community against the Israeli occupation's continued flagrant violations, which undermine the foundations of international legitimacy, blatantly infringe on the sovereignty of states, and threaten regional and international peace and security.

Israel's Netanyahu 'Has Lost the Plot,': New Zealand's PM

New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Wednesday that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had 'lost the plot,' according to Reuters. Luxon's remarks come at a crucial time as New Zealand weighs up whether to recognize a Palestinian state. He said Netanyahu had gone way too far and the lack of humanitarian assistance, the forceful displacement of people as well as the annexation of Gaza were utterly appalling. 'I think he has lost the plot,' 'What we are seeing overnight, the attack on Gaza City, is utterly, utterly unacceptable,' he added. Earlier this week, New Zealand was considering the step of recognizing the State of Palestine amid the unthinkable humanitarian conditions in Gaza. On Monday, Australia, New Zealand's close ally, joined Canada, the UK and France in unveiling their intentions to take such a step at a UN conference in September. 'The Netanyahu Government is extinguishing the prospect of a two-state solution by rapidly expanding illegal settlements, threatening annexation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and explicitly opposing any Palestinian state,' Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. He also noted that a two-state solution is the only pathway to a secure and prosperous future that respects the aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians alike. This decisive move increases isolation on the United States that has been defending and supporting Israel's escalating military campaign since its beginning in 2023. 'Australia is further compelled by the Netanyahu Government's disregard of the international community's calls, and its failure to comply with its legal and ethical obligations in Gaza,' Albanese added. Gaza War Currently, Israel is facing regional and international pressure to put an end to its war in the Palestinian enclave and allow the delivery of more aid. At the same time, the Israeli government has been facing harsh criticism from countries, nations, and individuals who considered the war as a genocide or ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 61,499 Palestinians and wounded over 152,800, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Dozens of Gazans including children have lost their souls due to malnutrition throughout the war that caused unthinkable humanitarian conditions. 'If I Were a Palestinian, I Would Fight against Israel,': Shabak's Former Director

Ami Ayalon, a former Director of the Israeli Security Agency, also known as the Shin Bet or Shabak, said that if he were a Palestinian, he would fight against Israel, during an interview. In a video that went viral on social media, Ayalon said that if he were a Palestinian he would do everything in order to achieve his liberty. When asked about his opinion about the two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, Ayalon described them as 'terrorists and Jewish Messianic.' 'Are you calling the Minister of National security and the Minister of Finance of Israel 'terrorists'? the interviewer asked 'Of course,' Ayalon replied. @resistance4ever #stop_the_starvation #stop_the_genocide #free_palestine🇵🇸 #free_gaza ♬ original sound – You Nes Decisive Steps against Israeli Ministers Several European countries have recently criticized both ministers and even imposed travel bans on them in a response to their indictment of violence against Palestinians. In June, Slovenia declared both Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich persona non grata, according to Reuters. The Slovenian government has accused both ministers of making 'genocidal statements' and inciting violence against Palestinians. 'Today, the government adopted one of the first national measures, which is to declare two Israeli ministers… unwanted in the Republic of Slovenia,' Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon told a news conference. Slovenia's government issued a statement saying both Ben-Gvir and Smotrich 'publicly advocate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the forced evictions of Palestinians, and call for violence against the civilian Palestinian population'. Moreover, the Dutch government imposed travel bans on both ministers in July. The government has accused both Ben-Gvir and This international pressure on Israel comes at a crucial time as violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is growing with increasing number of killings and attacks by settlers and security forces. At the same time, the starvation crisis in Gaza is worsening with dozens of Gazans including children dying due to malnutrition throughout the 22 months of war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
