S Jaishankar welcomes Belgium's support and solidarity in combatting terrorism
Brussels [Belgium], June 9 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar began his visit to Belgium on Monday with a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and combating terrorism.
He appreciated Belgium's support in combating terrorism and welcomed their solidarity and emphasised the strong momentum in the India-EU partnership, highlighting the potential for collaboration in clean energy, mobility, and pharmaceuticals.
The two leaders discussed deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, defense, and security.
Sharing the details in a post on X on Monday, EAM said, 'Pleased to meet DPM & FM @prevotmaxime at the start of my visit to Belgium. Welcomed Belgium's support and solidarity in combatting terrorism. Appreciated the strong momentum of our bilateral engagement and the India - EU partnership. Also held wide - ranging discussions on deepening our cooperation including in trade, investment, technology, defence & security, pharmaceuticals, clean energy and mobility.'

Jaishankar's visit to Brussels comes three months after Princess Astrid of Belgium led a 300-member economic mission to India. The recent visit by Princess Astrid, who met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar, discussed key areas such as labor migration, pharmaceuticals, defense, diamonds, space exploration, and green energy.
Interestingly, Jaishankar's visit coincides with the detention of fugitive Indian diamantaire Mehul Choksi in a Belgian jail. Choksi, accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of Rs 13,850 crore, was arrested in mid-April on India's extradition request. India has an extradition treaty with Belgium, and the government is likely to pursue Choksi's extradition during the EAM's visit.
Jaishankar is on an official visit to France, the European Union (EU), and Belgium from June 8 to 14, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs announced in a press release on Sunday.
The visit marks a significant step in further strengthening India's strategic partnerships with Europe. The EAM will first travel to Paris and Marseille, France, where he will hold bilateral discussions with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Jean Noel Barrot.
The EAM will hold a Strategic Dialogue with the EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas.
According to the MEA press release, 'India-European Union strategic partnership has strengthened over the years across diverse sectors and got a big boost with the first-ever visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India in February this year.'
Jaishankar will also meet senior leadership from the European Commission and European Parliament and interact with think tanks and media.
MEA in its statement noted that the Belgium leg would also see the EAM meet members of the Indian community during his visit.
The MEA highlighted, 'India and Belgium share warm and friendly relations along with a very robust economic partnership. Today the collaboration between the two countries spans various domains like trade and investment, green energy, technology, pharmaceutical, diamond sector and strong people-to-people ties.'
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the visit is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas. (ANI)

1 2 Vijayawada: Thousands of daily workers in Chimakurthy, a granite town in Prakasam district, are struggling to find work as small and medium-sized granite polishing units face the threat of closure due to the entry of big companies into the polishing segment. These small and medium units, numbering around 200, have been handling a substantial volume of business for the past three to four decades, procuring stocks from granite quarries and selling the polished granite to exporters. Each big firm is handling around 1 to 1.5 lakh cubic meters of stock, equivalent to the stock processed by nearly 15-20 small firms. According to sources, around 20 big companies have started operations in Prakasam district, each with the capacity to process about 1.5 lakh cubic meters of stone. This means that just 20 firms are processing a volume equivalent to that of 200 small companies. The big firms have the capacity to handle even more stock in the future due to their advanced machinery, which requires significantly less manpower. Each big unit is reportedly procuring over 150-200 containers of granite per month, equivalent to the entire stock procured by all the small units combined. The granite quarry owners are also supporting the big firms, reportedly making advance payments of Rs 2-4 crore per month. The small polishing unit owners are struggling to survive, and one owner, Raghunatha Reddy, stated that the entry of big firms with advanced machinery and their influence over quarry managements has crippled the industry. The small units cannot survive unless govt intervenes and provides them with some stock.

Mangaluru: Undeterred by the recent setback of direct flights between Mangaluru and Singapore failing to take off, Singapore-based NRIs launched an alternative strategy to boost tourism in Coastal Karnataka. Their new initiative, a series of curated tour packages for Singaporeans to Mangaluru, aims to significantly increase tourist traffic, ultimately reviving hopes for direct air connectivity. The first tour, 'Ashta Kshetra Darshan', a five-day spiritual and sightseeing journey, commences on June 13, with an inaugural batch of a small group. This marks a crucial step in showcasing the region's unique appeal. Future plans include 'Exotic Tulunadu' for adventure and beaches, and 'Rome of the East' focusing on historical churches and recreation. Calcutta High Court reserves verdict on petition against state's aid to dismissed non-teaching staff
Kolkata, June 9 (UNI): The Calcutta High Court on Monday reserved its judgment on a petition challenging the West Bengal government's recently introduced scheme that offers monetary assistance to non-teaching staff dismissed following a Supreme Court verdict. Justice Amrita Sinha reserved her decision on the petition, which opposes the state's plan to pay ex-gratia amounts of Rs 25,000 to Group C and Rs 20,000 to Group D employees. During the case hearing, Justice Singh questioned the state as to why the decision to grant the allowance was taken so hastily, without any discussion or scrutiny, following the Supreme Court's verdict. Justice Sinha also raised questions about the allowance amount. Addressing the state, she asked, "Why were the amounts set at Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000? On what basis were these figures determined?" The West Bengal government had launched the scheme to provide temporary financial relief and social security on humanitarian grounds to families affected by the dismissals. The scheme applies to Group C and D non-teaching staff who were recruited through the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and have lost their jobs because of Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announcing the ex-gratia payments had said that the aid was a one-time measure aimed at supporting those left jobless after the Supreme Court's decision earlier this month in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam. The crisis began on April 3 when a Supreme Court bench led by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld a Calcutta High Court order dismissing 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff from state-run and aided schools. The apex court concluded that the entire 2016 recruitment process had been tainted by large-scale fraud and manipulation. While the court later allowed secondary school teachers (Classes IX–XII) to return to classrooms temporarily, it made no such concession for Group C and D employees. It also ordered the state to complete a fresh recruitment process by December 31. Meanwhile, the state has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's ruling. 'Since a review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, how long will the allowance continue to be paid?,' Justice Sinha asked. She also asked the state whether Group C and Group D employees would keep receiving the allowance without doing any work. UNI XC SSP
