Bologna win Italian Cup, end 51-year major trophy wait
Dan Ndoye returned from injury to score the only goal and help Bologna to their first Coppa Italia since 1974. The club, which is owned by Canadian Joey Saputo, have only won two second-division titles in between.
It was also coach Vincenzo Italiano's first win in a final, having lost back-to-back Europa Conference League deciders while in charge of Fiorentina and finishing runners-up in the 2023 Italian Cup.
Wednesday night's result secured Bologna a spot in next season's Europa League and left Milan with the very real likelihood of missing out on European competition.
It could spell the end of Sergio Conceicao's short stint in charge of the Rossoneri, with Milan eighth in Serie A.
Both teams travelled to Rome looking to end an Italian Cup drought, as Milan last lifted the trophy 22 years ago — losing two finals in the intervening years.
The match was played at a high tempo from the start and both goalkeepers were called into making impressive saves in the opening 10 minutes.
Tension threatened to boil over towards the end of the first half and Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson was left bloodied with what looked like a broken nose after a sliding tackle on Rafael Leao, who caught him on the face with his leg as he was upended.
Bologna broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half. Riccardo Orsolini was tackled by Theo Hernandez in the area but the ball fell to Ndoye, who carved out some space before curling into the right side of the net.
The 24-year-old Switzerland international had missed Bologna's previous three matches with a thigh injury.
Milan had fought back from a goal down to beat Bologna 3-1 in the Italian league on Friday, but there was to be no such comeback in the capital.

Disjointed Chelsea held to goalless draw by Palace
Chelsea have made an underwhelming start to the English Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a match generally low on creativity. Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Brentford 3-1. Nuno expressed his "concern" for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after watching a rampant display at the City Ground. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. Igor Thiago got the Brentford on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty but there was nothing to threaten Forest's winning start. And with more signings to come and a Europa League journey to look forward to after last season's seventh-place finish, Forest fans may have more optimism than their manager after this opener. Manchester United were playing Arsenal in the late EPL match.

'Lucky' PSG stun Spurs late in UEFA Super Cup
Paris Saint-Germain have beaten Tottenham 4-3 on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup, completing a remarkable rally after scoring two late goals to take the match to a shootout. It secured a fifth trophy of 2025 for the French club. Lee Kang-in scored in the 85th minute for PSG and fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos grabbed an equaliser in the fourth minute of added time to make it 2-2 in regulation on Wednesday night in Udine, Italy. Nuno Mendes converted the clinching penalty in the shootout. "Sometimes football is unfair," PSG coach Luis Enrique said. "I have to say we were very lucky in the last 10 minutes that we could score two goals ... My players had faith until the last minute, like our supporters." The Super Cup is an annual early-season match between the most recent winners of the Champions League (PSG) and Europa League (Tottenham), and it was hardly going to script when the English club took a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Defenders popped up with Spurs' goals, with Micky van de Ven showing quick reactions to prod home the opener in the 39th minute after new PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier tipped Joao Palhinha's shot onto the crossbar. Chevalier — playing ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who announced on Tuesday he was leaving PSG — might have been unlucky with the first goal but was to blame for the second after failing to keep out a header from newly appointed Tottenham captain Cristian Romero in the 48th. PSG, who were involved in the Club World Cup until mid-July, finished strongly at Stadio Friuli, though, and hit Tottenham with late goals as Lee smashed in a low shot from the edge of the area and Ramos headed home Ousmane Dembele's right-wing cross. In the shootout, Vitinha missed PSG's first attempt but the French team then converted four in a row. Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to score for Tottenham, whose manager Thomas Frank was taking charge of his first competitive match with the Premier League team. "There are lots of things to be happy with. That needs to be the foundation going forward," the Spurs boss said. "The single result, 2-2, is good. If you look into the performance, the shift the players put in ... wow, what a mentality." Frank took over in the off-season following the firing of Australian Ange Postecoglou, who led Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years with a victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May. PSG completed the Champions League-Ligue 1-Coupe de France treble last season, also winning the Trophee des Champions in January. They lost the Club World Cup final to Chelsea. Socceroos legend Craig Foster drops Ange Postecoglou truth bomb as Tottenham begin post-Ange era
Socceroos legend Craig Foster has declared Tottenham will improve under new coach Thomas Frank as the club puts their Ange Postecoglou era in the rear-view mirror. Postecoglou was unceremoniously dumped in June despite delivering Tottenham its first trophy in 17 years, with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. Two months on from the 59-year-old's sacking, the Australian manager has yet to put pen to paper on a coaching contract as he waits for another top-flight club to give him a chance. And that may ultimately come down to how well his Tottenham reign ages as the club looks to bounce back from finishing 17th in the Premier League last season. The new Premier League season kicks off this Saturday on the new Home of Football, Stan Sport. Live & on demand with 4K. Click here for more details. Since replacing Postecoglou, Danish manager Frank has made three new signings and there is a growing sense of optimism around the club after they took Champions League winners PSG to penalties in the Euefa Super Cup earlier this week. And Foster told in an exclusive interview that he believes Tottenham will be back up fighting for a top five spot in 2025. 'They (Tottenham) will improve out of sight because they won't finish 17th again that's not possible,' Foster told 'I think they looking very good and under Thomas Frank they won't finish there again as they will improve drastically.' However, despite feeling they will improve out of sight in 2025, Foster believes every one of the other big six teams – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea – will also be better in 2025. 'Tottenham are going to be strong this season. They're not going to have an injury crisis like last years for starters. It is impossible that happens again, that was like a once in a decade phenomenon,' Foster continued. 'But the problem is all their rivals have improved as well. 'Liverpool absolutely smashed the league in Arne Slot's first season and they will be even better this year, but so will Arsenal now they have a proper No.9. Manchester City will also improve out of sight and Chelsea are really building something special, they've got a lot better.' But despite feeling Tottenham will be back fighting with the big boys, Foster says they likely would have under Postecoglou as well. 'With this Tottenham side Ange would've been pushing for the top six this year as well, probably about the same place as Frank will have them to be honest,' Foster said. 'They were going to improve anyway because they just couldn't have a similar season to last year. 'Rather than go for the (Premier League) title I think the FA Cup or Carabao Cup this year is the real target and the judgement for Frank will be whether he can get them back in the top five. 'They'll be top eight but I don't know about top five simply because the top five have all strengthened, they're all looking really good. It's going to be one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory I think.' Ange Postecoglou looking for next challenge However, Frank's tenure will likely reflect well or poorly on Postecoglou one way or another. Despite bringing Tottenham an elusive trophy all while dealing with an unprecedented injury crisis, last year's result in the Premier League was not good enough. And with Spurs almost certainly set to improve it could spell bad news for the Aussie as he hunts for his next job. On optics if Tottenham are back fighting for a top five place and especially if they win a domestic trophy under Frank, it could dissuade clubs from taking a chance on the Aussie, simply due to his Spurs tenure not ageing well. Since being sacked Postecoglou has been linked to a move to the MLS to manage Los Angeles FC and is also rumoured to be of interest to Saudi Pro League Al-Ahli, who won the AFC Champions League in May. In the meantime, Postecoglou is living it up in Europe. But it is understood that the Aussie wants another shot at either the Premier League or one of the top leagues in Europe. However, the 'big clubs' in England and almost all the 'major' leagues' managers are pretty settled, meaning he may have to bide his time for a job to present itself. In his favour is the fact Postecoglou is a winner. He has won titles at Tottenham, at Celtic in Scotland, in the J League coaching Yokohama F and even won the Asian Cup coaching Australia. And Foster says that is something that he has going for him and hopes another top club will give him a chance. 'It's tricky to see where he can go as in the Premier League all the top six clubs have all settled coaches,' Foster continued. 'Maybe teams under sort of the top six or top eight could be looking at him but the bigger question is what sort of club does he want and what lessons does he take out of Tottenham? 'I think the lesson is that he needs a particular type of team and time to build a squad to play the style of football he wants to play. 'Maybe he can get that in Europe in like Germany or Spain. I think it would be fantastic to see but at this point in time it is a bit of a wait and see.' Tottenham will begin their 2025/26 Premier League campain on Saturday night against Burnley.
