Investors on edge over Israel-Iran conflict, anti-Trump protests
By Saqib Iqbal Ahmed and Suzanne McGee NEW YORK (Reuters) -Dual risks kept investors on edge ahead of markets reopening late on Sunday, from heightened prospects of a broad Middle East war to U.S.-wide protests against U.S. President Donald Trump that threatened more domestic chaos. Israel launched a barrage of strikes across Iran on Friday and Saturday, saying it had attacked nuclear facilities and missile factories and killed a swathe of military commanders in what could be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran building an atomic weapon. Iran launched retaliatory airstrikes at Israel on Friday night, with explosions heard in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the country's two biggest cities. On Saturday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli strikes would intensify, while Tehran called off nuclear talks that Washington had held out as the only way to halt the bombing. Israel on Saturday also appeared to have hit Iran's oil and gas industry for the first time, with Iranian state media reporting a blaze at a gas field. The strikes knocked risky assets on Friday, including stocks, lifted oil prices and prompted a rush into safe havens such as gold and the dollar. Meanwhile, protests, organized by the "No Kings" coalition to oppose Trump's policies, were another potential damper on risk sentiment. Hours before those protests began on Saturday, a gunman posing as a police officer opened fire on two Minnesota politicians and their spouses, killing Democratic state assemblywoman Melissa Hortman and her husband. All three major U.S. stock indexes finished in the red on Friday, with the S&P 500 dropping 1.14%. Oil and gold prices soaring. The dollar rose. Israel and Iran are "not shadowboxing any more," said Matt Gertken, chief geopolitical analyst at BCA Research. "It's an extensive and ongoing attack." "At some point actions by one or the other side will take oil supply off the market" and that could trigger a surge in risk aversion by investors, he added. Any damage to sentiment and the willingness to take risks could curb near-term gains in the S&P 500, which appears to have stalled after rallying from its early April trade war-induced market swoon. The S&P 500 is about 20% above its April low, but has barely moved over the last four weeks. "The overall risk profile from the geopolitical situation is still too high for us to be willing to rush back into the market," said Alex Morris, chief investment officer of F/m Investments in Washington. U.S. stock futures are set to resume trading at 6 p.m. (2200 GMT) on Sunday. With risky assets sinking, investors' expectations for near-term stock market gyrations jumped. The Cboe Volatility Index rose 2.8 points to finish at 20.82 on Friday, its highest close in three weeks. The rise in the VIX, often dubbed the Wall Street 'fear gauge,' and volatility futures were "classic signs of increased risk aversion from equity market participants," said Michael Thompson, co-portfolio manager at boutique investment firm Little Harbor Advisors. Thompson said he would be watching near-term volatility futures prices for any rise toward or above the level for futures set to expire months from now. "This would indicate to us that near-term hedging is warranted," he said. The mix of domestic and global tensions is a recipe for more uncertainty and unease across most markets, BCA's Gertken said. "Major social unrest does typically push up volatility somewhat, and adding the Middle Eastern crisis to the mix means it's time to be wary." Trump Earned $57.7 Million From Crypto Venture, Disclosure Shows
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump earned $57.7 million from token sales by the crypto firm he and his sons helped launch last year, according to his required federal financial disclosure forms. Shuttered NY College Has Alumni Fighting Over Its Future Trump's Military Parade Has Washington Bracing for Tanks and Weaponry NYC Renters Brace for Price Hikes After Broker-Fee Ban Do World's Fairs Still Matter? As Part of a $45 Billion Push, ICE Prepares for a Vast Expansion of Detention Space The financial disclosure, released Friday by the Office of Government Ethics, provided details on his sprawling empire, including hundreds of millions of dollars in income from his hotels, golf resorts and cryptocurrency ventures. The $57.7 million came from sales by World Liberty Financial, the crypto firm launched last year before the election. Trump and his three sons, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Barron Trump, are among the company's founders, according to its website. That haul wasn't the largest source of the president's income from private holdings. Trump Endeavor 12 LLC, a Miami-based company that owns golf courses and a resort, produced $110 million. His Mar-a-Lago Club generated more than $50 million in resort-related revenue. Trump, who's worth an estimated $4.8 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, valued 22 assets at more than $50 million, including Mar-a-Lago, his Turnberry, Scotland, golf resort and his stakes in World Liberty Financial and Trump Media & Technology Group Corp., which owns his Truth Social platform. Officials disclose the values of their holdings in broad ranges with 'over $50 million' the highest, which means that they can't be used to calculate an individual's net worth. Trump Media, for example, is currently worth $2.2 billion. Fight Fight Fight LLC, which sells Trump's meme coin, was launched in January and wasn't included in the disclosure, which covers 2024. The company hosted a dinner that Trump attended for the 220 largest holders of the $TRUMP coin in May. The event, when announced in April, caused the coin's price to shoot up 56%. CIC Digital LLC, the entity that earns money through licensing Trump's image on nonfungible tokens, produced income of $1.1 million in 2024. It also holds a wallet holding Etherium worth at least $1 million. The 234-page disclosure also lists hundreds of trademarks Trump owns across the world, including in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Venezuela and other countries, and details his personal investments that aren't part of his business empire, as well as first lady Melania Trump's holdings. Trump listed 11 outstanding debts on the form, including two judgments against him won by author E. Jean Carroll involving allegations of sexual assault and defamation and one owed from the criminal fraud case for which he was convicted of 34 felonies. Those debts were stayed pending the outcome of appeals Trump has filed. He did not list any outstanding debt to lawyers or law firms stemming from the criminal and civil cases. Save America, his leadership political action committee, has paid most of those fees. Trump had seven outstanding real estate loans, including mortgages in amounts of more than $50 million on Trump Tower, Trump National Doral and 40 Wall Street. He also listed debt on his American Express credit card of at least $15,000. Vice President JD Vance also disclosed assets for him and his wife, Usha Vance, worth at least $6.5 million. What to know about the G7 summit Trump is attending
Group of Seven leaders, including President Trump, will gather in Canada on Sunday. The big picture: The meeting will take place on the heels of Israel's attack on Iran, while the U.S. faces deepening divides with other allies over Gaza, Ukraine and his sweeping tariffs, especially the one between the U.S. and Canada. When and where is the 2025 G7 summit? The 51st summit will take place from Sunday to Tuesday in Alberta, Canada. It will be held in the remote resort town of Kananaskis, which previously hosted a G8 summit in 2002. Who will attend the G7 summit? The G7 includes leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Germany and Britain. The European Union is typically also in attendance, along with other heads of state who aren't a part of the Group of Seven but were invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed he'll be there, with a meeting expected between him and Trump months after their last in-person meeting during Pope Francis' funeral. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will be present and said she, too, plans to meet with Trump. First-timers will include German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Canada and U.S. tensions Trump is traveling to Canada after repeatedly threatening the northern neighbor's sovereignty. Flashback: During his first term, Trump blew up the G7 meeting in 2018, which was also held in Canada, tearing up an agreement reached by the world leaders.
