CPIM to field own candidate, looks to Congress for support
CPI(M) West Bengal secretary Md. Selim on Wednesday announced the party's plan to field a candidate in the Kaliganj bypoll, to be held in June, with the support of the Congress party, citing their strong performance in the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
However, the Congress has yet to confirm whether they will support the CPIM candidate.
The Election Commission on Sunday announced June 19 as the date for the by-election to the Kaliganj Assembly seat in Nadia district of West Bengal.
'We have fought in the Panchayat and the Lok Sabha election there and did well. In the 2016 Assembly election, the Congress won the seat, but their MLA joined TMC. So, we think if we can file a candidate there and fight unitedly, we can defeat the BJP as well as the TMC there,' Selim said.
'We had a state committee meeting and Left Front meeting on Wednesday. There also we spoke on this and will approach the Congress,' he added.
'In the Lok Sabha election in 2024, our candidate for Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat, S M Sadi secured the highest votes in Kaliganj, which is more than 18% of total votes. So, we are assuming we will do well in Kaliganj bypoll and definitely we will file a candidate there,' a senior CPIM leader said.
Congress leader Soumya Aich Roy said, 'Traditionally, Kaligunj is our seat. I think everything can be resolved through talks. But, an alliance is necessary to fight against the BJP and TMC.'
Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), a Left Front ally, also has extended support to CPIM, stating they will back the party's candidate in the Kaligunj bypoll if CPIM decides to field one.
Kaligunj has traditionally been a Congress stronghold, with the party winning the seat in 2016 as part of a Left Front alliance. Notably, the Left ally RSP had previously won the seat four times during the Left regime.
However, the Congress candidate later defected to the Trinamool Congress. TMC's Nasiruddin Ahmed won from Kaliganj in 2011 but lost in 2016. He again regained the seat in 2021. After his demise the seat fell vacant.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has named Alifa Ahmed, daughter of late Nasiruddin Ahmed, as its candidate for the Kaligunj bypoll. Alifa, 38, is a B.Tech graduate and works at a prominent IT company.
In the 2011 Assembly election, Mamata Banerjee-led TMC formed a government with Congress as alliance partners. However, the alliance broke down within a year, and Congress has since maintained distance from TMC at both state and national levels.
In the 2016 Assembly election, the CPIM-led Left Front and Congress formed their first-ever official alliance. The election results saw Congress winning 44 seats, the Left Front securing 30 seats, BJP getting 3 seats, and the TMC sweeping 211 seats out of 294 seats of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
However, the alliance was short-lived and did not hold for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. In the Lok Sabha polls, Congress won 2 seats, BJP secured 18 seats, and TMC bagged 22 seats out of 42, while the Left Front failed to win any seat.
In the 2021 Assembly election, the Left Front, Congress, and Indian Secular Front (ISF) formed an alliance. However, the Left Front and Congress failed to win any seats, while ISF managed just one seat. TMC secured 213 seats, and BJP won 77 seats.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha election, despite TMC's national alliance with Congress and Left parties in the INDIA bloc, there was no alliance between them in West Bengal. Congress, however, formed an alliance with the CPIM-led Left Front in the state. The results saw Congress win one seat, while other Left parties failed to secure any. This contrasted with the 2023 Panchayat election and the 2024 Lok Sabha election, where the Left Front-Congress alliance performed well.
After the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the alliance between the Congress and the Left Front broke and they fought bypoll separately.

BJP trashes reports of distributing vermilion, slams Mamata's choice of words against PM Modi
No politician should use such language, the BJP said on Friday (May 30, 2025) as it chastised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her choice of words targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It rejected as fake news a media report that claimed the ruling BJP planned to distribute vermilion among women to mark the government's anniversary. Also Read | TMC hits back at PM Modi's claims, counter questions on Manipur, paper leaks and unemployment BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Mamata Banerjee has said what should never be spoken. No politician or elected representative should use a language... (she said) 'Is PM Modi the husband of every woman?' What kind of language is this?" But yes, Modi is a "sewak" (servant) to everyone; he is like a father to some and a brother to others, he told reporters. Attacking the Trinamool Congress supremo, Mr. Patra said, "There is no doubt, however, that if someone has worked to shelter Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas, it is Mamata Banerjee. They are fond of her." The BJP MP from Mr. Puri rejected media reports as "fake news" that the ruling BJP planned to distribute vermilion (sindoor) among women to mark the Narendra Modi government's anniversary. He accused Opposition parties, which had cited the report to slam the BJP for politicising Operation Sindoor, of spreading this propaganda to belittle India's military action against Pakistan and terror sites there. Ms. Banerjee had hit back at Mr. Modi on Thursday after the prime minister launched a sharp political attack on her government. Referring to the report, she said, "Please remember, every woman has respect, they accept sindoor only from her husband... The way you are talking... you are not the husband of everybody; why are you not giving sindoor to your Mrs first?" she said. Ms. Banerjee had said she did not want to get into such details but claimed that she was compelled to do so. "The Centre named it Operation Sindoor for political gains ahead of upcoming elections (in various states)," she alleged. "First, he (Modi) used to call himself a tea-seller, then a chowkidar, and now he has come to sell sindoor. He cannot sell sindoor like this," Ms. Banerjee said, drawing condemnation from the BJP for her choice of words. BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya also dubbed the news report as "fake" and slammed the West Bengal Chief Minister for acting like a troll to use a baseless story for politics. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, however, claimed the BJP was forced to withdraw its campaign due to the backlash. "Now they are calling the cheap plan fake news," she said on X, reacting to Mr. Malviya's comments.

Modi warns BJP leaders in Bihar over switching sides and family politics
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sent a strong message to party workers and leaders in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. He warned BJP leaders not to switch parties just before elections and then return after the polls. 'When elections approach, some people leave for other parties and return after the polls. This diminishes your significance in the party,' PM Modi told BJP leaders during a meeting, according to a report by India Today. During his visit in Bihar, Modi asked the party workers to show patience if they want to grow in the party. 'Patience is the greatest asset in a party. If you have patience, you will earn respect and recognition,' he said. The Assembly elections in Bihar, scheduled to be held in October or November 2025, will see a direct contest between the RJD-Congress-Left alliance and the ruling BJP-JD(U) alliance. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, known for changing political sides, remains important to the BJP because of his support among the Kurmi community. Kumar became Chief Minister for the ninth time in January last year after leaving the Mahagathbandhan and joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). No to family politics According to the report, PM Modi also said leaders should not expect election tickets for their family members. 'There should be no feudalism or dynasty in politics. It should not happen that if not you, then your son gets the ticket. This practice must end,' he said. 'Tell people about Operation Sindoor' With only a few months left for the polls, PM Modi gave instructions to the party workers to focus on winning every booth and tell people about India's strong response to terrorism. 'Why do party workers work hard? Shouldn't they be rewarded for their efforts?' he asked. 'Win the booth, win Bihar. Strengthen the booth, because a strong booth will ensure victory,' he added. He also told the leaders to inform people about Operation Sindoor, in which India struck terror camps and military targets inside Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. 'Tell the people how we exposed Pakistan globally on the issue of terrorism, and the strong actions taken against it. This must reach every citizen,' the Prime Minister said.
