Students living in U.S. being repeatedly mistreated but PM Modi is silent: Congress

The Congress on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) slammed the government after a video emerged showing an Indian student being handcuffed and pinned to the floor at a U.S. airport, and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should immediately talk to President Donald Trump to appeal for intervention on the 'mistreatment' of Indians in America. Congress leaders shared the video and pictures of an Indian student handcuffed and pinned to the floor at U.S.'s Newark Airport before he was allegedly deported. The Consulate General of India in New York has said it is in touch with local authorities after the video surfaced online showing the young Indian man being handcuffed and allegedly being deported. 'We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard,' the Indian Consulate said in a post on X. U.S. crackdown on students | What are New Delhi's options | Worldview Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh alleged that the Modi Government is continuously failing to protect the honour of India and Indians. 'For the first time in history, a foreign head of state has declared ceasefire between India and Pakistan in India's absence. US President Trump is continuously claiming to have ensured a ceasefire by pressuring India,' Mr. Ramesh said in his post in Hindi on X. 'For the past one year, Indian citizens and students living in America are being repeatedly mistreated but Prime Minister Modi is maintaining silence or it should be assumed that he is unable to muster the courage to speak,' Mr. Ramesh said. He is the Prime Minister of India, it is his most important responsibility to protect the honour and respect of India and Indians, Mr. Ramesh asserted. 'We demand that Prime Minister Modi should immediately talk to President Trump and appeal for intervention on the mistreatment and atrocities being committed against Indians in America,' he said. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera tagged a post on X carrying the video, which was posted online by an Indian-American social entrepreneur Kunal Jain. The video shows the Indian man pinned to the ground by Port Authority Police and being handcuffed. 'I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night — handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,' Mr. Jain said in his post. Tagging Mr. Jain's post, Mr. Khera said, 'This is too painful, too humiliating and too distressing to watch. As a country, why should we tolerate this humiliation?' 'From the days where we showed the muscle to the U.S. during the Devyani Khobragade issue to now seeing our citizens being treated like animals, do we have no goodwill left in the world?' the Congress leader said.

Meghalaya Minister demands apology from families of Sonam, Raja Raghuvanshi for ‘tarnishing' State's image

Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) demanded an apology from the families of both Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi for allegedly 'tarnishing' the image of the State and its people, as the investigation is underway in the murder case. Speaking to ANI, Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek said, 'We are thankful to the Meghalaya police for the breakthroughs in the ongoing investigation of the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Now we are seeking an apology from Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi's families for tarnishing the image of Meghalaya and its people. We will file a case of defamation if they don't comply.' 'The accused will be brought here since the incident took place in the State. We do not have any issue if they want to hand over the case to the State police, central police or the probe agency, but the truth has already prevailed,' said the Minister. The family of Raja Raghuvanshi had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a CBI inquiry into the matter. Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife, Sonam, went missing during their honeymoon in the northeastern state. The couple was last seen on May 23. Later, on June 2, Raja's body was found in a gorge at Sohrarim near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya. Sonam Raghuvanshi was later found near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. Sonam had allegedly hired killers to get rid of her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, just days after their marriage in Indore, they said. Four of them have been arrested. Sohra tourist guide satisfied as police arrest suspects A local tourist guide who alerted police about the presence of three unidentified men accompanying newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi on the day they went missing last month said he is satisfied that his information helped crack the case. Albert Pde, the guide at Mawlakhiat, told PTI, 'I am happy that the criminals are finally behind bars. We stand vindicated. Those who tried to tarnish the image of Sohra and its people as violent have now been exposed,' said a visibly relieved Pde. Mr. Pde had said he saw the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. According to the guide, 'the four men, including Raja, were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men conversed in Hindi,' he said, admitting that he was not very conversant in the language. Mr. Pde had initially offered his services to walk them to Nongriat on May 22, but they politely refused and hired another guide identified as Bha Wansai, who dropped them at Shipara homestay.

Union Minister's claims about Malappuram teen's death baseless, says Kerala Forest Minister Saseendran

Kerala Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) termed as "half-truths" and "baseless" the reported claims by regarding the State's powers to kill wild animals and the recent death of a teen in Malappuram due to a live wire trap laid for wild boars. Mr. Saseendran said that the Union Environment Minister was merely reiterating the allegations of the Opposition with regard to the boy's death. He denied that there was any negligence on the part of the State government as was reportedly claimed by the Union Minister. Mr. Saseendran also said that while the Chief Wildlife Warden (CWC) has powers to order killing of a wild animal which causes loss of life or property in populated areas, a standard operating procedure (SOP) has to be followed before issuing any such direction. One of the requirements under the SOP is to constitute a local area committee which shall also include a representative of the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the Forest Minister said. He said that there are similar impractical requirements in the SOP which hamper the decision to be taken by the CWC. "We sent a letter requesting the Central government to give relaxations with regard to such requirements in the SOP. However, there is no response yet on that and the Union Minister was silent about it when he spoke to the media," Mr. Saseendran contended. He claimed that such "double standards" of the Centre were responsible for the sufferings of the people living in the forested hilly regions of Kerala. Mr. Yadav, while reportedly speaking to the media in Delhi a day ago, had blamed Kerala government for the death of the boy and also claimed that the Centre has issued guidelines permitting panchayats to kill wild boars if they pose a threat to human life and property. 15-year-old Ananthu, alias Jithu, a Class 10 student, died after coming into contact with a live wire from an electric fence set up illegally on a private land to trap wild boars at Vazhikadavu in Malappuram district on Saturday.
