Suhasini Maniratnam would ‘beg' uncle Kamal Haasan to wear pants while dropping her to college: ‘I would be so ashamed'
Suhasini Maniratnam, actor and wife of filmmaker Mani Ratnam, is the niece of actor Kamal Haasan. In fact, she moved to Chennai at the age of 12 for studies, and lived with her superstar uncle. While being the 'Ulaganayagan's niece had its benefits, it would also be the source of embarrassment for Suhasini on occasion. She narrated one such incident in an appearance on a television show some years ago, and said that her uncle would often drop her to college without wearing any pants.
In a 2018 episode of Zee Tamil's show Weekend With Stars, Suhasini said that she kept her connection with Kamal a secret for quite a while. But her friends found out when a shoot was taking place outside their college, and Kamal called out to her. 'I had kept it as a secret and nobody knew the fact that Kamal is my chitthapa (uncle). The song 'Nee Kettal Naan Maatenendra Solven Kanna', where Kamal is smoking, was being shot there. Everybody were going crazy, saying, 'Kamal Haasan has come, Kamal Haasan has come, we have to go and see', and I told them 'I won't come, I won't come', but they took me anyway. After going there, I was standing at the back, and then Kamal shouts, 'Aye!' and calls me by a name. Shall I tell that name? 'Chu Chu, come here', he said. I was so embarrassed.'

But she'd be even more embarrassed when her uncle insisted on dropping her off to college in his new car. 'Then, sometimes Kamal used to drop me at college. In those times, I don't know whether you remember, there would be a special outfit for karate. There would be no pants. He used to practice karate at home, only wearing his underpants. He used to say that he has bought a new car and will drop me at college in it. I used to beg him saying, 'Please wear pants and come. Or, at least wear shorts and come.' And he would say 'Chu Chu, I won't get out of the car. I'm a big star, I can't be seen outside a ladies college.''
She said that Kamal would end up getting seen anyway, because he'd get out and open the door for her. 'That's it! The entire Queen Mary's will be watching Kamal Haasan and his legs… Ayyo! I would be so ashamed! I used to yell, 'Why are you doing that?' But that's who he is; he's galatta.' Suhasini tied the knot with filmmaker Mani Ratnam in 1988, a year after he worked with Kamal on the film Nayakan. They're set to unite for the first time since then in the upcoming Thug Life.

Thug Life Day 2 Box Office Trends: Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's movie DROPS by over 55 percent; To gross just Rs 7 crore on 1st Friday
Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life grossed a poor Rs 17 crore on the opening day in India. The film was expected to gross atleast Rs 20 crore on day 1 but the negative word of mouth spread like wildfire, as a result of which it could manage only Rs 17 crore. Now, the film has dropped by over 55 percent on day 2 and this more or less seals the film a sorry fate. Based on early trends, Thug Life has grossed Rs 7 crore on day 2, taking the two day India cume to Rs 24 crore. The long weekend total shall be under Rs 40 crore and then the weekdays should not be adding much. It was thought that a poor theatrical performance for a Kamal Haasan film like Indian 2 would not be replicated again but it has happened and by the actor-director combination that delivered a cult-classic like Nayakan. With the way Thug Life is trending, it will be no surprise if it ends with a global cume of under Rs 100 crore. Indian 2 had grossed Rs 150 crore and was termed a collosal disaster and Thug Life has shall manage to go a step further. The only difference is that Indian 2 lost money to producers while Thug Life won't because of excellent non-theatrical deals signed just after the blockbuster success of Vikram. The only loss will be that Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam won't be making as much as they should be, from the project. Thug Life got praise for its cinematography and staging but was criticised for its generic story and dragged screenplay. It is said to be a clear case of style over substance and the results are for everyone to see. The actor-director combo will look to introspect and make radical changes to the way they approach films. Kamal Haasan's next movie shall be Indian 3, which has already been shot. It is to be seen what he works on, after that. As for Mani Ratnam, it is still not clear as to what he will work on next. You can watch Thug Life at a theatre near you, now. If you have watched the movie, do share what you felt about it.

He suggested that the Kollywood movie will perform well 'its main market - Tamil Nadu' but 'will be a Disaster in Hindi.' Alongside Kamal Haasan, the star cast features Trisha Krishnan, T.R. Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: Decent start for Akshay Kumar's film, crosses ₹13 crore on opening day
Housefull 5 Box Office Collection day 1: The much-awaited film, Housefull 5, starring Akshay Kumar and his gang released in cinema on Friday. Off to a decent start, the murder mystery has crossed ₹ 13 crore at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Housefull 5 has so far minted ₹ 13.81 crore. However, these are the real-time updates from morning and afternoon. The final figures will be out after 10 pm. If the film maintains similar momentum during the evening and night shows, its total earnings could potentially double by the end of the day. Housefull 5 had an overall 20.93% Occupancy on Friday in 2D format. The 3D format saw an occupancy of 10.76% on June 06, 2025. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Ahmedabad had the highest occupancy with the highest number of screenings for the film in all formats. Following closely is Pune, Bengaluru and Surat on the list. Overall, the film has done better business than expected. Going by its advance sales booking, the film was set to premiere with ₹ ₹ 6.87 crore gross earnings (including the blocked seats). Housefull 5 is clashing with the Hindi version of Kamal Haasan's Thug Life which was released a day ahead of Housefull 6. Thug Life, however, has received an underwhelming response. On the other hand, both the films are also clashing with Maddock Films' Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, ''HOUSEFULL 5' IS AKSHAY KUMAR'S WIDEST OVERSEAS RELEASE... The much-awaited #Housefull5 has released in… 85+ countries 1300+ locations 2000+ screens.' He also reviewed the film and called it 'Dhamaal'. "#OneWordReview… #Housefull5: DHAMAAL. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ The #Housefull franchise returns with a bang – this time, it's bigger, louder, and crazier... A paisa-vasool entertainer with madness, a thrilling climax, and mass-moments galore. #Housefull5Review. First things first: In a film like #Housefull5, logic takes a backseat... The key is to surrender yourself to the craziness and enjoy the rollercoaster ride. 'Director #TarunMansukhani infuses fresh energy into the franchise, while retaining the essence that fans have loved over the years... #HF5 continues the series' tradition of over-the-top humour, madcap storytelling, and visual extravaganza. The writing is peppered with witty one-liners, quirky twists, and cleverly staged gags... In short, #HF5 strikes the right balance between madness and masala,' his post read. Taran also mentioned what did not work in the film for him. He added, 'Minus points? A few jokes feel dated and forced. Some supporting characters are underutilized. The post-interval screenplay could've been tighter.' 'The music adds to the fun quotient, with two tracks standing out: #LaalPari and #DilENadaan – both are foot-tapping and visually appealing. #AkshayKumar, the soul of the franchise, delivers a knockout performance – he is in terrific form... #RiteishDeshmukh excels yet again with his impeccable comic timing... #AbhishekBachchan springs a pleasant surprise, blending seamlessly into this chaotic universe. The leading ladies don't have much to do in terms of scope, but they add to the glam quotient and contribute to the madness. Among the massive ensemble, the standouts include: #NanaPatekar, #SanjayDutt, #JackieShroff, #FardeenKhan, #JohnyLever, and #ChunkyPanday... It's a treat to watch veteran #Ranjeet on the big screen once again. Final word? #Housefull5 is a crowd-pleaser – fun and family-friendly.'
