French football federation 'suggests radical change to Ligue 1' where first place would NOT automatically win the league in a bid to shake up PSG's dominance
The French top flight has struggled to attract viewership over recent seasons in part due to the dominance of Parisian giants Paris Saint-Germain, and is currently mired in breakdown of relations with their current domestic streaming partner DAZN.
DAZN currently hold the streaming rights for the league in a deal worth £337million per year which is due to last until 2029.
But in the thick of the current season, the broadcaster sought to renegotiate terms, with ensuing discussions fraying the partnership - and a further legal dispute between the two parties anticipated.
The French domestic league was ranked the fifth most profitable league in Europe in Deloitte's 2022-23 review of football finances, bringing in roughly £2.1billion in revenue compared to the Premier League 's vastly superior £6.2bn.
Amid the crisis, the French Football Federation (FFF) have presented a new plan which will seek to revolutionise their national product - with dramatic changes to the league tipped as a concrete blueprint emerges.
FFF president Philippe Diallo revealed that three working groups have been discussing where potential changes could be made, with former coach and scout Damien Comolli leading one focused on Ligue 1.
As per L'Equipe, one of the innovations discussed involved reshaping how the Ligue 1 trophy is awarded, with the top four clubs at the end of the regular season competing in a play-off tournament.
The idea is believed to have sprung from the consistent dominance of this year's champions PSG and how to shake up the pack of trophy holders.
Reports in the French outlet suggested that the proposal has been viewed not unfavourably by some stakeholders, including some players.
But the post-season tournament could add fuel to the fire that contemporary campaigns are over-scheduled.
Other changes mapped out in Diallo's launch of the project on Monday includes a cap on the number of players in a club's squad, and the potential to look at salary caps in a bid to create a Financial Fair Play-style set of regulations in French football.

China is being urged to explain 'secret basement' under its London 'mega-embassy'
has ordered China to explain why it has redacted blueprints for its 'mega-embassy' set to be built in London, amid fears the building's basement rooms could be converted into 'spy dungeons'. As Housing Secretary, Rayner has given Beijing two weeks to either provide unredacted plans, according to the FT. According to Rayner's letter to the Chinese embassy, she highlighted that two suites of anonymous rooms and a tunnel were redacted 'for security reasons'. Other buildings on the plans were also partly greyed out, including the Cultural Exchange Building and Embassy House. It also highlights a Home Office request for a 'hard perimeter' around the embassy that may represent a 'material amendment to the application that would require further consultation'. The letter asked for further information in order for the Housing Secretary to make a 'lawful determination' on whether to allow the site to go up, adding that 'no view has been formed yet.' The new embassy, if built, would sit opposite the Tower of London in the former Royal Mint and would be China's largest in Europe. Critics fear the site will become the centre of increased espionage operations and may be used to harass Chinese dissidents. The US has already expressed 'deep concern' over the project, as it sits close to the City of London, home to some of the world's largest financial institutions. MPs in the Netherlands have also raised similar concerns. The site was sold to China by the UK government in 2018 for £255million. A full decision on whether the embassy will be allowed to be built will be made by September. It comes after diplomatic sources warned the Mail on Sunday that the new embassy will have on-site accommodation for more than 200 intelligence officers. A source said: 'There will effectively be a student-style campus for spies in the heart of the City. 'And those spy dungeons are so deep that the sensitive cables are virtually at head height.' The MoS can also reveal that the embassy plans exempt a 'cultural exchange' section from 'inspection and verification' by UK authorities. A US security source said 'cultural interests/exchange' is a 'euphemism for intelligence and security services', adding: 'It's where they often stuff their security and intelligence staff, among other diplomats. 'And if it's a "cultural" centre/space, why do they always declare it off limits in planning documents?' Ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: 'Everywhere there is a mega embassy... Chinese state-sponsored, trans-national repression of those who have fled the Chinese state or who criticise it grows dramatically. 'It's simple: a bigger embassy has more spies and more repression.' 'It was turning into a special story - we were one step away from Wembley and playing really well, particularly in those playoff games,' he added. 'It ultimately came down to small details - chances you don't convert and a header that comes off a shoulder and goes in. 'There was deep disappointment but you get over that because it's football and you have no choice but to start again. 'I spoke to lot of people over the summer. I met Coventry fans and neutrals and they all told me how well we'd done. 'That made me feel proud but my job is to understand that the hard work starts again.' Lampard added: 'We'd made all these strides and then when you miss out, you feel as manager of a club that you have a big responsibility in it. 'I still had a relatively good summer because I was with my family and had a break. 'But there were things, I was thinking all the time. I'm just thinking how can we do better and how can we try and start the season better. 'I can't wait to get back to the competitive games. I'm raring to go.'
