Teenager Kascie Weir and midfielder Nadene Caldwell have been called into the Northern Ireland squad for the opening Nations League matches with Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.Striker Kerry Beattie, 22, was forced off in the first half of Aberdeen's defeat by Motherwell on Sunday while Cliftonville captain Burrows has also been forced to withdraw.Experienced midfielder Caldwell has been drafted into the squad while her Glentoran team-mate and Under-19 international striker Kascie Weir has been handed a first call-up.Caldwell has not featured for NI since picking up an ankle injury in the autumn while Weir, 18, has been rewarded for a strong season with Glentoran, when she scored seven goals in 2024. "It's disappointing not to have Kelsie and Kerry join the squad, however it's great to have Nadene back," said Oxtoby. "She has worked really hard to recover from her injury. She is one of our leaders, so it's really great to be able to bring her back in."Weir was set to play for NI in Under-19 European qualifiers and Oxtoby said she is a player she has been "monitoring for a while". "I got to see her in two in-house games between the seniors and the U19s and she was really impressive," said the Australian."It represents another great progression for us in terms of the youth pathway and the players we are bringing through."Former England internationals Laura Bassett and Izzy Christiansen have been added to the coaching set-up for the opening Nations League matches.Oxtoby's face Poland in Gdansk, on Friday, 21 February and welcome Bosnia-Herzegovina to Larne four days later.Romania are the fourth side in League B1 and face NI in April's double-header.

Craig Bellamy 'beyond proud' of Wales after heartbreaking Belgium defeat

Craig Bellamy 'beyond proud' of Wales after heartbreaking Belgium defeat Craig Bellamy says his side are 'aren't going anywhere' with qualification still very much in their sights Craig Bellamy, head coach of Wales (Image: Franco Arland - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images ) Craig Bellamy insisted Wales' hopes of qualifying automatically for the World Cup were far from over despite their dramatic 4-3 defeat to Belgium. Wales lost a seven-goal thriller in Brussels after fighting back from a 3-0 deficit, only for Kevin De Bruyne to deliver a gut punch two minutes from time. ‌ It was Bellamy's first defeat in 10 games in charge and Wales were also knocked off top spot in Group J by North Macedonia, 1-0 winners in Kazakhstan. ‌ Belgium are three points behind Wales with two games in hand, and will visit Cardiff in October for the return fixture. The group winners will qualify automatically for next summer's finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States, with Wales almost certainly guaranteed a play-off place through their Nations League results. Wales manager Bellamy said: 'I think I read something from the Belgium media – 'an easy way to the USA'? 'I will have a couple of weeks now of recharging but I'm beyond proud and really excited about the future.' Belgium led 3-0 inside 27 minutes through Romelu Lukaku – a controversial penalty awarded after De Bruyne's shot hit the hand of Brennan Johnson – Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku. ‌ Harry Wilson gave Wales hope from the penalty spot ahead of the break before Sorba Thomas, with his first Wales goal, and Johnson put the visitors back on level terms. Bellamy said: 'I don't like losing. I understand the game but how you lose is more important. 'Who are you as a person? Who is your team? I see that and I'm beyond proud. We're a good team. ‌ 'To come to a top-eight team and can we play the way we want to play? I think the Belgium players saw it as well. I won't tell you what we discussed.' Bellamy had promised to go on the attack in Brussels before the game and not sit back and defend against opponents ranked eighth in the world. He said: 'I understand results, I really do. But football means more to me than that. It always has done. ‌ 'I'd rather try something great and fail than do nothing and succeed. I've always been that way. 'I might not be great at anything but I'll try to be. It means more. I liked that. 'I said I wasn't coming to sit back, it's not in my nature, don't do it … it's not our culture, it's not who we are. The Capital side has announced the signing of the 16-year-old Australian, who replaces Max James in the reserve berth. Academy rider Mark Parker had been filling the void left by James, who quit the Monarchs in April citing a lack of confidence on the track. Loftus, who hails from the Gold Coast, will make the move to the northern hemisphere and ride in both the Championship and National Development League for the Scottish outfit, replacing the injured Kyran Lyden in the Academy setup. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Loftus is no stranger to some of his new team-mates, none other than compatriots Kye Thomson and Justin Sedgmen as he explained. "I know of Justin Sedgmen and Kye Thomson and I've got to know Kye more personally over the past year or so - we practise at the same track in Ipswich [Australia]," he said. "I've been watching his technique going around the track and getting some tips off him. I've watched every single video put up from Armadale, it looks amazing. I'm excited to join the club and meet all the people and race." Loftus will adorn the Monarchs race suit for the first time next Wednesday at Oxford Cheetahs' Sandy Lane followed by a trip to the Redcar Bears on Friday, June 20. He will make his home debut when the Bears visit West Lothian on Friday, June 27. The teenager has only recently moved onto the 500cc bikes after turning 16 in March following a successful career on the less powerful 250cc engines. "I'm number two in Australia on the 250s," Loftus said. "I rode those until I turned 16 in March when I jumped onto a 500 and since then I've been getting better and better on it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "I rode in SGP3 in 2024, and that went well in the semis when I got fifth. In the final I had a little bit of bad luck the way things went but my final placing was 13th." Revised 2025 Monarchs: Victor Palovaara, Kye Thomson, Michael Palm Toft, Paco Castagna, Justin Sedgmen, Jonatan Grahn, Jordy Loftus.
