
New archaeological perspectives on early Iron Age agro-pastoralism in Jordan

AMMAN — Archaeology has become more interdisciplinary science so scholars specialised in environmental sciences became involved in research of archaeological sites.
Earlier research paradigms that saw past societies either as victims or destroyers of environmental conditions have given way to perspectives that place humans and the environment within socio-natural systems that seek a state of equilibrium as they consistently adapt to natural and human-induced impacts, Professor Benjamin Porter from Berkeley University explained.
Porter added that archaeological research has concentrated on the participation of expansive political polities in socio-natural systems in order to examine the impacts that the development of intensified agrarian economies had on landscapes and how the environment's response to such human-induced changes created a feedback loop that promoted or limited producers' successes.
"Still other scholars have discovered that a society needs not be organised as an empire or a state to participate in socio-natural systems. Less expansive societies, such as the Pueblo societies of the American Southwest can make iterative impacts on their landscape through agriculture, irrigation and herding."
"Once the degradation of naturally available resources [e.g., water, grasslands, soils] reaches a particular limit, or less optimal climatic conditions persist, such small-scale societies must adapt to new conditions or abandon the landscape for more ideal conditions," Porter underlined.
The professor noted that the relatively small size of the Al Mujib settlements should therefore not lead one to assume a priori that early Iron Age producers were less abusive toward the landscape. Rather, such impacts should be investigated using whatever direct and indirect evidence is available.
Archaeological excavations in different settlements indicate that agriculture and pastoralism (or, agro-pastoralism) was the principal mode of production, Porter said, adding that faunal and paleobotanical evidence from Al Mudayna Al Aliya reveals that producers emphasised goats over sheep, and barley over wheat, an arrangement often chosen by producers subsisting in semi-arid conditions
"The extent to which this agro-pastoralist system was intensified during the Early Iron Age is a key question for determining the short-term and long-term impacts on the landscape."
"Geographers have observed that the intensification of agricultural economies in marginal zones can lead to the over-exploitation of naturally available resources and landscape degradation through practices such as overgrazing, aggressive planting, and irrigation," Porter underlined.
Such corrosive activities can leave signatures in the archaeological and environmental record that are available for analysis.
The fact that preindustrial producers living on the Eastern Karak Plateau in the millennia before and after the Early Iron Age developed agro-pastoralist economies suggests that economic intensification was possible here despite the semi-arid steppe conditions.
Landscape and settlement excavations have determined that the Eastern Karak Plateau witnessed five periods of agricultural intensification, albeit different in scale and organisation.
During the Early Bronze Age II-III period (c. 3100-2300 BC), nucleated agro-pastoralist settlements were larger compared to the Early Iron Age, said Porter.
The professor added that four later episodes, in the Iron Age IIC (the 7th-6th centuries BC), Nabataean-Early Roman (c. 100 BC-106 C), Late Roman through Byzantine (c. 284-551 CE) and Middle Islamic (c. 1250-1516 CE periods, occurred while the Karak Plateau was under the sway of external empires, the Assyrian, Roman, Byzantine and Mamluk Empires, respectively, the professor explained.
He added that in each instance, settlement is characterised by a combination of military forts and dispersed farmsteads and towers extending to the very edge of the desert margins. Evidence for agro-pastoralist practices reveals a diverse food economy designed to feed a larger population as well as produce for regional markets.
"These earlier and later instances of economic development indicate that intensification was possible on the Eastern Karak Plateau under the right political and economic conditions. The organic and inorganic evidence recovered from Early Iron Age settlements, however, suggest that agro-pastoralism was substantially less intensive compared to earlier and later periods of settlement," Porter explained.
The professor added that the faunal evidence sampled from multiple buildings at Al MudaynaAl 'Aliya reveal that domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and goat (Capra hircus) herds were limited in size.
This size was likely determined by households that balanced their short-term preferences for primary products such as meat with their long-term needs for secondary products such as milk and animal hair. The amount of available labour may have also determined herd size.
"The settlements likely followed a common pattern in pastoralist economies in which households cooperate by appointing a small number of individuals to manage herding duties," Porter said.

Archaeologists uncover multi-period sanctuary at Khirbat Balu'a in Karak
Remains of the Moabite citadel at Khirbet Balu'a on the Karak Plateau in the central Jordan (Photo courtesy of ACOR) AMMAN — A team of archaeologists has uncovered a multi-period sanctuary at Khirbat Balu'a, a significant archaeological site perched on the northern edge of the central Moabite Plateau, east of the Dead Sea near Karak. The site, one of the largest in the region, spans approximately 12,500 square metres and features remains from both the Iron Age and the Mamluk period (1250–1517). Massive Iron Age structures dominate the landscape, indicating the site's prominent role during that era. Friedbert Ninow from Theologische Hochschule Friedensau in Germany, who has led a research project at Khirbat Balu'a since 2008, said the latest excavations focus on the site's full occupational history rather than solely the Iron Age layers explored in earlier studies. Excavation efforts were guided by signs of illicit digging east of a monumental Iron Age structure known as the quseir. Surface finds included Nabataean-Roman pottery sherds and exposed architectural features. "Excavation revealed a stone structure that has been tentatively interpreted as an altar," Ninow said. In its earliest phase, the altar was a plaster-coated stone quadrangle measuring roughly 3.2 metres per side. It was later expanded and modified, with plaster-covered hewn stones and fill of fieldstones. Some plaster fragments bore traces of colour. In a subsequent construction phase, a stairway was added to the altar's northern side and a small podium built in front of the western wall. Ashes and bones found nearby suggest ritual use. Based on associated pottery, archaeologists date the structure to the Nabataean-Roman period. Similar altars have been found at Petra, Khirbet et-Tannur and other Nabataean sites. Near the podium, researchers uncovered a basalt sculpture of a figure standing on a pedestal. Though only the feet remain, the piece is believed to have originally stood 70–80 centimetres tall. Stylistic analysis suggests an Iron Age origin, making it a rare example of Moabite stone sculpture. A carved basalt stone embedded in the southern end of the podium may also be of Iron Age origin. 'It resembles volute capitals from Khirbat Al Mudaybi, about 40 kilometres south of Balu'a, dated to the late 8th or early 7th centuries BC,' said Ninow. He added that the altar may have been part of a larger temenos — a sacred enclosure — stretching eastward. The area included a floor of large, flat stones and was bounded by walls likely dating to the Iron Age. A test probe at the south-eastern corner of the site revealed a stone floor and pottery consistent with the Nabataean-Roman period. This suggests the Nabataeans may have repurposed older Iron Age structures to construct their sanctuary. 'If our interpretation of the altar and temenos is correct, this would represent a second Nabataean sanctuary at Balu'a, alongside the one located at Al Qasr to the west,' Ninow said.

Study highlights Neolithic seasonal habitation patterns at Wisad Pools
AMMAN — Between 2008 and 2022, the Eastern Badia Archaeological Project continued to study the area around Wisad Pools, a site in the Black Desert. The architecture at Wisad Pools stretched over ca. 1.5 km2, and it is estimated that in that expanse there were more than 400 small buildings that were inhabited seasonally for many years by pastoral groups that may also have been associated with the large 'kite' traps that permitted 'industrial hunting' of gazelle, noted Professor Emeritus Gary Rollefson from Whitman College and San Diego State University. "The dwellings were not distributed randomly over the landscape: instead, they clustered together in relatively small numbers [from 6 to 25 structures], each cluster very close to others, although it is unlikely that many of these clusters were absolutely contemporaneous, although some of the clusters might have been occupied simultaneously by kinship-related groups,' Rollefson continued. The professor added that the clusters might be considered as 'neighbourhoods' that the inhabitants returned to several years in a row but then abandoned for a time before returning again a few years later for another term of temporary residence. Although no absolute dates have been obtained for any of the clusters, they probably span the entire range of the Late Neolithic period (ca. 6,900-5,000 BCE), although there is abroad and dispersed series of very large structures that range from the Early Bronze to at least the first part of the Iron Age (3,400-700 BCE), but the later structures are not associated with long-term habitation. "The structures in the clusters share a general design pattern: Small circular shelters with basalt stone walls are the most common forms, although some buildings had external extensions of stone-walled enclosures that may have been workspaces during the stay," Rollefson explained. The professor added that the dwellings were probably roofed with organic material that deteriorated relatively soon after each habitation period. Some pollen samples from the Black Desert settlements produced pollen from palm trees, the fronds of which might have provided roofing as well as mats for flooring. Not all structures were dwellings: some clusters also include stone enclosures that were probably corrals for small herds of goats and/or sheep. The images show three groups of clusters in the north-western parts of Wisad Pools, Rollefson continued, saying that in Panel a, there are two clusters (Numbers 201-209 and Numbers 210-222a). "They clearly have different opinions on how a neighbourhood is prepared: The buildings in the smaller cluster [ca. 9 families]were constructed on ground that was covered by relatively dense basalt rubble, while the residents of the larger neighbourhood [ca. 13 families]prepared the ground by removing much of the basalt ground cover," Rollefson underlined. Notably, there are three circular enclosures in the smaller neighbourhood possibly used as corrals, while this kind of construction is absent in the larger neighbourhood. "The are also two other clusters within Panel A: BC-1 [Burial Cemetery-1] consists of small piles of basalt, probably burial cairns of people who were related to the 201-209 neighbourhood, a view based on the presence of basalt rubble of somewhat reduced density in the process of building the burial cairns.' 'Nearby BC-2 has a small number of burial cairns on a meticulously cleaned ground surface [as in Cluster 210-222a] partly set off by a stone wall; BC-2 is also in the centre of a cleared roughly circular ceremonial [?] pathway, a strong indication that the residents of both clusters were not culturally related," Rollefson highlighted. The clusters in Panel B differ from each other, particularly in terms of size and in the apparent absence of an associated Burial Cemetery in the smaller of the two, the professor said. The larger neighbourhood (ca. 25 families)shares many aspects of the larger neighbourhood in Panel A, including a small burial cairn area (BC-3), although in Panel B there are seven or eight circular enclosures absent in the large neighbourhood in Panel A, Rollefson said. The smaller neighbourhood(c. 5 families) has a structure that stands out from the rest: A cairn surrounded by a circular stone wall, with a curious U-shaped appendage extending outwards. "Panel C shows clusters at the very western edge absent [W] of Wisad Pools, and the loose grouping of more dispersed structures suggests a less integrated group of pastoral people who remained in the apparently more arid area with little indications of water resources to extend a stay beyond a few days," Rollefson explained. There are many more neighbourhoods at Wisad that reflect recurrent returns to the same place on a seasonal basis, even if interrupted for a few years. The other major prehistoric site in the Black Desert is Wadi Al Qattafi, where each of the more than 20 mesas has it own variety of multiple structure clusters. "And beyond Wisad Pools and Wadi Qattafi, even more very large settlements [mostly Late Neolithic?] in the Black Desert are now under consideration for an extended series of archaeological projects," Rollefson underscored.

'Well-preserved' Iron Age fortifications, marine shells unearthed at Tell Bleibil
AMMAN — Located in the eastern part of the southern Jordan Valley, Tell Bleibil has been researched by a team of scholars from German Archaeological Institute from Berlin. Between 2021 and 2023, scholars focused on the Iron Age fortifications and large parts of one of the structures were excavated along the northern flank of the tell, exposing an exceptionally well-preserved Iron Age IIA/B–C (middle/late 9th–late 7th/early 6th century BC) casemate wall built of mud bricks (referred to as 'Building Aˮ), of which one room (Room 3) has been excavated down to the Iron Age floor level. "Room 3 was filled with heavily burnt and subsequently collapsed debris from the upper storey, attesting to a massive conflagration towards the end of the Iron Age, most probably dating to the early 6th century BC, based on diagnostic pottery specimens found within the debris," said archaeologist Alexander Ahrens. This conflagration destroyed the entire building and settlement, and brought an end to this construction phase," said Ahrens. The archaeologist added that objects retrieved from the debris of Room 3 consist of a number of complete pottery vessels, several oil lamps, a large number of loom weights, larger and smaller grinding stones, and two door sockets, clearly coming from the storey above the actual corridor. Within this debris, also four mollusc shells were retrieved. While found within the material filling Room 3, these objects clearly were used or stored in the upper storey located above the corridor room at the time the conflagration took place. "All four specimens are bivalve shells, three single valves of Glycymeris and a fragmentary oyster," Ahrens said. Glycymeris is a cosmopolitan genus of marine bivalves, and specimens found in the Jordan Valley could thus come from any of the marine basins of the Middle East. Of the three shells found at Tell Bleibil, two are realistically too poorly preserved to be determined at species level, Ahrens elaborated. The archaeologist added that the smallest specimen has been strongly abraded and polished by wave action. "Judging from its rather sharp, steep margins, the hole near the umbo has either been artificially enlarged or is entirely artificial," Ahrens said. "The second specimen is only a valve fragment, and equally polished and rounded at its dorsal and posterior sides; breakages along the anterior and ventral sides, however, appear rather fresh. The hole near the umbo could equally result from natural abrasion or human action," Ahrens highlighted. The third valve is larger, and only its margins are slightly abraded. The ligament area and shell interior are well preserved. As in most species of Glycymeris, the combination of its shell outline and inflation is rather characteristic, Ahrens explained. The archaeologist noted that the shell is moderately inflated, slightly in equilateral, and not perfectly rounded, with an obliquely truncated posterior-dorsal margin, and a rounded posterior corner. The shell is widest at the level of this corner. This morphology is typical of the Mediterranean Glycymeris Pilosa, Ahrens underlined, noting that in the rather similar Indian Ocean species Glycymeris livida this corner is usually sharper, the posterior-ventral margin instead of the posterior-dorsal one is obliquely truncated, and the shell is generally slightly wider than high. Valves of Glycymeris are encountered at most archaeological sites in the southern Levant, particularly those from the Iron Age, but also from earlier periods. Single valves have often been used as pendants or in some other utilitarian fashion by intentionally making a hole at the umbo, or perhaps by enlarging a hole originally created by natural abrasion. "This is also the case for two of the specimens found at Tell Bleibil, which are both clearly abraded and polished by wave action," Ahrens said. "The third shell is almost entire. The differences in preservation and colour between the three specimens are due to the fact that one of the three shells – in the course of the collapse of the upper storey – was apparently deposited in heavily ash-laden debri; the other two were not, and preserve their original colour," the archaeologist noted. "It seems reasonable to assume that all three shells came from the Mediterranean coast, given that this is ascertained for the large specimen," Ahrens underscored.
