Muted demand: Home loan growth falls to 2.7% in FY25
According to CRIF High Mark's annual How India Lends FY25 report, the deceleration was especially visible in home loans and personal loans, which have traditionally anchored the retail credit engine.
Home loan originations rose by just 2.7% year-on-year, increasing by Rs 28,163 crore to Rs 10.7 lakh crore, a sharp fall from the 9.4% growth (Rs 97,978 crore) recorded in FY24. The slowdown was even starker in volume terms, with originations falling by 2 lakh to 34.7 lakh loans in FY25, compared to 36.6 lakh a year ago.
High property prices and macroeconomic uncertainties dampened demand, although public sector banks managed to grow their market share, partially offsetting declines seen by private lenders.
The overall consumption loan market also showed signs of fatigue. Origination value growth fell to 10.0% in FY25 from 14.7% the previous year, while volume growth slipped marginally to 9.7% from 10.0%. This pullback was largely due to increased lender caution, tighter risk controls, and rising stress in unsecured credit categories.
Personal loans were hit harder, with origination value declining by 2.9% or Rs 26,615 crore to Rs 8.8 lakh crore, down from Rs 9.1 lakh crore in FY24. While volumes rose to 14.6 crore loans, marking 8.3% growth over the previous year, this was a steep drop from the 26.9% surge in FY24. The increase in average ticket size masked slower borrower acquisition, as lenders turned risk-averse in the face of mounting delinquencies.
Two-wheeler loans, once a fast-expanding segment, saw their growth halve. Origination value rose by 10.6% or Rs 10,513 crore to Rs 1.1 lakh crore, compared to 25.1% growth (Rs 20,019 crore) in FY24. Auto loans also lost momentum, with originations increasing by just 5.2% or Rs 17,692 crore to Rs 3.6 lakh crore in FY25. This marked a sharp drop from 15.3% growth in FY24 and a 37.6% rise in FY23. Normalised vehicle demand post-pandemic and a high base effect contributed to the cooling trend.
Consumer durable loans recorded muted expansion, with originations rising 3.3% or Rs 5,144 crore to Rs 1.6 lakh crore, despite strong volume growth. Inflationary pressures and flat wage growth compressed ticket sizes, capping value growth. Credit card issuance, meanwhile, fell sharply by 26.4%, down 77.7 lakh cards to 2.2 crore from 2.9 crore lakh in FY24.

Market wrap: Bears hit top 10 firms' worth by Rs 70,325 crore; HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank among worst losers
AI image Six of India's ten most valued companies collectively lost Rs 70,325.5 crore in market valuation last week, led by HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, as domestic equities slipped amid global uncertainty and investor caution. The BSE Sensex dropped by 626.01 points or 0.74 per cent during the week, weighed down by sustained foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows and anticipation surrounding the July 9 deadline for US tariff talks. Barring Friday's modest rebound, the Indian markets largely stayed in the red, mirroring a consolidation trend. As per news agency PTI, among the top losers was HDFC Bank, as its market capitalisation fell the most, declining by Rs 19,284.8 crore to Rs 15,25,339.72 crore. CICI Bank followed with a loss of Rs 13,566.92 crore, taking its valuation down to Rs 10,29,470.57 crore. Bajaj Finance also faced a significant erosion of Rs 13,236.44 crore, with its market cap standing at Rs 5,74,977.11 crore. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) shed Rs 10,246.49 crore in value, ending the week at Rs 5,95,277.16 crore, while TCS lost Rs 8,032.15 crore, taking its valuation to Rs 12,37,729.65 crore. In contrast, four companies in the top-10 bracket witnessed gains. Reliance Industries remained India's most valued company with a Rs 15,359.36 crore jump, pushing its market cap to Rs 20,66,949.87 crore. Infosys added Rs 13,127.51 crore to reach Rs 6,81,383.80 crore, while Hindustan Unilever and State Bank of India gained Rs 7,906.37 crore and Rs 5,756.38 crore, respectively. Indian markets saw a brief relief rally on Friday, with the Sensex closing 193.42 points higher at 83,432.89 and Nifty adding 55.70 points to settle at 25,461. However, the week's overall performance remained weak, with a cumulative decline of 0.4–0.7 per cent across benchmark indices. Market sentiment was tempered by 'a wait-and-watch strategy' adopted by investors amid global cues and tariff-related uncertainty, said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services. 'Ongoing FII outflows reflect a risk-off approach, while DII inflows are offering partial support,' he said, as quoted by news agency ANI. Sectorally, FMCG, IT, pharma, PSU banks, and oil & gas led the gains, while auto and metal stocks underperformed. Analysts observed that investors were focused on specific stocks within mid- and small-cap segments, awaiting clarity on US-India trade dynamics. In terms of rankings, Reliance retained its top spot, followed by HDFC Bank, TCS, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, SBI, Infosys, LIC, Bajaj Finance and Hindustan Unilever. Punjab govt to impart business, marketing skills to Class 11 & 12 students
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday said skill education in business and marketing will be provided to all class 11 and 12 students in government schools from the next academic session under the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs scheme. The move is aimed at encouraging students to set up their own start-ups, he asserted. Addressing a gathering, Bains said under the 'Business Blasters Expo-2025', students are being encouraged to become job creators instead of job seekers, with the state government providing all kinds of assistance -- both financial and technical -- to all progressive-minded students. Referring to the expo, Bains said students selected from government schools across Punjab presented their business ideas before industrialists, start-up founders, and educationists, and all participating teams succeeded in getting financial assistance. The minister said an investment of Rs 17 lakh has been made to set up innovation labs, where students will now be able to develop their own products, even in collaboration with the IITs. Highlighting the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme, he said the state government has started a new era of student entrepreneurship, and this began as a pilot project in 30 schools in the state, where students were asked to present and pitch their business ideas. One shining example is of a girl student from a government school in Mullanpur Dakha, who created decorative flower pots that sold for 20 times their cost in Ludhiana. He said the students showcased a variety of products like electrical cycles, natural beauty products, handmade dupattas, driving simulator, artwork framing, natural ingredients masalas, safety sticks, chocolates and herbal soaps. AAP leader Manish Sisodia, citing a parliamentary report, said between 2014-15 and 2021-22, 22.05 crore youth applied for jobs, but only 7 lakh were employed. This stark gap underscores the urgency of programmes like business blasters, he said. He said that under the business blasters programme, it is now mandatory for students to present at least one business idea as a subject-based project. This ensures that every student will not only gain financial literacy and independence, but also learn the essentials of marketing and entrepreneurship, he said.
